Actually the island belongs to Norway. As Greenland (with Island and Fareo Islands) was stolen from the Norwegians. We sent som guys over to occupy back it one time in the 1920s or 30'. I would say the claim still stand.

Before the English, Spaniards and Portugal? I do not like the term that people "discovered" a continent when the continent has always been a part of this world. If someone "discovered" the continent, it was the people who crossed the bridge during the Ice Age.

@lostwizard

Who says there can't be a regular tradition of exchanging bottles that is even more friendly now? Have the foreign ministers or what have you head up there, set up a table straddlig the border, do the bottle exchange, and then kick back and shoot the breeze for a while. Get that tradition going, keep Canada and Denmark intact for a century or two, and keep the tradition going. Next thing you know, people have forgotten what it was all about and successor nations controlling the area continue the tradition.... :)

As Mexican, south border, I can say: HELP!! Our governament is getting autoritarian, more corrupt and dangerous. Our country is more insecure every day and is the State's fault. Our current president openly and publicly threaten our democracy at least once (but luckily not able to end it so). Middle class is almost erradicated because social movility is just going down. Don't want to let PEMEX (Petroleos Mexicanos) die because is a (fake) Soberany thing, even if red numbers are above -100% keeping our taxes going to a bottomless pit, not including the money that simply disappear.

As a Canadian, I am glad that the Whisky War have been finally ended. Like many lads my generation, I was conscripted and spent my time in that frozen hell hole. Our medical centers were full of soldiers wounded everyday from the horrible lego minefields. We of course weren't innocent ourselves. Many a time when we couldn't storm one of the comfy Danish Hygge bunkers, we would simply dump in maple syrup and seal those Danes in a solid block of sweet maple amber. And the geese... my god, how often we would call in an air strike from those honking war crimes... Sometimes I would wake up to the sound of the honks. The horror... The horror.

Since many Years I knew about the probably most friendly teretorial conflict a.k.a. "Whisky War". Glad to hear that this conflict is finally solved, but given the numbers of victims of that "war", it was not that urgent to do so. It was a beautiful example how cilivized countries can deal with conflict.
@NarayananV28

This was far from a FRIENDLY dispute. If it really was, either of these countries should have gladly given the island to the other. The fact that they settled it by splitting a 1200 sq meters island is the depiction of how unrelenting & cheap both the countries were. On the contrary India gave away 1 island to Srilanka (Katchatheevu Islands) & 1 island to Myanmar (Coco Islands) for free, without bullying those 2 tiny countries. That's how big hearted & civilized countries behave.

to be honest, i think that canada and Denmark having a land border will actually strengthen the two nations due to being able to quickly transfer troops to one another. what i think is a funny thing though is that despite both nations knowing that neither side fully claimed the island, news headlines in the U.S said that canada won and ones in the U.K said that Denmark won.

As a Dane it is important that you understand that Canada now has a direct border with THE KINGDOM OF DENMARK, not Denmark itself. The Kingdom of Denmark consists of Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Greenland and Faroe Islands have representative elected members in the Danish parliament but Denmark does not have the same in the local elected parliaments in Greenland/Faroe Islands. Foreign policies and defence are primarily governed by Denmark and local domestic policies and administration are primarily under direct parliamentarian governance and administration locally. Having said that, I hope this could be a start for en even deeper cooperation between the Kingdom of Denmark and Canada. Just a few weeks ago, with Denmark as the driving force and backed by EU, the North Sea summit deal between Denmark, Belgium, Holland and Germany were signed agreeing on the worlds largest transition deal from fossil fuels to sustainable energy were signed. Inside same deal are the worlds largest green hydrogen production deal. 230 million (!!!) high energy using Europeans are to get their entire electricity needs and some heating and future fuel covered by this deal. This will be achieved by creating several large (worlds largest) off shore windmill park clusters in the North Sea connected by "energy islands" built in the North Sea where the energy can be transported to and different conversions also can take place, such as hydrogen production (hydrogen are made from electricity and water and when burned it only emits....water! The 4 stroke direct injection hydrogen engine HAS been invented and works just as a gasoline engine just without the CO2 emissions). It would be absolutely wonderful AND URGENTLY NEEDED if Canada maybe could make a cooperation with Denmark to replace its highly damaging fracking and tarsand projects with off shore clean energy. It would be a massive jobcreator and enhance Canada´s chance of living up to its promises of reducing CO2 emissions while laughing all the way to the bank. The fastest AND cheapest energy conversion option ARE off shore windmills and combining it with hydrogen production can level out dips in wind and high consumption times, such as winter, without spewing out CO2. I hope the enhanced diplomatic cooperation that probably have taken place lately to finalise the Hans Island deal can be used as a starting point for a deep Canadian/Kingdom of Denmark cooperation regarding such a transition project. If there are any Canadians that do not know this I can tell that Denmark consistently for last 40 years have been breaking records for windmill inventions/productivity. To my knowledge there already are some cooperation between Denmark and Canada regarding hydrogen production and storage in Canada as part of being able to fuel future Maersk ships with hydrogen. Maersk HAVE said they are in active process of planning a future without bunker oil but instead green power to X fuels, primarily hydrogen. This IS what the future will be. Canada now have a chance of becoming leaders in this on your side of the pond. As a Dane I personally would love ALL our neighbouring countries to prosper and the transition WILL happen (otherwise we all eventually die - out), and actively pursuing this WILL be a winning strategy. Please do this now and I will never use any other syrup than Canadian maple. ALL coastal nations should make their own "North Sea summit" transition project NOW. Through glaciology we KNOW that we have had a relative stable CO2 content in our atmosphere last 500.000 years+ at 220 Carbon PPM but since the industrial it has progressive exploded to now 417 PPM. We are out of time! Please, dear new neighbours....ACT!

I think Queen Margerethe and Queen Elizabeth should settle the discussion once for all over tea! technically speaking in a sorta similar vein Canada is part of the Commonwealth.
@Mike-zx1kx
@Mike-zx1kx 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShipinPro I do not understand what discussion you want settled between these two parties? Just as British Queen Elisabeth, Danish Queen Margrethe the second are not allowed to direct state political opinions and/or negotiate political issues. Culturally I believe that Elisabeth as commonwealth regal means a lot less for Canadians than our Queen do to us, but that are another talk. In Denmark the PM regularly meets and report to our Queen that also have to sign all democratically decided laws before they can become law. just as the British PM meets Elisabeth but to my knowledge Trudeau do not have to report to Elisabeth about Canada´s ongoing business. My suggestion regarding a fast deep cooperation between Denmark and Canada regarding energy transition from fossil fuels to green alternatives to a very high degree would benefit from top governmental dialogue and cooperation to pave the way for including private investors should Canada so which. It is not much more than a decade ago where windmill projects often were subsidised in some respects (although not in the massive way fossil fuels still are in some nations), recently investors are investing with money up front and subsidisation have seized, all due to the massive improvements of energy outputs mega off shore windmills have. The sectors solutions simply are good investments in a free market in itself. The German government, for reasons that forever will be hard for me to understand unless I factor in corruption inside the top of the German government at the time (I suggest any start by looking at Gerhard Schrøder that went from top of gov to a new job for POOtin´s Gasprom negotiating with his - just three days earlier - own parliamentarian colleagues to build Nordstream 2), decided to become deeply dependent of Russian gas while they COULD have made the deal with Denmark they now have and avoided being in such a tight spot now. HAD Germany done that they would have had access to plenty of hydrogen today and their car industry could have taken a worldleading position in hydrogen engine driven cars. There are not enough rare earth materials to support even 25% of the world driving battery cars. BUT hydrogen cars, that resemble the handling of a gasoline driven basically can be thrown in the oven and new cars and engines can be built from the old thus fitting perfectly in the circular sustainable green economy where growth does not equal further global planetary ecosystem disruptions. As soon as the German government (finally) realised their grave mistakes and they politically were ready to act, a deal was not far away. (Ukraine was invaded 24th of Feb 2022 and North Sea summit deal a few weeks ago! Denmark have been pushing for this for some time, but took an invasion to do the right economically and environmental deal) I seriously hope Trudeau and his government reads this and calls our PM, Mette Frederiksen and set up some fast meetings. IF Canada's needs in this transition process NOW can be incorporated in the the overall production needs (just remember the North Sea summit deal will create the worlds largest orders in the sector and new plants will have to be made or existing greatly expanded) in the sector it will be cheaper and faster for both parties. When it comes to planning to use parts of your sea for green energy production pre-approval of this in itself removes 10 years of red tape and allows projects to be investigated much much faster. Imagine a private company beginning from scratch to plan for a off shore sea spot to place a windmill park! They will often have to go into a decade long dialogue before they even can begin to make environmental investigation of seabeds etc. IF the Canadian government fx decides to pre investigate the seabed for optimal places for the parks they can then sell the right to use these areas afterwards just as if a municipality sells a bare piece of undeveloped land versus a plot that have sewage/water and electricity included. Sorry if a little long but hope it gave some insight into why I urged the Canadian government to step up and act. LEAD the way and you can become your continents first movers and make much more sound, for Canada and Canadians, business than if you wait. The planet are responding more and more to the abuse generations before us laid the ground for. WE have the knowledge AND the solutions to keep our lifestyle IF we transitions to sustainable energy production and usage now.

While I am deeply saddened to have lost all the fun of calling for outrageously overblown responses to the Dane presence on Hans Island, I'm still glad that we could work it out and have a good laugh about it with our NATO ally.

I think the standard way to fix these things historically is that if two countries can't decide between themselves, then us Brits get to come in and plant our flag. Seems to solve most issues right?

I love my little country in the North, Denmark. And, I wouldn't expect anything less from them than to find a way to come to an agreement with its neighbor, than over a bottle of Danish Akvavit (Schnaps). Mmm, yummy! I can just hear them, Denmark: "Oh, you can have it, just take it. You're so nice. Canada: Nah, you're too nice too, you keep it. We like you so much!" Hey Canada! Skål! It's a really silly country, but you can't help loving it!

1:06 . . . wrong . . . France has a boarder with Canada. There's a small island that is connected . . . if you're going to try and quibble over it not being perfectly land connected, several of your mentions up to that point in the video have rivers dividing them.
@DeathsHood
@DeathsHood 2 жыл бұрын
There's nothing to quibble over. One's a literal island some 20km off the coast that shares no land connection at all, and the island being talked about in the video is split nearly in half, so there's a *literal* land border there.
@tenantnumber1sres543
@tenantnumber1sres543 2 жыл бұрын
@@DeathsHood seriously? . . . you have no idea where that land is obviously and if you knew anything about reality, you'd know you can't see 20km over a horizon.
@DeathsHood

@@tenantnumber1sres543 I know exactly where "that land" is, you desperate twit. It's 19km off the coast of Newfoundland. Well into the *_ocean._* Making it a *_maritime_* border, *_NOT_* a land border. "Seeing over the horizon" is utterly meaningless, because we _know where the island is._ To be specific, it's *_3_* islands approximately 19km off the coast of Newfoundland. Are you really this stupid? Or do you like pretending because it makes you feel special?
