Why South Korea wants a tiny piece of Russia

Russia is a country which has multiple border disputes with its neighbours, and soon there might be another one with a country which doesn’t technically have a border with Russia: South Korea. Subject of this developing territorial dispute is the former island known as Noktundo or No’ktundo (Ноктундо in Russian and 녹둔도 in Korean).
Since mediaeval times, Noktundo was a remote outpost of the Korean state (Chosen or Joeson). However, centuries later, when the Tuman river (or Tumen river) began changing its course, the island became permanently attached to the mainland which would become Russian territory in 1860 after the treaty of Aigun. Since then, the territory has been under Russian control - but recently voices calling for the return of Noktundo to South Korea are getting louder in the South Korean media and public.
In this video we’ll take a look at what this conflict is really all about, how it developed and what it means for the future of East Asian security politics - all through hopefully entertaining countryballs or polandballs.

Koreans, this island will become yours, we feel you, In your case this islands means much more for you, so it would be fair to give it to you. The second point of this deal is beneficial for Russia, because sharing a border with S.Korea would be a fantastic idea for Russia, it's fascinating, that we could share border with Norway, Finland and South Korea at the same time. When mafia government will collapse, i don't think NK will collapse too, considering that they are singlehandedly supported by the pooh, so unfortunately, we will not have the longer border with you, but still, for normal democratic Russia there would be really no good reason to keep it to ourselves. So i hope in one day we will be able to cross our border with one step! ❤💙

Which is interesting, given that Noktundo being rightfully part of Korea is pretty much indisputable, and it's much more historically important than Dokdo. Though the latter is a lot more valuable in the modern era, and South Korea is already in actual possession of it rather than needing to ask another nation to give it back.

In 2005 there was a demarcation of Russian-Chinese border, when control over a couple of islands on the Amur river with total area of 337 square kilometers was passed from Russia to China. The reason that was stated - to settle all border disagreements and to improve relations with China. So I wouldn't say that passing control over such a small "island" is out of the question, but not in the current situation certainly. Edit: since I keep getting replies about it - the phrase "not in current political situation" also includes the existence of two Koreas.

the problem lies within the 2020 "changes" to Russian constitution, which make it unlawful to give away any territory. unless these changes are revoked (and there's a good case for that in case any reformist/anti-Putin faction takes power, because 2020 "vote" (it should've been a referendum btw) is pretty much a sham, not even counting voter fraud) the current Russian government can just raise their hands and say "no can do, look at our constitution"

Also as long as South Korea remains a staunch US ally, that will never happen since it will mean US troops potentially being placed there. What would S.Korea do with that land? Yes it was Korean territory but there's no way to claim it today and it is not considered as "disputed" territory. Same with Taiwan officially claiming Baekdu mountain. They claim it was given to them by japanese during their occupation of Korea but they don't dispute it as there's no way for them to occupy it. Korea would rather dispute Dae-Ma-Do.

Very interesting topic, I love how your channel always presents this kind of things in an interesting manner. As for the issue itself: never going to happen as the can of worms will be greater than that of Russia or South Korea. By the same logic Germany can ask both Poland and Russia to return all the land to Kaliningrad with the city itself to them as it was historically great German land and city. Furthermore, Russia (even under sanctions) is still a powerful military and political force. Add to that the North Korean agreement that the land is now Russian and you get quite the impossible situation. But the bottom line: as long as everyone has access to the land in question there is no issue as everyone can visit it at any time.

The territory is extremely insignificant if South Korea abandons the alliance with the United States And we will start negotiations with China and Russia, and make a U-turn in its favor. This will instantly lead to a breakthrough in relations, and then this territory can even be transferred free of charge or even connect both Koreas. This will affect the standard of living, and the economy is very strong, yes. But choosing in favor, giving up freedom, for the sake of the strength of the nation, this is what great nations do. 75 million United Korea, I think it will be a very serious country. And then it will be possible to claim not only revenge for the massacre of Koreans from Japan, or put up with the rejection of the Japanese islands. And already claim the annexation of Japan.

If this is really a contentious issue for South Korea, I have to wonder why the very first course of action isn't negotiating "Russia, Can we buy this exact plot of land from you for X money?" If it's not particularly valuable to Russia, then I'm sure there IS a price that would be acceptable. That price might be exceedingly expensive, but if SK wanted the land because its important to them (and not just because they "might" get it for free, which objectively speaking IS probably the actual reason, not to be a Korea-hater) then that transaction should theoretically still be favorable to both sides.

If you look a little back in history you might find out that Taejo of Joseon was unable take over all of Goryo (Koryo) and it's people were (are?) not even considered to be Koreans by the "proper, non-barbaric" Koreans despite having practically the same language and culture. So you can theoretically fit a third Korea north of North Korea. History can be a little mind-blowing sometimes.

That's why China is doing that historical revisionist project to erase ancient Korean history in Manchuria including Koguryeo. Because they can only think in the way they themselves think: that we Koreans will somehow try to claim that land, but Koreans are not cr4zy nor do we have interest or power to actually take over Chinese Northeast. CCP has more political reasons to do that historical revisionism mainly: in case North Korea collapses and possibly get absorbed by South Korea. They need every justification to control the North due to US army presence in the South, which will want to take part in whatever happens in the North. Its a hairy situation that not many outside Korea and Chinese top knows.

As a Russian living in the region, it seems to me that you are exaggerating on this point. Despite the sanctions, the Russians and South Koreans get along just fine. First of all, Japan is not disputing all of the Kurils, but only the southern part. And when I was on Iturup, I didn't notice any desire among the residents to become part of Japan. So I think that all the disputes in our region are greatly exaggerated. It seems to me that such a notion as historical territory cannot be the basis for redrawing maps, as it would bring blood and suffering to people living now, not to those who lived once. Besides, Japan has no historical justification for these territories, since Japan was an empire like Russia, and Russia simply managed to be the first to join the Kurils.

Something that was not mentioned but I think is even more important if the cession happened would be the effect on North Korea. For defectors trying to escape, they either have to cross the DMZ (which is full of mines, wild animals, and North Korean defenses), go though China and cross though the Gobi Desert into Mongolia, or travel south through China all the way to southeast Asia without speaking Chinese. However, if they are caught by China or Russia they are deported and imprisoned. If South Korea controlled Noktundo, it would provide an easy place for defectors to escape to, and therefore would be a MASSIVE headache for Pyongyang to contain. Though very unlikely, a relatively safe and easy freedom from such an oppressive regime could suddenly send millions of defectors (as well as the troops inevitably sent to stop them) streaming together over the border, and lead to the potential collapse of North Korea.

I don't think that all of those parties should go to into conflict because of some "symbolic" values, it's a symbol after all, it's only valued when people agree on it, so why not creating your own symbol. You had me in the first half and lost me with the last sentence. The problem with both Korea's is that because it's a civil war, both nations have legal claims to the other side and every nation who fought for their Korea knows this. Paektu Mountain is a classic example of this, China had no choice but to have talks with BOTH Korea's on where the border runs on the mountain and fortunate for China, they got both Korean's to agree on the same set of lines which is rare. I agree to a degree that South Korea has to worry about North Korea first however it in order to have legal claim, they cannot do exactly what Pakistan and India has when Jammu and Kashmir was invaded by Pakistan to which Jammu and Kashmir went to India for military help and it to this day has been leading to who actually owns what because of the situation it was in. USSR technically created this problem by just assuming North Korea's view was good enough, I give credit to China for being a bit wiser. Because if North Korea ever gets annexed by the South, anyone with a brain will know that North Korean treaties are now pointless and would be stupid to assume the South would enforce them.

Before Korea turns into a US neocon pawn against Russia, even after reunification, it has other more over-riding territorial claims on Tsushima against Japan and southern Manchuria against China. Yeah Germany has renounce all claims to that exclave. One of the big reasons why they don't want it back is because while the area does have important cultural history to it, the place itself is no longer German.

you are greatly mistaken if you think that for Russia, East Prussia does not play a role. This is a huge cultural and historical layer. And one of the most shameful victories of the Russian Empire under Emperor Paul III Who, after the seizure of territories and a 7-year war, gave the entire completely occupied territory back to the local king, whom he admired

@@ApersonIguess-rb6fu True. The area is more trouble than it's worth. But strategically having a Russian enclave so close by is not a good idea. Maybe even Poland could buy it.

Russia had offered it back to current Lithuania which was but they didn’t want the expense of the country. This was back in 60s when kalingrad was more burdensome than strategic out post. Poland and lithounia were part of Russian satellite states. When a Cold War suddenly became warmer kalingrad took on new strategic importance. It’s on allied Atlantic command planning list. And is most fortified piece of land in world. It’s a no fly zone with its three tiered anti air system and the Particulary s550 discovers stealth air craft. They have nuclear weapeansxpointed st every European capital should something hit kalingrad why nonone in a rush to attack Russia. From Lisbon Madrid to London Paris and Berlin all are reachable in two minutes. No one in a rush to endcupnlookingblikecukrsine. They been through this previously. You regroup and level every thing in thier path with artillery literally. You don’t bother them they don’t bother you. And each spheres of influence.

I am an adult who received a regular school education in Korea and did not major in history. I remember reading in the late 1990s, in a Korean history magazine, at the end of an article about the past about Nokdundo Island, that it was now occupied by Russia. However, neither before nor after that, in any history textbook or educational book, I have never seen anything beyond the fact that Yi Sun-sin served in Nokdundo Island, that is, that Russia currently occupies it or that it should be returned in the future. Rather, it is only more widely known in Korea that some nationalistic civilians claim that part of Manchuria (Gando) should be acquired after North and South Korea are reunified or after China is divided into several states. Of course, the future is unknown.

Occupied? What are you talking about? This is Russian territory. You left it to China. We took it from them. You have no relation to this land.

Most likely not, North Korea, China and Russia will be asking "what you gonna do with this land?" And come with the conclusion of it being a military base. That's if they even what to think about seceding land to South Korea.
