Ok, panamanian here. The video is overly simplified, but the gist of it is mostly right. Colombia actually did agreed to the construction of the Canal and signed the Herran-Hay treaty, but it was rejected by the colombian Senate because it gave the US sovereignty over the land for 99 years. The Hay-Bunau Varilla treaty (that no panamanian signed) later gave the land away literally for eternity. However, several national movements (mostly lead by students) pushed for Panamá to reclaim sovereignty of our country. In 1964 a group of students marched into Balboa High School in the Panama Canal Zone to enforce an agreement that the Panama flag should wave in all schools. They were beaten by US citizens and the Panama flag they were carrying was torn to pieces. This led to a national revolt. The US army quelled the revolt by deploying tanks and killing dissenters. This prompted the president to formally break diplomatic relations with the US (a first for any latin american nation with US occupation). This generated a huge momentum, and finally in 1977 the Torrijos-Carter treaty was signed and the transition back to Panama began. The whole process ended in December 1999, and since then the Canal has been operated solely by panamanians.

It's a pretty complex issue. During the 70's the US was focused on fighting communist countries in Central America. One crucial figure during that time was Panama's chief of Intelligence, Manuel Antonio Noriega, who was trusted to deal with the Americans on some crucial matters. He received training by the CIA and would later rise to power after General Omar Torrijos died in a mysterious plane crash. Having a close relatonship with the US, he helped funnel money, drugs, and weapons into countries like Nicaragua to sponsor guerrilla groups that opposed the Sandinistas (communists). However, like many other CIA trained figures (Hussein, Bin Laden, etc...), the US would turn on him and eventually take him down, in Noriega's case during the US Invasion of Panama in '89. After the Invasion, Panama's military was dismantled. In accordance to the Canal treaties, if the waterway is ever considered to be in jeopardy, the US has a right to intervene and step into the country.

The Canal is an amazing thing. But it definitely wasn't free. Nor was US intervention in the country. My uncle, a civilian engineer, was shot in the head by a US soldier while he was in the car with his wife. More than 80% of the thousands of victims during the Invasion were innocent civilians. The United States has done a lot of good, but also a lot of terrible things. Knowing your whole history, instead of buying into cheap discourse, will make you stronger as a nation and hopefully prevent you from repeating past mistakes.

it is really simplified as it looks at the period after 1903. Columbia won't ratify a treaty that would allow the US to pick up (almost 10 years later) where the French left off after 2 failed attempts. From 1881-1894 the French could not get it done. The Americans wanted that glory.. they often take credit for things the French lay the ground work for (like their whole country) The Americans offered to buy up the agreement from the French and waited for Columbia to ok the deal When the Columbian's didn't play ball the Americans did help a revolution. While they glaze over a lot of the background (thousand day war for example) they did get the points of 1903 on war not too bad. also WarParty it is hardly Leftist Propaganda.

I don't think you can tell the story of the Panama canal without at least mentioning the 1000 days war. The reason Colombia lost Panama was not only because the USA send a big army but because just recently we had bleed to freaking death in a civil war that Panama didn't want to be part of. At that point in history Panama even had engraved in the Constitution of 1886 about how the Itsmo would be ruled by special laws. It wasn't mainly that USA wanted a canal and basically divided a peacefull country, they took advantage of the inestability inside Colombia to do it.

We did conquer native americans but so did all other nations who could in that time period and before. I don't like when people single out the US because they weren't any worse than the rest of the world. In fact after the conclusion of manifest destiny, there was a strong turn against imperialism, which is why we didn't try colonizing in Africa. The reason panama was an exception to this was because we basically gave a country it's independence and then turned useless rain forest into a canal which depended on the local economy(plus for Panamanians). So they got a free canal they just had to wait a little while to get there hands on it and it was great for the world as a whole.

Due to it being a federal and constitutional republic without a monarchy nor any form of imperial leader, the closest thing the U.S. has to a "emperor" is a president but emperors are normally born into an imperial family or have most power go directly to a single person. There are few exceptions where emperors/empresses don't fit into any one of those categories. The U.S. is much more akin to that of an empire as its closest historical counterpart; the late Roman Republic, specifically the Caesarian-Era Rome before the Civil War. Btw I'm not denying nor disagreeing with you on American Imperialism, I'm just being technical.

This hole video is bull sh*t. The Panamanians could not have built the canal on their own. They had brighter the funds nor the engineering expertise to do so. Only America could have built that canal, I say that because the French tried and failed before us. We offered Panama independence in exchange for the Canal Zone and right to build the canal that would change the whole world for the better. Nothing about that is wrong and it's not "theft." Also, how come when any other country outside of Western Civilization wins land in war it's "conquest" but when we do it it's "theft." For example when the Zulu's conquered all their neighbors and founded their empire on a pile of their neighbors corpses. But when the British conquer other people's land it's "theft." Makes no sense. Another example is the Sioux Indians. They took the Black Hills from the Pawnee and other tribes through war fare, and massacre yet when America took the Black Hills it's considered "theft" of land by Leftists. Makes no sense at all

Just because the former oppressed a nation doesn't mean that you can justify the oppression by the latter. For a time, we were almost imperialist. Getting involved in Vietnam and Cambodia and Indonesia was not worth it, especially Cambodia and Indonesia. Minus the cultural genocide of the (remaining) native Americans, and the Atlantic slave trade that we continued on with even though many other nations already stopped, we are not as bad as other nations. I would say that we are definitly better than the many fascist dictatorships in history like Nazi Germany, Soviet Union, China, North Korea, Democratic Kampuchea (Communist Cambodia), Indonesia, imperialist Japan, etc etc. As Americans its very normal to remember from our faults, rather than pointing out the faults of others in order to justify our actions.

Colombian here but Panama was independent before Colombia's annexation. In fact, Panama decided to join Colombia voluntarily and after some years of decadence some movements wanted a voluntary independence (which technically they could've done if it weren't because there were so many whealty Panamenian elitists with high public positions in Bogotá) and those Rich Panamenians were happy of being part of Colombia.

Also, after counting for inflation, the cost of the land for the canal was $294,380,000 in today’s money. Money that was sent to Panama. And that’s just for the land. Panama also didn’t have to pay for the physical construction of the canal, while the US did. Panama also got to use the canal for the same lower fee as US ships. Panama has also tried to be independent from Columbia since 1831, and had been in an attempted revolution from 1899-1902, when the US was negotiating with Colombia still. Panama was given the Canal in 1999. Explain to me how this counts as stealing.

I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. I've heard plenty of people talking about the corruption of the Robber Barons from US history and how they hoarded wealth from the people, but I have seen very few people talk about the fact that Theodore Roosevelt (a republican president) was one of the most important people involved in breaking up those absurdly large and corrupt businesses. The canal was going to be built one way or another through Panama or through Nicaragua by America or by France (but America would have probably taken it over dew to the Monroe Doctrine). And Roosevelt didn't *just* build the canal so he could show off (as if he really needed to the was already very popular in the eyes of the american public) the main reason it was built was to CONNECT THE ATLANTIC AND PACIFIC. My problem with this guy is that he condenses topics into 5 minute clips and people blindly take his word without a second thought or looking deeper into the topic then turn around and speak as though they have authority on it.

I'm not going to pretend that the United States has never done anything wrong, but from what I see here, no wrong doing has legitimately taken place. The U.S. helped an ambitious businessman take over the country of Panama in exchange for some land to build the Panama Canal, which, might I add, was better for many because it meant merchants no longer had to go through the tip of Argentina to get to the Atlantic ocean. The man was chosen to be the representative to Washington. No one forced him into the position. Now, dont get me wrong, we're not saints, but the way you're telling this story is an attempt to smear the reputation of this country even further. I'm not going to tell you to not do episodes on American history that make us look bad, I'm just saying that you, as a major media outlet have a lot of power. You have a responsibility to tell history in a non-partisan way, otherwise, it's just part of another propaganda ploy to ruin the image of this country even further.
