A family ended up homeless, having their house burned down by a blazing fire right before Christmas, but the culprit seemed as innocent as can be: Their Christmas tree. Did you know that Christmas trees are one of the leading causes of fire around this time of year? So why are they so flammable, and how can we prevent them from catching fire? Is there a difference between real and artificial fires caused by Christmas trees? Let’s get into it!

I’m not sure if they have this anymore, but when I was a kid we had a fire alarm type ornament we’d hang in the tree every year. It was my favorite because it looked like a disco ball. It was probably pretty bare bones, but it had a heat triggered fire alarm function built into it. My mom tested it every season as she was putting up the tree, and it’d hang there all season regardless if we used a real or artificial tree.

My mom used to work in an ER back in the 90's. One of the dumber stories she told me was a father and son who were admitted with 3rd degree burns all over their bodies. It turns out their idea of disposing of their old Christmas tree was to shove it into their fireplace thinking the fire would only burn in the fireplace.

You can't convict or jail a five year old or send them to juvie. He is below the age of reason (and if you don't know what that is, look it up). Even if they know fire is hot and can burn things, if they find a lighter, it'll be "what is this weird sparky thing it can do?" and "awesome! I made it do something!" Yes, this will haunt him for a good portion of his life, even if later on, he doesn't remember very much but fire, smoke, and sirens.

My grandmother's told me about when my grandparents were renting a room and their landlord had a real tree with candles. It was after Christmas so the tree was dry. I don't remember exactly who but the landlord had a grandchild or niece/nephew, some child relative, who was visiting and to entertain them she lit a sparkler using one of the lit candles on the tree. Well, fortunately my grandparents had taken the day off work because they heard a "WHOOSH", my grandfather ran into the next room to see the tree ablaze and the curtains catching fire. He grabbed the tree and threw it out the window into the snow. So, uh, remember to not light firework sticks right next to what amounts to house kindling. Not the only time their landlord did something rather concerning either, she also made soup from a frozen chicken without first removing the guts and de-iced her electric freezer with an ice pick making holes through to the insulation.

For those with real trees, one way to make sure it doesn't dry out easily is to spritz the tree with a water bottle for a few days before decorating it. My house has done it for years and we have found we can put litres of water onto the tree over a few days and it doesn't drip off as the needles absorb it. That way it's not just the base of the tree has moisture. Also, it makes the trees usually greener and more fragrant!

I was too young to fully understand but my mom said that one of "our best Christmases" was because my Aunt and 4 cousins house burned down... The local community worked super hard and swiftly to help them replace everything plus some to the point my Aunt was giving the extra to my mom for me... Again I was too young to understand or question how my cousins felt at that time but they recall it as a miracle going from nothing to having so many people replace everything they lost plus some. When I was a kid I thought my mom was paranoid. Now I know she is paranoid but for good reason. We never leave Christmas lights on when we leave the house or when we go to bed at night. We turn the furnace down as low as we possibly can. We have an artificial tree now but when we have a real tree we make sure it is well watered. We don't store our tree near the fireplace or near the heat runs because it can dry it out faster. So here's to the paranoids. There was a woman who lived in a town adjacent to ours who had her tree in February in her house, and it was a real tree, and it caught fire. Her house went up so fast that there was no saving her. For a long time, there was just a garage to mark where a woman lost her life. And we think about trees 150 years ago, where most houses were made of solid wood, they had no kind of fire retardants or smoke detectors or even a decent fire department, and they put lit candles on the tree. Of course, back then they didn't get their tree the day after Thanksgiving. But you've got to be laser focused and diligent and maintaining your tree.

One of my students lost two relatives (dad and uncle?), their home, and everyone had related health problems, thanks to a fire. The tree wasn't the central problem-- it was crowding! The whole family was gathered in their small home, kids sleeping on the floor, cords running everywhere, with furniture and decorations jammed in together. Wiring overheated, the smoke and fumes made it difficult to maneuver in the dark, and two people lost their lives. It was a stark reminder to consider yet another safety hazard in our homes, as we worked to comfort the survivors.

There are benefits to being paranoid about a fire happening. When I was a teen I always made sure the lights were unplugged before going to bed, I couldn't sleep if I kept them plugged in because I was concerned about a fire. Our best Christmas tree was a spruce we cut down in the 1960's. I was a teenager and 3 of my uncles had me go with them on that trip. We got the 4 trees for nothing. These were marked for thinning by the Forest Service. This was mid-November with a little snow on the ground. I got to ride in the bed of the pickup to and from the site. I put the one I cut down in a bucket full of water in the shed. When it came time to put it in the house, I trimmed it down to fit the room it went into. The part that was in the bucket was a half frozen popsicle anyway. It barely shed a needle to after we took it down. Our tree lights were turned off anyway when we went to bed. We had some real bad ones from the tree lot$$.

I'm paranoid about fire. I'd rather just not have a tree. Especially with the kitten. But my family insists. So I just have to keep an eye on her and make sure it's not plugged in when no one is going to be home or awake.

They now make fire-extinguishing orbs that are meant to be thrown into a fire....it'd be great if they made ones that could be some festive color to stick inside your tree, so if it catches fire, the orb will burst and hopefully help put it out.

The one saving grace here is the switch from incandescent lights to more LED strands which out put far less heat
@chaos.corner

To be fair, incandescents don't put out much heat either. I wonder if it's something else about the setup that may also apply to LEDs. Though it could be people overloading the cords and LEDs should help with that.

Another reason why natural trees are easier to catch fire was not mentioned: many of them have natural resins imbibed in their timber that are highly flammable and help the fire spread faster. This is particularly true for conifers (pines and related species), which are usually the preferred trees for Christmas decoration in temperate countries.

In Germany, we traditionally buy/cut trees max. 1 week before Christmas. The tree stays outside until Christmas' Eve. The tree is decorated in the morning of Chrismas Eve and stays in the house until January 6th (Epiphany) for the twelve days of Christmas. We also keep a bucket of water beside the tree (just in case) esp. when we light real candles (the are lit only when we are in the vicinity of the tree). The time from Thanksgiving to Christmas (or even to Epiphany) is imho too long for a real tree to survive.

I don't know how the German tradition of putting lit candles on trees (originally attached only by melted wax) lasted so long. I guess humans were just more responsible a long time ago, now we just like to set it and forget it.

The tradition also started with trees that were kept outdoors, this tradition (and yes, there were fires with these trees) only became a problem once we started bringing the trees into the house.

@Luka Tim I agree, but one way that I like to spice it up is to deliberately leave the tree to dry out, then drag it outside for New Year's Eve, before loading it up with fireworks (this part is done carefully to ensure nothing else catches fire). It's an intense three to four minutes to behold, when that tree goes up in flames.

Admittedly until the 19th century people Keept something like hip hight trees(branches or treetops) tied up to the ceiling with a bow (outside of kids range, movable, drying the needles last) and had much shorter ways to toss it outside. It was Victoria and Albert in the UK who wanted to depict German Christmas traditions with absurdly high ceilings and put their tree on a side table for a portrait... from when on ballooned in size nearly instantly

In a city in the southern end of my state, only one person out of a family of 6 made it out of their home during a fire that occurred shortly before Christmas. The fire originated in the couch, and smoldered for a long time before the person sleeping on it awoke and escaped. Everyone else, 4 children and their mother, all perished in the fire. Apparently when the survivor was interviewed he told investigators that when he awoke and tried to alert the others, the whole home was already completely full of smoke and the smoke alarms weren't sounding. Later, the smoke detectors were tested and found to be fully functional, yet never went off. Subsequently, it was found that they were ionization detectors which don't alert to smoldering fires. This led to the state mandating that photoelectric detectors be used due to the higher sensitivity to smoke.
