You have one of my favorite channels on KZbin. I have tons of subscriptions, but there are few that I legit get excited for when I see post. You just have a way of narrating that keeps me invested. The amount of respect shown to everyone is also very refreshing to see these days. Plus, I love the doggies 😅

What a great video on this topic - I really appreciate that you read into the origins of piracy in the region (and recommended a book for us!), and also talked about how the Chandlers have done so much since to highlight it, despite all that they went through. In an era of deeply polarising media, it's so important that we see content like this.

What an incredible experience. My former husband and i spent 7 years cruising on our sailboat, and i am grateful that it took place decades ago when it was comparatively safe - although even then not without risk. Bravo to this brave couple for not giving up their chosen lifestyle. Its a great story, and your canine cohosts really add a terrific effect.

@@adventuresgonewrong I am English and have followed Sealand from the start, it is indeed interesting in an 'off the wall' way. I also remember this story well, it was on the news a lot here at the time. Sealand is like an updated version of 'Passport to Pimlico' (film) which if you haven't heard of it, is a fabulous and hilarious Ealing Comedy from 1949. Well done for another great episode.

As a South African I am always astounded that anyone will go near the coast of Somalia. ETA In Cape Town we would have to assume that if you met people fishing in the sea at night they were perlemoen poachers and would happily shoot you if you got in the way.

In 1980, when I was 11 my family and I were crossing from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini in the Bahamas to start our sailing adventure. It was my father’s plan to sail around the world. It was a night crossing and out of nowhere a huge light shined on our sailboat. It was pirates. Dad sent us all below and he got on the vhs to call a friend who knew someone in the coast guard. I don’t know how they got to us so quickly but the coast guard helicopter arrived in what seemed like minutes. Those pirates disappeared so fast…I don’t remember what the outcome was, if the coast guard found their vessel but it was a scary way to start our adventure. During the year we sailed the Bahamas I saw and heard things no child should see…white packets of drugs being dropped from small planes and cigarettes (long sleek speed boats) would swoop in and collect them from the sea. Sailboats being boarded by pirates who then killed the people, dumped them overboard in big black garbage bags and using it for their drug activity. I could write a book about it all. We didn’t sail the world though, just the Caribbean and we stopped in St. Maarten and lived there for 20 years.

Once again a great story. told so well. I was on the edge of my seat. Would I go on a water adventure like the Chandlers? Absolutely not. I love watching the sea, but I do not enter it. I did once when I went swimming with wild dolphins in Mozambique. I was quite reluctant to enter the water but did eventually. Why? I'm a strong swimmer, but I had a moment of panic when I realised that the sea does not have a bottom like a swimming pool!!

When I grew up in the 90s there were so many Somalis where I live in Southern California. They used to be shooting up the section 8 apartments in my neighborhood, back when there still was an actual gang precense in San Diego, but they chilled out or have like moved out of town since the 2000s and more recently I see way more Haitians have moved to town. Maybe it has to do with the government not paying them if they dont start a business idk its expensive here haha. I used to get them and the Ethiopian and Eritrean kids all confused 😅

Pretty pathetic that the UK didn't send a task force in for them, that's a special forces matter. They just completely abandoned their citizens, it would be a different story if they were cruising directly off the Somali coast, they weren't though, they were sailing in an area where one could reasonably expected pirates would not be.

Really great. I do wonder sometimes what I'd do if I were kidnapped, as highly unlikely as it is... Most political kidnappings are carried out by really desperate people. I think I'd want to dig deep and find out why they were pushed to such drastic action. I mean, sometimes you might find yourself sympathising with the cause if not the way of going about trying to get attention. I might be tempted to offer to highlight their grievances and try and help them be heard. It would depend on what they were, of course... I'd be an absolute candidate for falling victim to Stockholm Syndrome, lol!!

The World Bank states $400 billion USD was claimed in ransom money off the Horn of Africa from 2005-2012. It’s a massive criminal enterprise. And it actually boosts the local economy because the pirates buy goods and services from locals. But it’s also one of the poorest countries in Africa, hit hard recently by droughts and widespread famine.
