How These STARGATE ATLANTIS Novels Continued the Story (Dial the Gate)

STARGATE ATLANTIS fans were obviously disappointed when the show was cancelled after five seasons. The producers wanted to continue (and had outlined story ideas for a sixth season), and the Ancient city was never meant to abandon the Pegasus Galaxy in its struggle with the Wraith.
Enter FANDEMONIUM, the U.K.-based publisher of Stargate's licensed novels. After it became clear that Atlantis wasn't going to get its on-screen continuation, editor Sally Malcolm and her writers pitched MGM on a book series that would continue the storyline out past the final episode, "Enemy At the Gate." The extraordinarily popular STARGATE ATLANTIS: LEGACY series was born, and today it stretches over eight books and various novellas and short stories.

What I would LOVE is if you could make a Google Doc excel and list the exact order of these books we should read chronologically following the end of the TV series. I'm getting a bit confused on the order of books and which are really necessary (I want to avoid any extra short stories or books that go outside of the main timeline/events). Do you have something like that?

I've read the 8 Legacy novels these past few months and they are fantastic. A very satisfying conclusion to many of the unresolved storylines of SGA. I wish the same authors would do the same for SGU.

The novels are licensed by MGM, who works with the publisher and authors to try and keep the tone and "voice" accurate to Stargate's brand. But they are not canon.

At least in the books they stopped killing Dr. Weir over and over and actually brought her back! I hated how my favourite character's ark ended in SGA:(

Well i would imagine Nadia, that in the novels, the athours care about the characters and, because they want the fans to buy the books care about those fans. In the shows, you have the networks who decide to kill off popular characters(Dr Janet Fraiser and Dr Carson Beckett), with no regard for the fans, and the actors who play those characters. Teryl Rothery, who played Janet Fraiser, and Paul McGILLION, who played Carson Beckett, have gone on record as being devastated by being written out of the shows.

I thought the Legacy books were ok. However, I didn't like that Atlantis went back to Pegasus. I came up with my own storyline about them pitching the idea of using the Odyssey to go to the Lord Protectors planet, where there is another ancient city. The idea was to negotiate with the people to let them set up base in the tower for supplies (food and equipment), but once they arrive, they find that the planet has been culled. With no one to negotiate with, they move into the tower, place the stargate there, and begin to restore the place and go on missions. I rebranded it Stargate Pegasus Pursuit.

The original movie that started the franchise was based off a series of novels, and the original novels were vastly different in the direction the story went compared to the show

Sally addressed this in the conversation. She'd love to see more on the Legacy continuity, but there is presently nothing new in the works. It would start with the series authors wanting to come back to it and make a pitch to Fandemonium and MGM.

Honestly, I was fine with the Wraith not getting completely defeated like the System Lords were. I think that they had been set up so well as a seemingly unbeatable foe, that the Atlantis expedition's ultimate victory against them to be stopping a culling of Earth is a good way to end it. Yes, the Wraith still terrorize the Pegasus Galaxy, but considering the way the Wraith were written, did we really expect them to be completely killed off? That would be genocide of an entire species, which would be completely out of character for any of the SG teams (except perhaps Dr. Rush, but he wasn't there, was he?). The story could be continued, yes, but without some extremely difficult and/or convoluted plot devices, the Wraith cannot reasonably be defeated for good, and keep the main characters actions consistent. Edit: I'm writing this before I watch the video, so it's entirely possible I'm just talking out my own ears.

Yeah, in a sense I'd have expected the experiments to convert Wraith to Human would have continued in some form, maybe not elimination entirely, but evolution to allow them to still continue as is, but capable of consuming food or changing their feeding process in some other way to allow feeding off farmed animals more efficiently so they didn't need to feed off Humans. Maybe with a few extreme cells still hiding out and causing problems for them until they get eliminated. Probably some situations where an all out war almost happens between the now-peaceful Wraith relations. (which we saw a few times to a small extent when it benefited both Human and Wraith) That would be an amazing storyline to work with. So much better than just "nuke them from orbit". (which literally happened with the replicators lol)

@@Hunnter2k3 I think the replicators wouldn't be considered genocided because technically they're not a species, they're mechanical in nature. Even the human form replicators were technically mechanical, and thus not truly alive.

David and I talk about this in the upcoming "SG-4" conversation on the Dial the Gate channel this Sunday. I like this idea that the ultimate way to deal with the Wraith threat was not to commit genocide again but to figure out how to wean them off of feeding on sentient lifeforms.

I always felt that the solution to the wrath conflict us the bring cattle, sheep and goats from Earth and let the wrath feed on them then the humans agree to raise large herds for the wrath to feed on. The humans could send a signal to wake them up to feed.

There's no indication that cattle have the same "life force" energy that the Wraith require. This may be based in part on how they evolved through the iratus bug's consumption of human DNA.

Earth has such a variety of life that there is bound to be something that they could feed on. Pig biology are often times sited to be similar to humans. Go even closer, monkeys. Some species of them can be very prolific breeders. Species that has limited food sources are destined to die off.

Legacy books 1 through 6 are top notch in every way. Books 7 and 8 are less so, but still good. Book 9 ( Pride of the Genii) focuses on Ladon and Genii politics, but is actually a very good book. Again, books 1 thru 6 are not to be missed. An aside, I find it quite amazing that the host of this channel, a Stargate super fan, has not read these.
