Most effects in anime are drawn 2D. Even more complex effects are made from post processing applied to 2D effects animation. Fully 3D effects are used more rarely and often serve as a supplement to the main 2D effects in the composition.

No they aren't. That hasn't been true since the 2000s. Most effects you see in modern anime are unfortunately 3d.

@@RawPowerComics Dude you are 100 percent wrong. Unless you are referring to compositing which is still mostly based upon 2D work. Sure, there are some shows which use mainly 3D effects but they are the exception not the norm

@@arkle111 No they're not the exception. Even most strictly 2d shows use 3d effects. Especially particle effects. You just don't understand the process or you have a terrible eye.

you're both wrong, it's a mix of both 2D and 3D depending on complexity and goal of the effect. Most are 2D alphas composited on top of footage and animated and enhanced via additional layers. Some, especially things like swooshing water and trails following objects that change in the depth of the scene are often animated on simple 3D geo with scrolling/scaling/transforming textures and animated in a 3D space to easily get accurate depth that are then composited into the 2D scene and further enhanced in the same way 2D vfx elements are. This isn't just true of anime, it's true of everything that needs vfx elements including 2D videogames.

My current project is toon shade style. I’ve been switching to different systems over the last month trying to get just the right look. There are so many options and techniques but they are almost all tied to a particular render engine, Blender build, only runs on CPU, etc… Without comping stuff, i can’t mix and match a lot and that’s been frustrating but I’ve learned a lot.

last year at my university for the final thesis they pick a random group people(programmers and artist) and make u work like in a professional environment. I was really used to hard modelling and my team picked stylized game. Bro.... i went through a lot of mental break downs trying to figure it out what stylized art means until a dude in a reddit comment gave me the key. They ask me to model and animate a few creatures first was a Boar and a Goblin and since those 2 little shits where the one that introduced me into stylized style i made them a small scene. Now i cant stop modelling creatures xd is been awhile i dont do anything hard surface. But yea i understand what u mean when i read frustration. I also got lucky my teacher was the creator of the game Madison Alexis Di stefano he teached us a lot of cool stuff the last year was a bless for me.

I always used to love the 3D FX work in the Final Fantasy games, and found myself working in VFX doing 3D FX work, albeit less stylistically. I've always wanted to pivot to making more stylised FX so maybe that should be my next step

So, for those super dynamaic scenes like in Ufotable shows or Pokemon XY, they just make the 3D animation with mannequin instead of characters, then draw the characters in 2D and just put in in there?
