The “Say Uncle” episode was very important to the plot and was supposed to be Season 2 Episode 1. If you’ve already watched it like you said in the video… … the reason it’s so important is because Uncle Grandpa teaches Steven how to summon his shield instead of it just randomly happening.

Tom Sharpling, voice of Greg, has gone on record to say the hardest part about voicing Greg was the singing because he doesn't think he's a very good singer and thinks his voice butchers the demos Rebecca Sugar would send. This is ironic because Like A Comet is one of my favorite songs in Steven Universe! It's got a great vibe and perfectly captures Greg and Rose's natures.
@elkins4406Ай бұрын
For someone so dubious about his singing ability, he does such a good job IMO distinguishing between 20-something Greg's peak singing voice and older Greg's rustier, fallen-into-some-disuse pipes. I think he does a really great job with all the singing parts in this show.

A star has always been the emblem of the Crystal Gems, it was just a coincidence. But the fact that it was a coincidence shows that Greg and Rose truly were made for each other, both runaways who rejected their assigned purposes and made their own lives elsewhere. And let's not forget, Rose's favourite thing about humans is that they're free to change. Greg lives in a van, his surroundings and life are changing constantly

Fun fact: the T-shirt episode was the least replayed in reruns, to the point it didn't show up in some marathon runs on Cartoon Network. My favourite detail of the “Say Uncle” episode is that its entirely canon, even if it says that its not. It foreshadows a lot of things! The problem with "Uncle Grandpa" was that it was a show out of its time. In the early 2010s cartoons were shifting to be more more story-driven, like "Adventure Time" and "Steven Universe", and a goofy episodic show about wacky shenanigans was kind of out of place. If "Uncle Grandpa" had been around 5 or 10 years earlier, in the era of shows like "Chowder" and "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends", it might have been better received. To be fair, "Uncle Grandpa" _did_ run for five whole seasons, so it's not like it was UNpopular, it just didn't quite fit in with shows like "Aventure Time" or "Steven Universe".

I hate when people call episodes of a show like Steven Universe "filler." This isn't an anime that's based on a manga where they add in stuff that's not in the story just to pad out run-time. Every episode is part of the story. Even if nothing plot relevant happens, it's important. Just like in some movies, there'll be no music during a dramatic scene or there'll be a certain shot where nothing happens for several seconds. It's called giving the story time to breathe. You need the down-to-Earth everyday stuff to put the end-of-the-world stuff into perspective. There's a show called Final Space, which on paper did everything right in terms of animation, acting, story, presentation, but I HATED it, because of the pacing. It is paced incredibly fast. It goes from one crisis to the next with jarring speed. There's no down-time. No moments where the characters are just being themselves outside of a life-threatening situation. It makes the world feel really hollow and any stakes feel artificial. That being said, the Uncle Grandpa episode is 1000% filler. A horrible abomination forced upon them by the network and never intended to be part of the story. It's so insulting that they forced Rebecca Sugar to tack that on to her show.
@jlilley73Ай бұрын
"Endless Space" sounds like like Dr. Who. Every episode holds mortal danger for either a key character or entire worlds. It's exhausting sometimes.
@PhoboskomboaАй бұрын
@@jlilley73 It's not just that this is the case on an episode basis. Even within the episode, there is no dead-time. No time for a moment to land. Someone finishes their line and we jump cut to the next scene. It almost feels like that super fast side-effects list at the end of medication commercials, the show. It's like an over-correction from the pacing issues that you get in anime when they're trying to pad out time to not catch up to the manga. How every line, you get 5 or 6 reaction shots. Imagine the opposite of that. Never any reaction to anything. It's just as jarring, if harder to figure out why.

I think that people who were watching the show week by week when Say Uncle came out resent it to a degree that's hard to fully fathom for those of us who saw it in the course of a binge of at least several episodes in one sitting. I think it probably also earned some ire from people who were still very young when they watched it. How dare they sully my Very Grown-Up Steven Universe cartoon with something that's for _babies_ like Uncle Grandpa! That sort of thing. Again, something that's maybe a little hard for those of us who were already middle-aged when this show came out to empathize with.
