As far as I remember, British Commandos were taught to stab sentries in the back, going through a lung and aiming for the heart, even if you didn't kill them first time, the punctured lung stops them making noise.

I mean... A stab to the nape of the neck is still used by hunters to kill injured animals that for some reason can't be shot (lying on a road where each angle could cause ricochet). It severs the top most part of the spinal cord/ lowest part of the brain stem.

erm, yes but in the zombie apocalypse like twd they decompose extremely slowly and can still keep going until their muscles and tendons to move parts around are decomposed then that would stop the zombie from getting around. but to get to that stage would take maybe 20 or 25 years or something which in an apocalyptic world like that surviving for 20 years would be very hard. and then getting to that isolated place your going to need, food, water shelter ect. But if they decomposed even longer lets say like 80 years then if you really wanted to secure the chance for humans to be around in 80 years what you would need to do is just as the zombie virus happened NASA would need make a massive rocket ships that could take a good substantial amount of people, obviosly theyd all be thoroughly tested if they had the virus, but anyway then you would need to travel near a black hole or a place that has a very high gravitational pull making it possible to bend space time meaning that 1 month on that planet might be 7 years on another planet. so then you could settle down on that planet and go back to earth when the apocalypse is over. obviosly this is just a theory and also their arnt any black holes near earth that we can travel to but if their were than you could very well do that possibly.

@@couchpotato4082 well that is the dead. If we talk about zombies like Korean movies where it is a just a virus like train to busan or like in resident evil where it was a virus being spread that attacks the human nervous system where a human cannot think logically or be in their 5 senses at all. Then maybe it can happen. Viruses can do all kinds of crazy things on humans. A zombie outbreak can be like rabies. Where it makes animals behave in a certain way. But who would want to make a virus that makes humans crazy and without emotions? Only crazy sick people would want to invent something like that.

Isn't there a scene in season 2 where that scientist explains how the virus or bacteria restarts the brain stem? I believe that he even means/says that it restarts only the brain stem, by that logic attacking anywhere but the neck would be utterly useless since it's dead and non functional since it hasn't been restarted

In the walking dead they show that the only active part of the brain is right around the brain stem, most of the brain is just meat and would be useless to stab into. Walking dead zombies the brain stem is the only target, something that has been irritating me about the series since it started. Worse when they pointed out that is how it works in that universe. Which would also make stabbing through the front of the neck to work just fine as well. Of course you could also slice hamstrings so they can't walk and are stuck crawling, jaw tendons so they can't bite, tendons in the arm pits so they can't move their arms, wrists will make it hard to use their hands, just cause they can't feel the pain, doesn't mean they don't still need those things to function.
@devannyblanco3309

So basically the brain still needs to be active but not it's nervous system correct? Yea I think what can be made to create a zombie. I just hope there aren't crazy sick scientists who would want to create a virus to make humans into rabid flesh eating animals who have no sense of humanity at all.

Dude they know, most of these people have actually fired weapons and gone through weapons training in real life, actors included - they're upholding the hollywood fantasy. They have to appeal to multiple audiences, including a lot of asia - which are massive consumers of what is essentially bad cinema. If they actually made it realistic they'd turn off their main consumer base completely. They are making the show absolutely as designed for their target audience. Were this show targeted towards intelligent adults with a basic understanding for warfare or morality, then it'd be a complete failure on their part. Just about everyone who makes an action movie is completely and utterly aware that silencers don't make a pting noise, but they do it anyway because it's iconic and cool.

wouldn't something like a sledge hammer be better in terms of targeting the brain? forceful so it'll still crack skulls but light enough the average person can run with it or swing it at multiple targets. plus you wouldn't run out of ammunition or risk getting it lodged in zombies.

EA plain and simple, spend more effort trying to squeeze their customers for money than they do in actually making a good game. Like it literally has an f2p business model, but they charge full price for it. Now try not to defend them too hard or you'll make it obvious who you're working for... One thing I've always wondered is how they get some of their smooth-edged bladed back out of a skull (not just TWD, but any skull-stabbing scenes). If you use a blade that's smooth, it can create a sort of vacuum on the blade, making it a LOT harder to pull back out.

In The Return of the Living Dead, the film known for introducing the popular concept of zombies eating brains, as opposed to just eating human flesh, they actually know what zombies are!! Spoiler Warning for a movie from 1985 hahaha The 1st 2 ppl that encounter one immediately cut off it's head knowing that that is the way to kill a zombie. Unfortunately the zombies in the movie are not normal zombies and just won't die [similar to the mad z's in the latest seasons of z-nation] However, and even more unfortunately, when they take it to a crematorium to burn the still attacking parts, the smoke goes up into a raincloud that rains and makes more zombies!!!! If a zombie is dead, there's no living tissue at all. Obviously. But how long would it take for one to completely decompose to the point of not being able to function? What's causing the muscles to move, and can the necrosis cause them to atrophy? I just wanna lock one in a room with a ton of dermestid beetles and see what happens. I'm kinda morbid like that.

SongDog7 Good question. Matpat did an estimate on how long it would take for the "original" entire zombie population to decay and be unfunctional but I'm guessing that's not the answer you've wanted. I'd say a full rooting zombie to die is approximately 11 years. Taking various factors of course, if it was in an empty room, made out of ceramic, it would take a while to decompose fully.

I've heard classic Romero zombies show an uncanny resistance to decomp. It does happen, but at a tiny fraction of the rate it normally goes or their existence would be measured in days or weeks. Dermestids pose an interesting question. If insects attacked zombies the way they do regular corpses they'd last about a week. Assuming the dermestids aren't inhibited by some intrinsic property of the zombie they'd skeletonize it in hours. You'd get to watch it move around while being eaten.

Although this isn't as exciting as a gun or sword, the best zombie weapon is a long pole with a windchime tied to the end. In the Walking Dead, zombies are attracted to sound. For other zombies, just use an attractive bait on the end like chum. If you hold this pole, you can redirect the zombie away from you. Best of all, if you tie the pole over a cliff or a rooftop, you have an infinite, repeating zombie killing machine as zombies are dumb enough to walk over the edge in pursuit of the bait and splatter their brains on the pavement below. And you don't need to be anywhere near the action, so you're not putting yourself in danger. Set up a bunch of these all over and soon the zombie hordes will self-eliminate and the world becomes safe again!

I had a similar idea reading wwz. Nothing so basic as a carrot on a stick, that im holding, but similar in concept. They still had lots of resources in wwz and the people to use them. They had heavy resources like military weapons and heavy equipment and stuff like that. What they needed was the ability to make a deep and narrow hole in the ground. Think of a cone like a megaphone. Deep and wide but lets say only its width would only be like 5% of its depth. Something like that. Where it gets most of its volume from its depth rather than its width. Then suspend a noise maker or other bait over the hole, and the zombies will simply fall into it trying to get the bait. The hole can only ever empty out to the point that the zombies can climb. After that, they are dumb zombies, they will fall right back in to get the bait. In fact a relatively few of these could be used to concentrate the zombies in any given area to a relatively small zone that could then be cordoned off and dealt with in a pretty manageable fashion. Depending on your zombies of course. It wouldnt work well for most of the z's in a story like we're alive, or smart zombies, or ones that can jump high or climb well. But most of the NOTLD type z's and wwz and twd types would line right up and shamble right on in. Wwz comments are based on the book and not the movie. In fact they did a similar thing in one of the chapters of wwz. I believe it was called reddekers plan or something like that. It involved creating little concentration camps of people that were fenced off throughout the hot zone. These were actual people not infected, but simply bait people. They were actually given supply drops so they could stay alive long enough to simply act as lures and distraction for the hordes so the majority of the population could escape.

The whole series is only focused on zombies and they are the main obstacle throughout the series.

Chain mail is really material and labor intensive. Its also difficult to put on and take off. And unless you want hundreds of little potential infection sites due to pinch cuts from the chain mail, you are gonna need some clothes on under the mail, and unless you use aluminum which is possible, its gonna rust. Its also fucking heavy as fuck for a tunic and leggings. The kingdom probably has about the best idea with sports armor like from paint ball. Its agile and offers the greatest protection vs weight and difficulty in getting. Motorcycle racing clothes would also be good for this, but like mail its heavy and hot. It would probably be better at resisting bites though due to its finer weave and resistance to liquid infiltration. Even with mail, infection from a bite would be possible, since a walker is gonna bite down on the mail, pressing it into your flesh and that could still cut the skin with the weld points or rivets if you use riveted mail. Their saliva is ostensibly the vector for transmission and since that would be more or less in contact with the open wound, you would still have some chance of infection from a bite. Motorcycles racing suits are basically like tires, they are fine steel mesh of a sort sanwhiched between layer of a tough material. The material is typically a kevlar composite which is abrasion and wear resistant and somewhat of a moisture barrier. And theres at least two layers of it. Inner, mesh, outer. Thinking of tires. Lots of cultures use discarded tires to make very long lasting footwear. Even using bias ply type tires would offer great bite protection and be much easier to process than steel belted radials. The rubber would be thick enough that very little could bite throufh it much less a human type mouth. You could make some great armor out of tires. But it would be hot and heavy too. Martial arts pu dipped foam sparring gear would also make great armor. Though with more coverage comes more heat retention. Its thick and hard to bite through.

As a neurologist I like this episode. It should be mentioned thought that blunt trauma to the skull will produce injuries to the brain as the skull hits the brain then the brain hits the back of the skull (coup / countracoup injury). And spinal cord injury can occur without penetrating trauma to the spine, so it might be enough to hit a zombie with a baseball bat high in the back of the neck.

In the Walking Dead, when they visit the CDC, they learn that only the Brain Stem is activated by the Pathogen. So when they hit the front, or anything but the Stem, nothing should happen. The scientist at the end of season one shows that its only the brain stem (and maybe a little bit above that, i'm not sure on exact brain regions) that is infected and controlling the body. So really destroying the main mass of the brain should have about as much effect as stabbing it in the heart, which is to say: none.

Zombies aren't just a modern idea, pretty much every culture in human history has its own version of the Living Dead, the most (in)famous one being Voodun. The only thing zombie movies did was popularize one or two versions of the undead creature, so in all honesty, some of the more well read members of the cast or those that are traditionalist should have had their own ideas on the whole thing, or at least compared it with what they know.

Most people on youtube who got a sponsorship from battlefront II were locked into a contract far before the game out. When many youtubers were allowed to demo the game, they didn't see anything that hinted at all of the BS microtransactions. So thats another thing to chock up to EA being assholes, rather than the individual people who were locked into this without knowing that they were gonna pull that BS

One movement that is historically documented as being used by Roman gladiators to stab someone in the brain was to use a forward curving sword like the Sica, and swing upwards with the tip under the chin and through the roof of the mouth. Not only avoids the hard bones on the top of the skull, but also a gladiator's helmet. So what I'd use is a something like a dacian 2h falx, the kind depicted on the Tropaeum Traiani, (which really is more like a short polearm) or possibly a bec-de-corbin or horseman's pick and do just that: swing upwards with the beak and try to hit upwards through the roof of the mouth. You can put a lot of leverage and thus momentum into that kind of a swing when you use both hands, much more so than stabbing with a dagger in the head. And it's a larger target so you can't miss as easily as when trying to stab it in the eye. If a falx is not an option, a good curved sabre with a good stabby kind of tip might work for an upwards stab instead. I'm also not sure I'd use a bowie knife in any case. I'd want something with a thin stiff tip, for putting a lot of pressure through a small area. Something like a stiletto, or a medieval misericord. Some of which were triangular in section. Very stiff and narrow thing, basically. Really a thin stiff spike with a handle. Or if I want range, a smallsword is the same thing: a thin stiff spike on a handle. Except longer. Ah, but what if I don't have one? Well, frankly, if I can get a good katana (and not the stainless wallhanger type from the mall) in that scenario, I don't see why I can't get a good dagger :p But worst case scenario, you could always just heat and hammer a railroad spike into a thinner spike, and put it on a handle. There you go, home-made horseman's pick. What do you think?

I'd love to hear an analysis on the whole idea of "zombies"/living dead. If the brain, which controls every function of a person, has died, how does it regain "life?" Furthermore, how does the mind that can't remember anything and has lost some function from rotting, work? I could go on and on pondering every aspect of "zobification."

Old comment, but it got me thinking-Shouldn’t killing a zombie be the same as killing a regular person? Zombies shouldn’t be able to move without the flow of blood, which needs the heart pumping. If their heart quit pumping and their organs stopped moving, how could their muscles work in an organized, functional way? How could they perceive where things are to attack if there’s no blood flow to the brain?

not simply just a matter of style of weapon but the sharpness of the blade and amount of force needed in a single swing to hack thru thick layers of bone or flesh. a dull blade would not cut completely thru and is likely to get stuck half way thru leaving you vulnerable to attack if you are surrounded by more than one zombie and bones are not so easily broken as movies would have you believe :P it requires lots of strength to bust some of the more thicker and denser bones in the body compared to those like the rib bones or finger bones which can easily be snapped by bending them with a great amount of pressure.

Next problem, weapon retrieval. Once a blade penetrates human flesh ( even partially decomposed) the flesh collapses and envelopes the blade, providing an surrounding suction-like effect that can make it difficult to withdraw. If your blade doesn't leave the body in the same move as the entry wound then you run a considerable risk of having to spend several moments trying to pull it out again. Or simply abandon the weapon until the fight is over, so better make the first strike count because the weapon may not be available for a second attempt.
