We all have those albums that were released in that magical period of life where we were just discovering the mystery and miracle of music. For me the years of 1982-1987 were that wondrous time. One album that stand out as one of the pinnacles of my childhood and that I’ve heard at least 100 times all the way through is No Jacket Required by Phil Collins. A little history on Phil going solo. He took a break from Genesis to release his debut, Face Value in 1981, an emotional juggernaut, song he wrote during the painful breakup with his first wife. It was a big success selling over 5 million copies in the us and 1.5 in the UK. Then phil released Hello I must Be Going in 82, another multi-platinum affair which contained his first top 10, You can’t Hurry Love. Then he was nominated for a slew of awards for his heart wrenching ballad, Against All Odds from the movie of the same name.
He was nominated for an Oscar and golden globe for best original song, he lost both but did win a grammy for best male pop vocal performance. Right after that, Phil dropped his third album No Jacket Required, It would blast into the stratosphere, putting the likes of Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince on notice. Phil was at the top of the charts. The album debuted at #1 in the UK and it would later spend 7 weeks at #1 on Billboard 200 selling 12 million copies in America alone. MAKING NO JACKET REQUIRED ONE OF THE TOP 50 SELLING ALBUMS OF ALL TIME.
“One More Night” is composed and performed with an intense yearning & empathic anxiety webbed in a fragile love that could be lost if you make the wrong move. We can all relate to the nervousness you experience in a young relationship- when you have strong feelings for someone, and you struggle with how to find that balance between letting them know how you feel, and not blowing it by appearing desperate. Phil nailed that angst in verse 2:"I've been sitting here so long, wasting time Just staring at the phone And I was wondering should I call you Then I thought, maybe you're not alone

I love Phil Collins with Genesis and solo. I never understood why many people especially in the media mock and disrespect him. He’s one of the greatest drummers ever and he’s written some great songs. Why does Peter Gabriel get lauded for ballads like “In Your Eyes” while Phil Collins gets attacked for “One More Night”? “Sussudio” is a great f’ing song and I’ll take it any day over “WAP” or most of the garbage on radio today.

I have tried to enjoy Genesis' early material, time after time, but I can't help but find it pretentious, boring complexity for the sake of complexity - something Gabriel himself has admitted was their approach. People forget but Phil Collins produced an album by singer Frida, one of the members of the band ABBA. She had her only hit in the United States with “there’s something going on,” completely produced by Phil. And the Phil Collins sound is everywhere on that single. I forgot how big No Jacket Required was. Hit after hit. Phil was on a such a roll that he makes it seem so effortless even though it wasn't. These songs were all over the radio and MTV. You couldn't escape them if you wanted to. Adam, I was also 9 years old at the time. Music like this made it a great time to be a kid. Thanks for another great piece!

Phil was huge in the early 80s. To have released Duke, Face Value, Abacab, Hello I Must Be Going, Genesis, No Jacket Required, and Invisible Touch all from 1980-1986 is just incredibly productive. Dozens of great songs on those albums. I was 20 in 1980, so you can imagine the influence Phil's music had on me.

Around 1990 my brother and I used to play a game called where's Phil. He was always somewhere on the radio whether it was the Adult Contemporary, Classic rock, or Pop station. It kept us entertained on the 15 and 86 between Blackfoot and American Falls.

There was a really funny SNL skit in 1991 called the Sinead O'Connor Awards. The premise was to knock on how only the most commercially successful artists win awards. Phil Collins was nominated for every award and won "Most Empty Song". Don't know how relevant this is but maybe a testament to how massive and relevant he was.

Miami Vice is making a comeback after nearly forty years. You can see their teaser trailer on KZbin. Take Me Home plays softly underneath the images. But it is only be bare bones of the melody with no words. It leaves all Gen Xers saying, "I know that song. What the hell is that song?" It forces you to search it out. I recommend that you hit the jackpot by playing the 12-inch extended version posted a couple of years ago by someone in 2014.

1m32s, _In the Air Tonight._ This was the song it seemed you couldn't watch an episode of Miami Vice without hearing, at some point in every show... Not having paid so close attention to such things, I tend to confuse Phil sometimes with that other former Genesis member who went big as a solo, Peter Gabriel. Fun fact: As years went on, Collins became unhappy with the album and grew to dislike it 😀. In an interview, he said in retrospect that it is among his least favourite records he had made. One song that he really loves to this day is "Take Me Home".

For example, George Michael said that "Careless Whisper" meant something to a lot of people, but never really meant anything to him because he was only 17 when he wrote it. Martin Gore considers "People Are People" one of his least favorite Depeche Mode songs. Thom Yorke of Radiohead hates "Creep". It's fascinating that some artists have a completely different relationship with their most successful or groundbreaking songs than the public does.

My favorite cousin and I used to share a lot of music, and this was one of those albums we both enjoyed listening to together. I've actually been listening to a lot of Phil Collins lately. My 5 year old grandson is a huge fan, thanks to me, and wrote Mr. Collins a letter. Phil's publicist, as Phil can no longer write, wrote him back and sent an old autographed picture. As much as I already admired Phil Collins, my admiration for taking the time to dictate the letter to such a young fan increased! As for this album, "Take Me Home" is one of my favorite Collins songs period, so it is my favorite track on No Jacket Required. Everything else on the album ties for second! Stuermen's solo on "Don't Lose That Number" is outstanding!

Phil's follow-up solo album "...But Seriously" was just as impressive. It wrapped up the '80s with the No. 1 hit "Another Day In Paradise" and produced a string of hits in 1990 that included "I Wish It Would Rain Down" and "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven."

This was the first rock album I ever got in a store. My mother bought me the cassette for me in Sears. At the time I would have still been 5. I can still picture it, the display on the counter of the checkout. I wore that tape out eventually, although it lasted a lot of years. Of course I have both CDs and the original LP. There use to be a cartoon in the Orlando Sentinel I think was called Dave. There was a strip once where he gets an album he needed to complete his set of this one album on all formats. For me, this album is the the kinda album you do that for.

I saw that Tour poster in your segment. I had just finished 8th grade that summer and my friend Jason and I went to Phil's Saratoga Springs, NY show on June 23rd, 1985. It was one of the first 3 or 4 concerts I had ever attended and Phil really delivered a great performance. We left the show before the encore and I found out later that the Pointer Sisters had watched the show from the front row and were invited up on stage to sing a number with Phil and the band. We missed it! From that show forward, I never left a show till the stage lights came up, not wanting to miss any huge surprises like I did that night when I was 13. I caught a Genesis concert in 2008 and Phil was still rocking albeit one or two steps down on the scale.

I have this CD. "One More Night" was very memorable. I remember getting a telescope for Christmas in 1984, and listening to the current hits on the radio at night while looking at the moon & Jupiter. "One More Night" was one of the songs that I remember distinctly. All of the hits on the CD are great. I TOTALLY forgot about the song "We Said Hello Goodbye"!!! I remember hearing that in the 80's. It wasn't released as a single, but I do remember it getting some radio airplay. Judging by the chart positions & units sold, it looks like Phil Collins was a lot more popular in the USA than in his native England!

Phil Collins was hugely popular in Canada. I went to at least 3 or 4 concerts in Vancouver, and this album tour was one of them. one concert I always remember, without trying to recall them. Brilliant, songwriter, musician, vocalists of my lifetime. I wish Phil all the best in his health, and he is still great.

Nostalgia story time! When I was nine years old and obsessed with STAR WARS and TRANSFORMERS my best friend at the time suddenly started to become interested in music. We'd hang out and while I would just want to draw pictures of Indiana Jones he would be talking about songs like Phil Collins' 'Take Me Home' and 'Broken Wings' by Mister Mister; you know, stuff that was on the radio at the time. He was really into it, which was a bit weird because all I cared about at that age was movies and toys. He moved away about a year later, and probably ten years ago I looked his name up online and found that he had become a music journalist, and had written for Rolling Stone among others. I never reached out to him, but I was so proud that he obviously found his passion that early and pursued it.

I remember an interview that Phil Collins had, where he told the interviewer that Billy from 'Don't Forget My Number' was his friend Eric Clapton, who at the time of the writing of the song had a serious cocaine addiction. Phil wanted him to know that he's a phone call away if he wanted help. I don't know if Phil said this to just have an explanation for the song, or if this was actually the basis of the song. But it sure gives it a deeper meaning.

He is very talented but I could just never get into his music the way my friends did. However, I always loved how I could see how his music would transform something inside my friends, something blissful and nostalgic, whenever they heard/hear his music. That is a treasure that is always worth witnessing!

Dude, you're killing me with these great videos. You speak of being 9 years old when listening to this LP, bouncing on your trampoline. This was one of the most listened to albums of my senior year in HS. "One More Night" to a 17-18 year old kid who just split with a girl he foolishly dreamt of marrying was a gut punch. Like you, "Inside Out" was my slam dunk favorite track. Cover to cover it was one of the best albums of my teen years. IMHO, one that was even better is one which I would love for you to cover in a future video (if you haven't already done so), the predecessor to "No Jacket Required", "Hello, I Must Be Going". Thanks again for these videos that help me relive my youth just a little bit.

Here’s trivia for you. In the BAR (NOT THE DINING AREA) of Chicago’s Palmer House Hotel’s “Pump Room”, the padded edge of the bar and the booths around the outer walls of the bar area, it was all upholstered in red leather. This was in the 1930’s. How do I know? All that red leather upholstery was originally done by MY GRANDFATHER!

Here is something that happened in the spring of 1986. When take me home was coming down from the top ten, Mike and the mechanics were in the top ten with All I need is a miracle. Steve Hackett's GTR was in the top 40 with When the Heart Rules the Mind while Invisible touch form Genesis and Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel debut in the top 40 in the same countdown for one week only.

"Don't loose my number" is one of my favorite Phil Collins songs of all time........and one of my favorite videos. Showcasing all the music video tropes, and even the speaking part where the guy asks who's playing the guitar.... and "Take me home......" don't even get me started. Wow, just, wow....it speaks to me of the melancholy that I hold deep inside and acts like a catharsis when it feels like it might over take me. Thanx Adam. Great, on point video as always. Genesis Invisible Touch tour was my 1st stadium show, probably my 1st concert overall. In that era, Phil and Genesis were tops for me, the countless times I played No Jacket Required on cassette. Great music, my tastes changed, but those songs were amazing. Glad to be from Chicago, where Pump Room local legend brought the title of a great record.

“We Said Hello Goodbye” is definitely one of my favorites, too. Fantastic song! That orchestral beginning is masterful. As for “Take Me Home,” I can, indeed, see the mental patient aspect of the lyrics: trapped in a room, “there’s no point escaping”, “I’ve got no far horizons”, “they can’t turn out my feelings like they’re turning out the light”, … it’s definitely there, even if the music video doesn’t cover it; I’d actually latched onto the prisoner aspect before learning of his inspiration for the song. Either way, it’s one of his best, I think. I love the many different rhythms in the arrangement all working together. So good!

I remember long, long ago when the sun was shining. Sorry - that was actually from The Land Of Confusion by Genesis. He could do no wrong no matter which band Phil was in!! He took over for Peter Gabriel when he left Genesis to have a solo career and went on to do duets with other people as well as his own solo career and never had to look back. I think that Phil actually loved this album and is only lamenting the fact that he could never duplicate the success and the inspiration that this album had and that nothing he was written since then will! It's too bad since Phil Collins is one of the most talented musicians of our time. Also he will always have a special place in my heart personally as his music meant so much to me. I can never live my life again and have those times back but the music that he made had such an impact on me and the way that I have chosen to live in so many ways. It's unbelievable what one persons influence can have on so many others. Who knows what inspires us all to greatness but know that Phil Collins has inspired me and so many to it. I too was about ten years old when this album came out as I would turn eleven later that year. It made such an impact on my young life at that time. I'll never forget what good times and what good music we got to have because of Phil and others like him! Thank you so much for sharing this with us - a long walk back to amnesia lane from a much simpler and better time in life.

the 80s, my college years, were my musical awakening. i didn't have this album, but a lot of my favorites came from this year, and from all across the spectrum. the 80s wasn't just synths and mullets and parachute pants and padded shoulders. the music was really diverse and new sounds were constantly coming at us from all directions. as much as any other decade, 80s music was fresh and innovative and classic and relatable. sure there was lots of commercial garbage, but no matter your tastes, there's something there for everybody, even today's newer ears. i'm not committed to any decade as being the best, but i love this one as much as the rest.

It's a great album. One of the first albums I bought as a kid. "Don't lose my number" also has an amazing video. "Inside out" is still one of my favs of all time.

For me, & I'm pretty sure for many 80's kids, that's so much of what makes this music a requirement in our present lives. It's impossible to think of my childhood w/o thinking of Phil Collins' music. At the tme I didn't really pay attention to what was his Genesis work vs solo work. I just loved it all. Even the gut wreching "Against All Odds, a level of sadness I felt only w/ Toto's "I Wont Hold You Back." Cried everytime, but was still so beautiful it was the first real song I learned (voluntarily) to play when taking up the keyboard. Never knew the story behind "No Jacket Required," but thought it was a really cool title, so has stuck in my head for 36 years. Thanks for explaining that!

This albums was one of those albums where, at the time i put it in i was doing something else, it made me stop what i was doing and the lyrics just "pulled" me in then the music kept me there. I could associate this album with a lot of times in my life but it's just my take on how things went. And yes, "We Said Hello Goodbye" was one of my favorite tracks on the album and i agree with you, Adam, i like that version better. Still, "Billy Don't Lose My Number" got to me with the video, it was really memorable. I can't remember how many soundtracks Phil's music has been on but i remember, back then, they were everywhere.

This truly is one of those albums where it's impossible to find a bad song on it. I even grabbed the CD 12-inches which was a collection of all the extended mixes, which is a lot of fun. I saw Phil live in 1994 and it was one of the best concerts I had ever been to, but like you, I wish I could have heard "We Said Hello Goodbye." Great video, Adam.

First time watching your channel. Extremely well done. As to the subject, to think Genesis purists once thought Peter Gabriel’s exit was going to end Genesis... “The DRUMMER is going to take over?! What?!” “No Jacket Required” was the very first CD I ever bought (always vinyl up until then)... still have it and it is in perfect condition. My favorite track is “Inside Out”, although I will listen to the entire album and enjoy every song, that track always gets a second playing before I put the disc away! Thanks for the memories, Sir! "Take Me Home" is my all-time favorite Phil song. It takes me back to that era and of course my youth. Phil himself has said that it is one of his favorite tracks and is sure to play it every show.

You must be just a little bit younger than me. My "discovery" years were 80 - 83. Also during those years everything from the 70s was still being played on the radio and as a bonus in 1984, an FM oldies station began in my area that played all the hits of the 60s. It was like a magical whole new world!!!

One of my favorite albums from any artist or group. Phil Collins is one of my favorite artists and this album is a big reason for that. My favorite track is Sussidio. I loved "dance music" in the 80's and this song, along with Madonna's "Get Into the Groove", always got me moving. I was in my first "serious" relationship in 1985, and this album got played a *lot* in the cassette player when went parking in our favorite spot after leaving the movie or getting off from work. 😊 Brings back a lot of fond memories. 🙂

"No Jacket Required" was the last album I owned on cassette in 1985. " But Seriously" was first album I owned on CD. My favorite album from 1985 is "Brothers In Arms" "from Dire Straits.

I won't deny that No Jacket Required is a great album, but I urge everyone here to have a listen to Genesis's And Then There Were Three. It is excellent! I recently listened to it a few times after not hearing it for probably 20+ years and, man, I can tell you that it won't be another 20 years before I listen to it again! Fantastic music!

I still have going to one of his concerts on my bucket list. He is one of the greatest. As a photographer I got to photograph his daughter, Lilly, at a publicity event for one of her movies back in 2013, "City of bones". I first apologized to her because at the time I had never seen any of her work. And told her that it was a very special moment for me because it was the moment I was the closest I've ever been to Phil. "He is the greatest" I said. She smiled , "He is" she replied.

"No Jacket Required" has to be my favorite Phil Collins album. It certainly got me through some tough times growing up in a small town as a teenager, and into my twenties after I left home to be on my own. My top tracks from the album have to be "Take Me Home" and "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore?", the latter becoming an anthem of sorts for me whenever I encountered difficulties or heartbreak in relationships with young women. Phil Collins will always be my one of my best-loved go-to performers of the 80s for an uplifting rocking boost or a soothing lyrical balm for a mending heart.

i'll never forget in April (I think) 1985, i was a freshman in college and known as the resident Phil Collins/Genesis freak. A friend told me Phil had released a new song and it was on the radio. I sat and listened to One More Night and thought, OK, that's cool. Well, that turned out to be huge!

This album is an unqualified masterpiece. I’m a huge fan of this album. Easily one of the all time classics and I have lost count of how many times I’ve listened to it. My favorite non-single tracks on it are “Long Long Way to Go”, “Only You Know and I Know” and “Inside Out”. Inside Out being my absolute favorite out of all of them.

I was 10 years oldwhen this came out. My older brother handed me the tape and told me I "Had to" listen to it. Now. Played it, and by the time "Take Me Home" was over, it literally changed my life forever. Not only did it make me get "Face Value" and "Hello I Must Be Going", it's also when I learned about Genesis, which became 'my band'.... When I went to a school full of metalheads. This also made me want to become a musician. I took up every instrument I could find, studied theory, immersed myself into all styles of music, the art of songwriting and the history of the artists and I still do it to this day. I have worn out a cassette and a CD (yes.. a CD) of this album. Times have changed and I really don't listen to "Sussudio" and "Don't Lose My Number" that much. But "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore" helped get me through my divorce - as did a lot of his solo catalog - and "Take Me Home" is still one of the finest song ever written.

Phil's best album, and "Take Me Home" is my favorite Phil song of all time. I remember "We Said Hello Goodbye" got a fair amount of airplay in my area from being in that movie. I thought it was his new single but I never heard it on AT40, so I figured my assumption was wrong. When I got the NJR CD I was happy to have it as an unexpected bonus track

I saw that show too...in San Francisco. At first I thought Phil was playing a joke by coming out on stage using a cane. After all the tour was called 'Not Dead Yet'. But alas, I believe he explained that he'd recently had back surgery. But what a trooper! He could have pulled out until he was better. Very good show! He sounded great. His son on drums was special too!
