I love how this feels like a parody of american crafting youtube videos. Everything is powertools with those guys. :D
@foxykins6 күн бұрын
So, to be serious for a brief moment, I suspect it's because we import so much here. As someone who does woodworking, there's no way I could compete with the foreign mass-production prices (or even the wages to handmake things) without having to make everything as fast as possible. It just has to do with cheap foreign labor costs. If I had to charge for my time to handcraft things, there is zero chance of competing with what someone could buy at a large store. I guess if I filmed myself for hours using a hand plane, I might get a few extra sympathy dollars, but people only seem to appreciate time if it's an intricate art piece.
@Scapestoat5 күн бұрын
@@foxykins I'm not sure if it is that. It feels more like it just the crafting culture. It feels to me like Art for Art's Sake vs profit-per-hour. Something that someone could buy at a large store ... just doesn't compete with hand-crafted woodwork. Something that has been lovingly shaped is in an entirely different category. Both in the sense that different people will appreciate it for different reasons, and that it will be superior in both quality and craftsmanship. And thus price. And well, if you hand plane for hours, then you're probably not using a large enough variety of tools. :) That is not to say that the power-tools-and-epoxy method can't create nice results. It totally can. But it tends to do so while wasting a lot of material and power. And also annoying the heck out of neighbours with all the noise. There's definitely a market for both approaches, and it is all good. What my original message tried to convey is that it just isn't for me.

I'm reminded of art school. For one assignment I had to carve soap stone. I only had metal files and it took ages. I was jealous of my fringe who used a dremel but then she said it overheated every 5 minutes so it wasn't much better. I later carved a different kind of bowl from one of the scraps.

Instead of making rocks into bowls which in itself it pretty cool 😏 Try 2 bowls of larger and smaller size and add ice water preferred with ice and a good amount of salt and it will stay cold for hours. Its the way Italian galato is made in places where it can be fairly hot during summer back in the day before freezers.
