Sydney Kennett is one of the world's best indoor skydivers. The 14-year-old champion moves with the grace of a ballerina inside wind tunnels that propel air in excess of 100 miles per hour. Sydney holds numerous top prizes at competitions around the world, and she's even a Guinness World Record holder.

@@brettcameratraveler That would be cool, but very hard to make with our current technology. Because you would have to measure inputs, the closest thing we have to that is a multi-directional tredmil that isn't mass produced, and mapping your movements is hard enough on that. Though, a ready player one style thing would be cool.

Not necessarily. The tunnel in NC started a program for a membership program $500/month which gave you either the potential for 5 minutes a day or 30 minutes per week. So you share your time with someone else and it goes to potentially hours per week. Other places have adopted this. Also most if not all the kids in this sport have parents in the industry. So I’m guessing that her time is greatly reduced or free because of sponsorships.

@@zconsci I've done it and there's a springy bottom sort of like a trampoline but sturdier and fewer/thicker wires. It doesn't hurt to hit it. And for the ceiling, you can't hit it because of the way the air flow system works-after the glass ends it disperses more towards the sides so even if you go up super fast you will automatically lose lift after you pass that point. And to what zeu said, there was an instructor to guide the first flights. He let me go and I did occasionally bump the sides but there was no slamming because you use your arms and legs to push back. All in all, super fun experience-if you have the money!

You don’t have to be that rich. The cost for pro flyers is not that high, it usually about 800 usd for an hour without coaching. I realize this comment is a year old but... you should give real skydiving a shot! There are skydiving centers all over that offer tandem jumps for around $200-$250, and it's well worth it to try at least once. You'll be harnessed to an experienced skydiving instructor who will do pretty much everything, so you can just enjoy the thrill of your life on the way down!

The cost of flying in a wind tunnel is so expensive, forget the Olympics. Judging by the mere cost of training and competing, expect this to go of the way that Formula-1 did. Personally I would prefer Wired to highlight the diverse competitors in sports.

I'm not sure why there is any harsh judgement for or against what she is doing. I don't personally know her or the income level of her parents. She had an opportunity to pursue a very uncommon discipline and she has excelled at it. By looking at her body, flexibility, and grace it is clear that she has worked hard to be able to compete at the highest levels. We should always encourage people to pursue their dreams.
