aba also struggled with lack of characters, terrible balance, and long update droughts, sometimes hovering around 200 players, but kept adding new characters until eventually the roster was big enough to keep people around its just how these battlegrounds type games work, but a lot of devs get discouraged and quit the moment their game starts dipping in players

most games that last for years cant even compete with aba when it comes to playerbase, aba just has an abnormally loyal fanbase. a good example is arcane odyssey; its been out for awhile now but can only pull less than a half of aba's average player count without updates. sometimes its better off to just quit early, because, unless u get lucky and get an extremely loyal fanbase, ur just going to be losing more and more money trying to revive a dead game. if u think this isnt the case and aba's fanbase isnt all that loyal, try and name 10-15 roblox anime fighting games that can pull 4-5k players with no updates for multiple months. in my opinion, i think the best option is to shut down the game once its clear it has no chance of coming back, try to revamp it, and then re-release it with heavy advertising and youtuber support (kind of like how axs did before it fumbled with no updates and died again). if u do this AND consistently update afterwards, ur game might be saved.

That's the thing though, those issues didn't matter for ABA cause there was no competition. Their only rival was some anime game that had that "Make your OC" gamepass. If I find the name of it I'll edit this. Even at 200 players, it was beating it's only competition during the time, leaving it at roughly 60-75. If these battleground games came out earlier in ABA's lifespan, ABA would not be the top dog in terms of anime fighters. But no one challenged their uprising. So they went uncontested.

​@@personguy4864To bring up fanbases is also a true thing as well: The game is made by Snakeworl, the same dude who made what is by all accounts (fight me on this) the best DBZ game on the platform. Snakeworl, Ragoozer, and Archmage are unironically the Zoro, Luffy, and Sanji/Bakugo/Deku/Todoroki/Team 7 of Roblox devs. Their fanbase runs deep and justifiably so, theyre behind some of the most toxic yet memorable things out there. (Bleach Primeraa, Rogue lineage, DBZ final stand, NO:2, That other bleach CC, ABA, *Tales from the Valley*). These peeps have BUILT memories.

The problem with a lot of arena games that came after ABA is that ABA came first. No matter what you do as a developer, not a lot will beat the fact that ABA just has more characters. Unless a game comes out with mechanics that not only work smooth but also far outweigh the player experience that ABA offers I just don't think that it's possible for any other arena game to even touch them in player base.

Honestly the issue with battlegrounds / arena games in general is that there's no innovation or at least improvement over the big, big contenders. Why would you play AU:R if not to just play your favorite character that isn't in ABA yet? The combat is the same, the maps are negligible and other than that there's barely other features. I've seen this as a tester and active community member of Cartoon Smackdown. It's for sure that the game had a dope idea, it was the standard arena fighter, but with cartoons (genius). And while it strayed from the repetitiveness of the same anime fighting games by using a new medium for their roster, at it's core it was basically just inferior ABA. The balance was doo-doo, the game was clunky and the owner Anon was self-conceited as hell. All in all, while the movesets were kinda creative the execution was horrible and there was nothing to do but play FFA forever.

here's my opinion on why these games died (like anyone asked for it) aur just randomly stopped getting updated. almost any game that starts out with like 10k+ players can stay alive if it gets updated consistently, like 1-2 times a week, but aur didnt/couldnt keep up. the combat was also just a watered down version of aba's (not only was it not as smooth, it wasnt as complex when it came to neutral) and the excessive amount of characters locked behind annoying grind and robux hurt it. the characters are also extremely basic with little to no depth. heavens arena suffered from having too many changes to its combat in a short amount of time, which initially threw a lot of people off, and then transitioned into barely updating at all. it also constantly over-tunes its characters, potentially even more so than aba does, and keeps them overtuned for long periods of time. the combat is unique but also just really weird, like it encourages combo freedom, but all combos do the same dmg, so there's no point in doing actual "cool" combos. it also prevents any form of un-true combo, which further limits combo freedom, has bad hit-boxes, and has a weird control scheme. cartoon smackdown didn't have the best update schedule and just wasn't as polished as Aba. The only thing that made it stand out was it wasn't anime based, so u could have more variety with characters, but the characters themselves had extremely basic movesets. troublesome battlegrounds 2 was kind of like cartoon smackdown (in terms of its flaws), except its roster was even MORE limited than other anime games since it only focused on one anime. that couldve given it the ability to make some jojo-specific mechanics to make it more interesting, but the devs decided to make it by far the most boring battlegrounds game on this list (aside from maybe cartoon smackdown, its a toss up). axs suffered from updates taking too long and its roster being small, but i feel like there are two other major issues nobody talks about. the movesets werent really all that interesting, and were compiled of ur basic combo extenders, command grabs, projectiles, etc. sometimes a character will gain like an extra 32 bases and 26 modes, but the moveset in each base/mode is still just as boring (aba for a long time was like this, but the past like 13+ major updates have made characters a lot more interesting). the other main issue was that it was too slow paced. the evasive system, overall lower damage, animations on average being longer (especially those moded command grab cut-scenes), and chakra/chi to manage all contributed to the game just feeling really slow. matches would last like 1-3+ minutes longer than aba's on average, and it just really made it a slog to get through at times. some people genuinely liked this change in pace, but it seems most people didnt and wanted things to be faster paced, with suggestions like removing chakra/turning it into stocks instead of a bar. i believe all of these games werent really good, a few actually kind of bad, and that shows with their player counts. not only did they each have a slew of flaws added onto aba's normal flaws (such as bad balancing and glitches), they couldnt update quick enough to save themselves even somewhat (i feel like updating quickly matters more for roblox games than non roblox games since they have less replayability on average). eternal battlegrounds doesnt really look promising, especially since 1. its been delayed for like 3+ months or something, 2. it doesnt look like it has many characters, and 3. parry-based combat sounds like it would be hell in the main game. aba is honestly carrying the genre of "real" battleground games right now, especially with its consistent updates that add new interesting characters and a slew of quality of life additions like a tutorial. to any devs reading this, if ur trying to make a cash grab battlegrounds, go the fake battlegrounds route (like with games like tsb). u might only get a few thousand players, but it will be 100x more than whatever u would get making a real one.

​@@bacon9101 mob has like one potentially cool mechanic that got absolutely ruined by the restrictions put on it. besides that, all of his moves are basic s, projectiles, and command grabs. goku has a beam, 3 command grabs (meteor, dragon, and elbow), and an aoe gust of wind. thats not really unique or interesting. kaioken is just the same shit but flashier, and ssj is even more of the same shit but even more flashy (plus a counter). jotaro has a barrage, 2 command grabs (full-power and skull), and a projectile. in base its more of the same, except one of his command grabs is a counter and his time stop is a free stun. goku black has a beam, 2 command grabs (slicer and kick), and a projectile. the mode is more of the same (with one less command grab and one more projectile). i will admit, i am simplifying their movesets to some extent, u can have 2 moves that fit the same "category" be used for entirely different reasons; however, its hard to call these characters unique or interesting in any way, shape or form regardless of that fact. like i have shown u, a lot of these characters have a projectile and 2-3 command grabs, and although the projectiles have a little variety, the majority of the time the character has a close range combo extending command grab and one where they dash forward a little bit and probably dont extend. literally all of ur examples, aside from mob, have 2 command grabs that fit those specific descriptions. modes get a little more interesting, since sometimes one of those command grabs might be an ultimate or they might teleport or they might even lose a command grab entirely, but its still not that interesting. axs' characters can be satisfying to use, partially due to their long animations and a sense of impact u get from them, but a lot of the moves are reused concepts with different cool downs and damage numbers. they sound design and visuals are solid (at least if ur trying to watch a movie instead of actually fighting the opponent), but the actual moves arent all that unique.

Personally, I think AXS died because it wasn’t consistent enough. It was slow as hell and didn’t let people stay engaged. The rerelease was pretty hype and the sneak peaks helped keep my excitement up… and then it disappeared. I’m still holding out hope for this game because it has some genuine potential. More than anything, it NEEDS consistency to build a fanbase. Considering the work that goes into each character, that probably means bringing on more devs… and the opposite of that is happening. AXS is actually pretty solid and it felt pretty good after the return outside of the dbz roster being overly dominant balance wise. I just feel that the people who actually owned the game were just massively incompetent and really should never have had ownership in the first place. It sounds harsh but realistically, they had two extremely strong starts and STILL fumbled in the exact same way. I want to believe the game will return and truly succeed but realistically, they have given the community no reason to trust them after their mishandling of the game AND the community.

man I still don't know how so many people play ABA I tried it more than once And I can't get into it, its a nightmare to play for me. Personally I prefer heaven's arena, its much cleaner.
