The Reverend Wilbert Awdry's Railway Series books and their television adaption, Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends, have a longstanding reputation of maintaining railway realism. This also extends to the case of runaway trains. With many stories being based on real life events, some of which include runaway trains, these incidents are portrayed with professionalism, realism, and frantic, quick-thinking action. The Railway Series and Thomas & Friends doesn't dumb things down or make dangerous situations all warm and fuzzy just for kids. Dangerous situations in the books and TV show are grounded in reality, educating the viewer on what can happen in the real world. In this video I analyze a select few episodes from the classic era TV series, and mention some interesting points about the filming, editing, and writing, that make episodes with runaway trains so frantic and realistic feeling.
Some editing compromises had to be made to avoid copyright, so apologies for any odd or obstructive visuals or audio mixing at times.
