Bilao, a restaurant that opened at the height of the pandemic in Manhattan, was started by 3 Filipino nurses who worked at a nearby hospital. After working a night shift - nurses Jude Canela, Maricris Dinopol, and Joan Calanog left the hospital craving a taste of their homeland in the Philippines. Bilao serves up the ultimate Filipino comfort food such as Tocilog - a breakfast dish made up of garlic rice, fried eggs, tomatoes, and cured pork. With no local options to feed their craving - the 3 chose to open Bilao and in the process, feed the local community of healthcare and frontline workers.

Maybe transfering that thankfulness into a descent wage or better working conditions would be an even better option... And don't come me with "no politics"! It's disgusting how Governemnt and for profit healthcare systems worldwide are "thankful" for these people, but never ever would actually transfer that into action. I dont think "thankful" is the right feeling, anger is way more appropriate...

I've got a lot of respect for the Filipino nurses. I spent a lot of time in hospital here in the UK after becoming disabled and many of the nurses were Filipino. It astounded me to see how poorly many of them were treated, by patients AND other nursing staff. These people have travelled halfway around the world, to help others, and that's the thanks they get?! It's disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. To all nurses, Filipino or any others... Thank you. If it wasn't for you all, I doubt I'd be here today.

@asanezz1111
@asanezz1111 2 жыл бұрын
@@tempest3376 You really don't need to learn the language to get around in the Philippines. Most of the people usually (depending on the location) already know basic English to communicate, especially on tourist locations. But hey, more brownie points for trying to understand the language... the people will love it!
@tempest3376
@tempest3376 2 жыл бұрын
@@asanezz1111 I figured that’d be the case with the tourist areas. But I’d prefer a more “local” scene so I can really see how people there live, behave, eat, etc. Personally I’m just fascinated with other parts of the world and how they function, especially smaller countries. Thanks for the input!

#1 mistake foreigners make when eating Filipino food: they don't pair it with rice. Hence why they think it's too salty, because it lacks the balance of how you SHOULD eat it. Virtually every single Filipino dish MUST be eaten with rice. Only dishes that are eaten with rice are considered "meals", everything else are "snacks". The only exceptions are noodles and soups, and even that is not set in stone.

Here's a fun fact for you: Negritos, like other Australo-Melanesians are the human group genetically furthest away from Africans. 2. Almost all Filipinos have Negrito ancestry, in addition to the more dominant Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) ancestry. Didn't you notice that we're brown? 3. Sige nga. Magtagalog ka nga.
