How to: 10 Inch Off Road Lift Fabrication - Chevy K20 Diesel Cummins Swap Squarebody Ep. 2

Salvage to Savage

Күн бұрын

The diesel swapped Chevy Squarebody is back for one final installment as we finish up the 10" Off Road Design lift installment. If you watched the first episode where we got the rear portion of the lift installed, you know that even though these parts come as a kit from ORD, there is a ton of chopping, welding and fabrication needed to make these parts work. So there's a whole bunch of work to get done to get this truck leveled out and back on the road. We're wasting no time getting the front torn down to be able to get all the brackets fitted up to bolt in our massive King Shocks. We're measuring out our distance to get our bump stops welded in, then measuring in the opposite direction to find a good length for our limit straps. And that's just the tip of the ice burg! By the time the episode is over, this Cummins swapped Chevy is rolling down the road and looking ready for some even bigger tires!
Have any questions about this huge lift kit? Leave them in the comments! And make sure to subscribe because we have some major updates coming on our twin turbo LSX Chevelle, our Godzilla swapped Continental, and we even have a new Supercharged C10 project we're getting geared up to give y'all!

So Awesome!! S2S fabricators are amazing!! I’ve said it a couple times before, I would love to see their work and overcoming the challenges of doing a chop top. Not this vehicle, of course, but some of the others that get slammed to the floor. A chop top would make it look that much more slammed!! Would love to see that. S2S is the best!!

One thing I did with my square body crew cab steering box was drill out the threads on the box, and run 7/16 studs all the way through so it is held to the frame with the studs, nuts, lock washers on both sides, and not the steering box threads. I am guessing since a steering box frame reinforcement plate was welded to it there was also the ORD steering box support brackets. You guys are going to have the diff geometry better than factory. When I welded on a new leaf spring saddle onto my Dana-60 I did like you guys and used the right diff center section spring pad to square away the the left side spring pad, and I found that the factory was off by almost 7/16". One other suggestion is get a steering shaft from a 2000 Chevy Express van, in order to eliminate the rag joint on your square body. Most auto parts stores can get you one of those.

The tubes don't actually need to be parallel, the lines between the joint centers need to be parallel. The look can be a little confusing since it's the imaginary line that matters.

Love the builds - they just keep getting better and bigger! A general question, why can't the plasma cutter start on the edge? There must be a reason as there seems to be so much wasted material. Thanks again from Down Under 🇦🇺
@SalvagetoSavage
@SalvagetoSavage Жыл бұрын
We cut inward of the edge to make sure that there isn't any part of our design that gets left out because it ran out off the boundary of our material. That edge of the material also helps keep everything we're cutting in place. When we cut at the edge, we've found that the piece we're cutting moves or shifts and gives us less of a clean cut overall. It seems like there's a lot going to waste, but much of that material that you see left over usually gets cut off by and and bent up to be used for brackets and other small odds and ends!

It is a 1989, so it would actually be a V3500. 1988-1991 square-bodies (3rd gen trucks), after the introduction of the GMT400 (4th gen trucks), all became R/V designation and Chevrolet took on the GMC 1500, 2500, 3500, etc. Only Crewcabs, Cab and Chassis, Motorhomes, Suburbans, and Blazer/Jimmy SUVs continued on for those 4 years after 1987.

Obviously you guys are doing an awesome job, I don't even need to say it. Question though. Why do you tig weld everything? Is it just a pride thing? I don't think tig is any stronger when the correct settings and gas are used with mig. Especially if you can do spray arc transfer.
@SalvagetoSavage
@SalvagetoSavage 18 күн бұрын
We're using a lot of different materials and different thicknesses throughout the process of builds like this, so sometimes it's easy to just continue with the TIG that's already set up than to go and set up the MIG machine. Sometimes the TIG is out of necessity, sometimes it's just preference!
@rorikolson
@rorikolson 18 күн бұрын
@@SalvagetoSavage Thanks for the reply. I figured you were just showing off, since a lot of guys don't even know what settings or gas to use with mig, much less how to tig weld.

It's hard to calculate what the cost would be without seeing the truck we're working on beforehand. We can run down the hours that it took for this one, but it's a bit of a different beast because there was a ton of extra work that needed to be done off camera to make everything work seamlessly with the massive cummins that was already swapped out in this truck!

It's EXTREAMLY Refreshing not to hear a bunch of filler words as people talk. The more technical the conversation & person, the less Ahhhhh & Uhmmmms you hear. My girls wanted a topic for a oral report in school. Told my tomboys to go watch TV & count. They thought Dad flipped out... we never watched TV, told them to count the fillers & make note of the topic, type of person talking ect. Then after that every day they jumped in the truck with a number... 18, 27 lmao. How many fillers & pauses their teachers said that day. My goal was to help them become more aware while doing public speaking for queening. They were quick learners & saddly they picked up on my smartXss comments & jokes.
