This video is a basic maintenance video on this 2015 Chevy Malibu. We changed the front brake rotors, pads, and the rear pads. The only special tools you need is a GM brake piston tool to screw the piston back in the caliper on the rear. The other tool you need is patience. Typical GM, you have to remove twice as much of the car and they use uncommon metric tool sizes.

Rear pads fit tight to the knuckle. Suggest removing the caliper bracket and fitting the pads off car. Much easier. Plus gives you a better approach to cleaning the slider pins and the caliper bore holes. Get a proper wind back tool for the caliper instead of the cube. In my experience there is only 1 side of the cube that half works well on this vehicle.

One thing I found out was that an angle grinder wrench works really well on the back calipers

I've always said that engineers need to work on some of there designs so they can see that it's not as practical as they thought.. thank you for the video

Also when re-installing the rear caliper, be mindful of any rivit heads that might be in the way on the inner pad backs and adjust the caliper piston to align accordingly.

If you have the J60 code in your trunk, the smaller brake package, they should be the 296mm. To be certain, do what I did and take the rotors in to the parts store and match them up. Or measure them when you take them off. O’Reillys took a few times to pull the correct ones.

hey! please im trying to help my mom out for christmas. she has the malibu 2015 ltz which has the turbos in it; im assuming from what you said at 1:00, you were saying they are the bigger brakes out of the two (which is more info than i can be blessed with considering Chevy doesn’t disclose that “specific information” for some dumb reason when we called ), but do you know what brakes the bigger ones are? are you able to find that info somewhere and either reply with the copied text from the site/or reply w the size? i can’t seem to find them anywhere or any info on them 😩 it would mean a whole lot! and thank you for the tutorial! i subscribed to you

Look in the trunk. There should be a sticker somewhere that says either J60 or J61. The J61 has larger brakes; the turbo model. The front rotor size is 321mm I believe. The rear rotors should be vented. The non turbo cars’ rear rotors are NOT vented. Best case is to take them off and to a parts house. Have them match them. It took me three attempts for those guys to find the correct rotors.

What tools did you use

Basic hand tools for most of this job. You do need a brake caliper wind back tool. I got the cheap square one that sucks but it does the job. If you do this often, I recommend getting a decent one.

On my 2016 Malibu. you have to use a caliper tool to depress the piston. There's always something else you have to spend money on lol

Needless to say, I was very annoyed when I realized I needed that stupid tool.

only on the rear you will have to wind the piston back. This is for a nice fit and e break adjustment
