As a professional industrial designer for 14 years, I say you've done an excellent job with the car, it really looks great! I've been 3D modeling nearly full time for most of that time, mostly in SolidWorks and Rhino, and agree with your statements. I do surface model quite complex aerodynamic parts in SolidWorks, but parametric modeling software is definitely a hindrance to being in a creative flow. However, what's even faster than poly modeling is doing a sketch of what you want your design to look like. Anyway, all of these skills take time to master, so it's only going to be possible for the dedicated few.

In professional design studios people will follow the workflow of creative surfacing (Blender/Alias based on sketches) - 3d modeling (Alias, Class A) - Final part in CAD software (Catia, Siemens,...). CAD allows you to have perfect reflections and surfacing that you won't be able to achieve with poligonal software but if you are really good with those you can achieve pretty good results. I'm amazed but how the bumper looks, amazing that you managed to do everything in Maya. I've worked on bodykits before just in the first stage and using Blender so I know the amount of work that goes behind this. Infill most certainly does add strength that has been proven. However if you don't need much then of course don't bother. my biggest question is why you didn't use say 10% rectilinear instead of 5% gyroid if that's the case because rectilinear has the fastest print speed? Anyway. Give it a shot it should speed up the printing and give same results. 👍
@rob_over_90003 ай бұрын
Going to call false on infill not affecting strength. It absolutely does, though strength on a per kg basis is a little more useful of a measurement. Many channels have done these tests in a quantitative setting and I do recommend checking them out.

ABS isn't good in the sun. It becomes brittle after a short amount of time. ASA is a better option with similar properties. And saying that infil doesn't add strength isn't necessarily true. I've done some extensive testing using MTS Systems' load frames when I was doing mechanical design projects in school. Infil has a positive affet on shear strength and compression strength, but does little to nothing for tensile strength. The TYPE of infil used also makes a big difference.

Im looking at getting a 3d printer at some point by the end of the year to 3d print some parts for my own car. Im not going any major body panels, mainly just a spacer for the rear spoiler(which will lift it up by 5/8in, which does give the look im after), a replacement center dash speaker grill, and a adapter plate for my rear speakers to fit a tweeter into the bigger mid range speaker space. The OEM speakers on the rear originally used a 6x9 woofer for producing sub frequencies, along with something like a 2in mid bass driver. I had replaced these original speakers with aftermarket component speakers, and just need to fabricate a adapter for the tweeter instead of trying to use silicone, as silicone doesnt take the heat of the sun on the rear deck. I have already designed the interior parts but cant say for sure everything will fit as I want till after i can print. It will mainly be trial and error for me.

I like to use fiberglass filler or fiberglass resin/cloth on the backside of the prints to strengthen them. Because we don't care what the back looks like and it won't change the shape of the front. I print the parts thin for this purpose, not sure if it will help if you have a part with infill.. and I don't know if just resin by itself is going to strengthen the part that much. If at all possible, I print a negative of the part and make the final part out of fiberglass.
