How to access the 147.425 Free Speech Repeater via Zello

how would someone set this up for a local channel? for example ch1 on a UV-5R to zello? how do u have a RPT transmitting to zello? I'm very interested lol

We use a "R1 2020" Zello interface. They're available on ebay, and basically they interface with the Zello application running on a computer and give you PTT, COS, audio in, and audio out all in one device. We wired this into my repeater controller for a seamless interface. So you could just get one of those boxes and wire up a headset plug to it for a UV-5R. Would be easy enough. But I'd caution against using a handheld for the interface like that because we frequently run for hours at a time and any handheld being used like that will overheat very quickly. The better option would be to build a simple Allstar node and wire it into a mobile radio set for low power. Allstar interface building guides are all over KZbin and the internet so you should be able to find the info you need. A barebones node would require a raspberrypi, a cheap USB sound card, some simple modification of the soundcard, and a radio to connect it all to. Using allstar is definitely easier and more reliable than using the Zello software. Zello really only shines when using a smartphone to talk to and hear the repeater.
