Solution to get super high gloss on a clear coat that you applied yourself or on a clear coat strongly damaged. The gloss is obtained by wet sanding then polishing. A wax is then applied to protect the varnish.

For a drive-way job and not being fully prepped for this. I'm pretty happy with your results. Suggestion for those who try this, use a smaller sanding pad to help get more results and control around the corner and side of each panel and make sure to refine the sanding by going up to 3000 grit or 4000 grit before going to the next stage of cut polish.

Nice video. I’d absolutely start with nothing rougher than 1,000 grit, though. If anyone is nervous about polishing (maybe it’s your first time and you don’t want to burn through the finish), sanding up to 5,000 grit before polishing helps, and never wipe the panel down immediately after you polish. Give the clear a second to reset.

Looks much better but be sure to never wax fresh clear-coat and only use a microfiber towel to buff. I would definitely keep the speeds lower on that DA machine. Clear from a can will likely be very thin and if it wasn't baked/cured at mid-high temps, it is fairly weak so you will very quickly and easily burn right through it. Paint from the factory is baked at temps between 250-400F because the parts are OFF the car. Even a professional body-shop can't match those temps if the part is still on the car because other parts can't take high heat exposure (tires, electronics, etc.) That is why factory paint is usually superior.

I understand that some clear coats are trash specially if you spray out of a can. But if your going to spray out of a can atlease use a 2k clear coat. You gotta let the clear cure for about a week then you can start to wet sand with a 1500 grit. Using a sponge as a pad for your sand block. Then use 2000 grit finally use a 2500 grit. Then you can use a compound cutting from meguiars by using a buffer/polisher. Then use polish, wax, and finish wax.

End result il admit was spot on but the process was long winded. Realistically that same gloss can be achieved by 1500, 2000 (or 3m trizact 3000 disc is my choice) then compound then buff. The meguires paint correction shouldn't be needed and never wax fresh clear coat for the first 4 weeks after painting as you risk locking solvents in under the wax since they can't escape. This can destroy your paint as the clear gasses out solvents for up to 4 weeks. Cheers

I have managed to compile all the useful info I have gleaned from the comments of various vids on bodywork: Apply filler to any cracks etc in item. Sand item with 400 sandpaper. Spray some primer over item. 3 coats. Light coat. Wait 20 - 30 mins then another heavier coat, 30 mins wait then final coat. Wet sand with 600 wet and dry to ensure smooth finish pre painting. Let dry. Spray the item. 3 coats. Light coat. Wait 20 - 30 mins then another heavier coat, 30 mins wait then final coat. If desired, wet sand with 800 preferably by hand with sanding block and let dry. Apply clearcoat - preferably 2K. Minimum 3 coats. Not too light. Not too heavy. Allow ample time to dry (at least 24 hours) Wet sand the clearcoat with 2000/2500/3000/5000 by hand with sanding block (or just 3000 and 5000 if finish is already nice and smooth.) Be gentle. Rub with rubbing compound preferably with a machine but by hand if necessary. Be gentle. Buff off. Then apply a polish preferably with a machine. Buff. Wait a few weeks before applying wax to give the clearcoat time to release all chemicals. Wet sand eyeballs with 9000 grit sanding block so you can see clearer. When someone tells you you did something wrong, dry sand their head with 1 grit paper aka a rock.

This radical sanding might work on black, white, or basic solids, red, yellow or blue. But on a mixed color, especially a silver or gold hue, there is a very likely chance you will get a highlighted edge which is impossible to acceptably repair without repainting the area edge to edge. No need to go with 800. Just go with 1500/2000/3000 Also you are to fast with the machine. It doesn’t help the compound and generate enough heat to help the clear spread through the scratches.. spend more time with machine going side to side slower and overlap slightly and you will get better results. Instead of going at it like bull in a china shop :)

This is a great video ... Having to lightly sand and buff with compound is actually pretty easy . Once this is done it is permanent . Other than normal wear and test on paint that just happens over time

Yes the paint needs at least 3 to 6 weeks to cure. If the car is always in shade or in a garage it would take longer to cure than if it were exposed to sun everyday

Thanks. Couple of questions: How long do you allow the color coats to dry before coats of your Clears? Rustoleum company specialists say to wait only 10 to 15 minutes between each coat of any product...but their canned sprays do NOT advise this. It's very annoying. 2. Have you tested or used Rustoleum's Universal Gloss Clear Hammered spray by chance? I recently sprayed 3 car body panels with Rustoleum Navy Blue Gloss Enamel (2 coats over 1-coat Gloss Blue paint+primer) and let dry for 40 minutes from last coat. Then I applied the Clear Enamel. First coat was very light, No blistering. Waited 30 minutes, 2nd coat, a little wrinkle in 4 places. Waited 9 hours, 3rd coat...it got worse! 4th coat 30 minutes later...even worse. 😆 Ruined my perfect rattle can spray job...it had zero runs or drips. Now I will have to wet sand all 3 car panels and apply something else to cover up the fail. I'm curious if the Clear Hammered product would help cover this and some body defects by reflecting light differently, as it does. If so, I'd use it on the whole car, as it has little chips and gouges here and there...27 year old work car. I called the company, they said ALL layers of paint must be applied within 1 hour from start time, or the user must wait 48+ hours to start the 1 hour application window again. Their cans don't describe the 1 hour criteria like their agents do though. Bad written directions. Thanks again. Feel free anybody to chime in.

There are many factors involved in calculating drying times. However, generally speaking off years of experience, rustoleom is my worst nightmare. The only times I've ever experienced similar problems to the one you mention was when using rust-oleum. As for the hammered product, your assumption is correct. It definitely will assist you in hiding the imperfections you mentioned. Good luck.

If it's rattle can spray it will tell you on the directions the curing time. If it's a paint booth sprayed clear wait 30-60 days before sanding for best results. But can be done sooner just to improve a severe orange peel.

I tried clear coat today on my entire hood, but the weather was too hot, and the clear coat dried too fast, giving me a sandy finish. I could get a smooth finish only in spots. I'd appreciate help from other viewers. Should I sand with 800 first, or do you recommend another grit?

I seen 1000 recommended in a video and one guy up there said start less abrasive then go stronger as you won't scuff up the finish as easy maybe your case the 800 WOULD be beneficial I'd say start 1000 then go to 800 if you think you need it
