I'd like to add that once you do create a passion, you DO NOT have to build a career doing it. It's absolutely okay to work a regular day job to fund your passions in your free time, and for some people it's better. I've worked several jobs doing things I was very passionate about, and the constant grind to improve and produce at someone elses pace instead of my own completely bled me dry of my love for those activities. Remember to always follow your path FOR YOU first.

Another piece of advice I have is that when you do realize you are passionate about something, it doesn't mean you have to start capitalizing on it or that you have to be the very best. This can lead to feeling drained, trying to people please, unhealthy comparisons or even losing your passion! We live in a society that values achievements more than inner peace. As a creative person I've many times been encouraged to drop everything else and pursue music. I am young and figuring everything out and I'm very passionate about science and biology too which is what I'm studying in school. It's ok to pursue multiple things and focus on daily life :)

I'm right there with you. I have a lot of interests, but there really hasn't been one in my adult life that felt like my one passion. Which also made it hard for me to make a decision about what career to transition into after being very unhappy in my current one for years. As I thought more about passion I realized that there doesn't have a to be one thing (it's certainly fine if there is only one thing though). Why can't I have several passions? Or better yet, why do I need to define it as a passion at all? I have lots of things I enjoy doing. Does the fact that I don't define them as my passion reduce the pleasure I get out of doing them? No at all. I finally just made a list a couple of years ago and decided to choose something from it and start working toward it. And I'm getting close to being ready to transition to a new career and feeling really good. Is this thing my passion? No. Do I enjoy it? Usually :) But as I get better at it, I enjoy it more. Ultimately, I may decide to transition my career again later on down the road. But for now, I'm feeling better about the direction I'm going. And I think that has a lot more to do with just taking some action than the specific thing I picked. Cheers and good luck on your journey. You can do this!

Something that helped me with the whole 'finding your passion' thing, was seeing a video where the creator talked about doing things that energise & excite you. You can work hard at a project/hobby/thingy & feel tired due to long hours or intense bouts of focus. But if it's leaving you feeling *drained* that's a sign that maybe it's not for you.

I'm doing some research about this. So far i have found out i do things that cost focus and energy but i feal good about them or afterwards. Is this the secret to what gives you energy? @@davek1728 just don't get caught up in the trap of thinking 'this benefits others so it's what I should be doing'. @megg103 жыл бұрын
I totally understand your struggle. Growing up, i was told I was a “gifted kid”, so things were expected to come easy to me. Fast forward a few years and I can’t cope with failure and if I’m not good at something instantly, I drop it. Unfortunately, at least in my personal experience, there aren’t any special “tricks” that can make it easier. The only cure to inaction is action. You could spend your whole life *thinking* about doing something, but never actually do it. You don’t want to get trapped in that cycle. Everyone has to be bad at something before they can be good at it. You can’t avoid failure, it’s a part of life that everyone has to go through, and there’s no shame in it. One quote that’s helped me is this quote from the show Bojack Horseman “It gets easier. Everyday it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it everyday. i don't know if this is helpful, but in case it is: not everything needs to be a 9-5, lots of people work better other ways. also, if you ever played a video game you probably improved over time - at several points in what is now one of my favourite games, i very nearly gave up because the learning curve felt IMPOSSIBLE. When someone more experienced than i watched how i was getting stuck and gave me some guidance it was extremely frustrating, but seemed a bit more doable. i still haven't beaten the final boss, but i probably will one day. what i'm trying to say is: stuff's harder when you're not used to it, most of us need help along the way & fear of failure / anxiety are sometimes due to [understandable but inaccurate] belief that the only way is mainstream and we have to contort ourselves to fit into existing ways, rather than adjusting them to fit more people or creating new ones.

Not in a way a master teach a noob, with too far of a _gap_ between them-literally and metaphorically. You are a different person-have gone through different trials and errors and successes, therefore you have something to say to the ones whom are still struggling to be where you are now-yet at the same time you are just like us, somehow. And the way you connect yourself to us is just so genuine and chill and fun and it's a really good point no master in the highest mountains could ever achieve. And therefore makes your messages and empathy to reach more hearts, more deeply. God bless you, my dude. You have a nice vibe - you don't give off the stereotypical intense unattainable self-help guru feel that a lot of others do - you come off as just a chill, relatable dude who's been through what we're going through and is just sharing what worked for him. I find your videos both comforting in how laidback and non-judgemental they feel, yet also practical & useful; subbed.

"Indecision is not a vantage point from which you can assess your options." Damn, speaking the truth. I've been indecisive on a variety of topics. This is deeply true, and a lesson I seem to be learning over and over again. Thank you for putting that into words.

Inaction was literally the struggle of my life right now.. So much needed to be done that I just stopped… Im not naturally drawn to creating stufff… I love to invent and imagine stuff but putting it into action, making real and tangible.. that’s not something I’m good at yet.. which just means, there’s room for improvemen. Gotta actively start working now. Why? I dunno..just do it.. try it out.. Thank you for everything you’ve done on this channel..you like actually inspire me and that is not something that someone can do easily

love your quirky takes. I have followed this selection process most of my life, because I never fully went to college and was pretty much working to make money in every area of my life out of highschool. I've tried everything from making ghillie suits, collecting and selling wool blankets, professional paintball player, graphic designer, landscaper, farmer, mycologist, learning medical hydroponics, operating a tshirt business, I stuck my toe in the three main construction categories, electrical, plumbing, carpentry. In the end I am a very well rounded individual, and am very adaptive because of it. This spot does make me feel inadequate at times that really there is so much content and information around, and I always pick up heavily when someone states their education background and the university they attended. For me though I really have nothing but my fake it until you make it enthusiasm and salesman tactics to keep everything in short concessions so such topics never come into light, though they always haunt me as an insecurity. My ultimate goal was to become a garden educator, so now I am focusing on relearning digital art so I may tell visual stories to help some understand of how to produce their own food. Without every aspect of knowledge i've gained, I would not fundamentally understand the process of taking building materials or agriculture by-product and creating very consistent systems that have a level of observational artistry which skims the surface of critical failure and efficient design. This is what I believe the world needs, a better understanding of localized food production that utilizes its small scale as a means of having low risk to trial and maximize efficient designs. I am still a ways off, but there is so much to learn, that I am always engaged and the process of learning is what actually drives me, but I have to focus on action, as the hoarding of knowledge is sometimes a dead end of mere irrelevant data.

I've started journaling after watching one of your previous vids. It's so new to me, it's going very shaky. This topic of passion is literally something that I journaled about today. Being stuck doing nothing because I fear doing something. I'll definitely try this and see where it leads me.

I discovered this video when I took a career break to access the way forward and it was intimidating. Every path seemed good and as i even began to pick on the feedback loop of fear would force me to go back to square one. This advice of action (any Action) leading to making better decisions is absolutely amazing. Right now, I am starting again and am on a path again and I can feel progress. The biggest takeaway from this video was "There are only two options in life, starting and stopping" Thank you mate

I’ve watched loads of videos with similar titles and I’ve never actually felt better after watching one before. Thank you so much! I’ve spent the last five years since finishing school going back and forth between trying out different jobs, courses and berating myself for still not knowing what I wanting to do and for quitting everything I started. This totally changed my perspective.

here is an easy method for picking, if you have a fear of picking, but also have a list to pick from: go with whats at the top, if it doesn't work, cross it out and go with the next one down, repeat till one does, and if you are worried that that may not be the best one on the list, repeat till the list is depleted, then repeat the ones that worked to rank them. and if you still don't know, alternate them until you do.

"Indecision is not a vantage point from which you can assess your options." A sailboat tiller can be jogged back and forth, but until the sails are up and it's moving forward, the tiller is pretty much useless. That's our brain when it's indecisive.

in my last therapy section i realized that what was holding me back was depression's inertia. it's really frustrating because i'd get to the part where i'd have to do something and IT'S SO HARD. but now that i connected it to movement it makes it more clear. and it's not just about literal movement (like getting out of the bed after waking up), it's also feeling bad and stuck but clicking on this video anyways and getting a new perspective of things. i moved from the starting point. so thank you! i never really leave comments but decided to make this move (hehe). your videos have helped me a lot and little by little i'm tweaking and polishing my systems to live feeling a bit lighter. to everyone that feel stuck, i hope you all find your movements and build a version of yourselves that you're proud of. ❤

I just started beauty school at Aveda Institute and their newest slogan is "Passion into Purpose". It's beautiful and inspiring. And it's funny how all the points you're making tear that apart and simultaneously build it back up :) I love watching your videos, especially when I'm feeling sad and stuck, artistically. I can watch all the tutorials I want... But nothing really makes me feel validated and ready to create like your videos, even just watching you draw "x thing in 9 styles".

"Passion is no inherently a good thing, the word is related with suffer" Thanks!! I love art and I love drawing, but exactly for that feelings I think I couldn't work happily as an artist. A job requires some detachment, some coldness, and is really difficult/painful/almost impossible to relate that things with my creations. I still don't know if I will get a common job and just making art on my free time, but honestly that sounds better than drawing most of the time, but been deeply sad, unsatisfied and probably with insomnia lol (also winning less money, eating wrong stuff and so on)

This is an amazing video. After college, I was in a cycle of inaction, where I didn't do anything and I didn't build anything because I wasn't doing anything. I realized later that any action is better than inaction. Hearing you eloquently express these ideas has given me so much to think about in terms of my current decisions.

"Picking any direction is the right direction." Love this. Great video! I love your lighthearted and friendly demeanor. This is one of the best breakdowns on following your passion that I've seen. I landed on a similar mindset after spending a few years just trying to "figure out my one passion". But finally realized that, like everyone, I'm multifaceted, and there really isn't just one thing. I adopted more of an approach like you mention in the video of just picking something that seems interesting to me and started working toward it and see where it leads. Fast forward a few months and I'm getting close to graduating and starting the job search in a new career. And that feels SO much better than just taking no action. Cheers.

I gave a speech in High School about how it is not just about your passion. Sometimes the industry is dying, and a little less passion for a lot more money is a calculated move. Of course, I would not choose something that I despise either.

By watching this video I discovered that I already have a lot of thing I want to do, but never tried. I also discovered that I'm scared of both failure and taking action. I'll be 28 years old in September, and I've wanted to write a book, be good at guitar and ukulele, and good at drawing, since at least high school, maybe even younger. I have began somewhat, but never committed for more than two days. I already know music is part of my life and me, so what am I scared of? The drawing is more difficult, but that's probably me being hard on myself. Also, I do like making up stories 😅 I also finished the movie Soul an hour ago (I really do recommend it), and my thought prosess about "what have I accomplished" and "am I enjoying life" started ... Found this video, and yes. I just sit on my but waiting for my passion to come flying out of nowhere 😅Tomorrow I will commit at least five minutes of my time learning something on the guitar 🤩 Thank you for making this video ✨

If you are staring at a blank piece of paper and can’t think of a single thing that interests you, start paying attention to little things that make you pause and maybe even smile a little. I’m talking about things you normally don’t even count as “an interest”😅. It could be as small as certain colors or shapes. You may find a pattern or you might just learn more about yourself. If nothing else you’ll start to feel gratitude for these small things. Follow them, you never know where these “hints” may take you. Side note: I think this is why the Cub Scouts have kids earning badges for things they don’t really care much about. It’s all about being exposed to as many things as possible just in case you stumble onto something you might develop into a passion.

This is great advice! Just pick one thing and start… I’ve found this works in so many areas of my life… and also just by starting and opening new doors, I’ve come across other things I’ve developed an interest and passion for that I would’ve never considered before. Like having a KZbin channel (now monetised), for example. You just have no idea what opportunities life puts in front of you until you take that first step in any direction and be open to possibilities. Thanks for sharing, love your way of storytelling and that’s the next thing I’m learning now! 🙌❤️🙌

Oldie but a goldie. Thought I'd comment here since it's probably from around the time I started watching your videos. Really appreciate them. I've been in accounting for most of my 20s, despite having a safety net and support network who would encourage me to take more risks, tap into my artistic/entrepreneurial side, I never did. Last year I did quit my job with no back up because I was just about burned out. I took six months off, went through a dark but quick phase that was necessary, and started looking forward. Now I'm 30, sought help and am now working with a great coach, got your book for Christmas since my partner new I watched your videos, and I'll be becoming a dad later this year - just a few months after you it would seem. I always thought I had to take risks before becoming a parent when you have responsibilities, but now I am at a stage where I can't imagine being the kind of example for my kid who doesn't follow his 'passions' (took me a long time to work through what that means, despite your video ;) ). Now I'm at a stage where I've got so many ideas about what I can realistically work towards, things that I would enjoy doing and give me some sense of purpose I never had in accounting. Best of luck with the baby, I am sure you and Felicity will be great parents in the best imperfect way possible. Cheers!

I love this video! Thank you! Apparently, I've been doing "passion trials" all my life. I thought I was just being indecisive and wasting my time by starting and stopping different interests I've had. I've gone from photography, to painting, to baking, and now I'm into gardening. I thought I was a failure because cousins who are much younger than me have stuck to one area and have a career in them whereas I have been going from one field to another.

I feel you, I get a new hobby every year, and at this point I'm good at a lot of things, but I always felt bad that none of them ever "stuck". But then again, the only reason I ever wanted something to stick was so I could make money in a way that didn't suck. If I didn't have to worry about money, I literally wouldn't care, and doing one thing for your whole life sounds awful. Why go to a buffet and only eat 1 thing? So anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I don't even want my passions/hobbies to turn into a job, what I really want are a couple rich boyfriends 😂
