It's not about the width of the grip. I often do close grip supinated pull down and feel my lats as the main mover. The key is to use your hands as hooks, loosen the grip a bit and feel ur lats, pulling your elbows.
@SmoothHandle10 ай бұрын
You go that wide, I promise you that you’ll be feeling more upper back/traps. Keeping elbows close to torso will bias lats far more effectively.

Just speaking from personal experience since I believe certain exercises work better for some than others. I like doing pulldowns with slightly outside shoulder width grip and just focus on that teres muscle, and target lats with cable pull overs and single arm cable rows because very wide pulldowns just never really felt good. At the end of the day, just do what works for you :D

I have bigger lats than hebdoes, and while I might just be genetically predisposed, I tend to focus more on the stretch. Doing full ROM is a must. For really good mind muscle connection, do single armed lat pulldowns and do a slight side crunch at the peak of the contraction.
@Swanson-hs5df9 ай бұрын

@kaspy402010 ай бұрын
Actually it is proven that wide of the grip doesnt change ur lat engagement and it is more like personal choice (i mean normal wide grip is the best, but the difference is so small that u should choose ur own wide). I also found out that lots of pros doing it with elbows out side says it hits more mid back other than lats. Same with lower lats i heard that the best way to hit it is with pulldowns but with reverse grip due to better shoulder position. These are small differences but worth mentioning
@user-mt7jv4kz5p10 ай бұрын
If I am not mistaken, it actually cuts off part of your ROM, as lats are fully contracted in the bottom point where the elbows are tucked to your body, and the wider you grip the further your elbows will be from that point

I understand everyone is different, but I tend to feel my lats wayyyy more if I use a just wider then shoulders grip position and also use a neutral grip bar, I really focus on the eccentric part of the movement, like your putting the brakes on after the pull and stretch the lat on a real controlled and slow eccentric. I think wider grip=wider lats is a big misconception in the bodybuilding scene.

pulling that wide has been shown to not increase any lat activation but more so puts yourself at a mechanical disadvantage by limiting the range of motion and forcing your primary movers to be biceps and small teres muscles near the shoulder blades. Not the big lats

@soots-stayingoutofthespotl54954 ай бұрын
Well, it's true that an elbows-behind-torso form works the forearms somewhat instead of the back, but since I started doing a stricter, more upright form last year (elbows and hands stacked), my forearms have got weaker and look visibly smaller to me. And I haven't really progressed with my back either. In other words, optimum form may not be the best idea overall, so I'm going to start mixing it up this year.
@mikahoolwerff35634 ай бұрын
@@soots-stayingoutofthespotl5495 just use straps on back movements so your forearms dont limit you. And then add an actual forearms exercise somewhere.

To be fair, hitting your lats properly on this exercise isn’t as straightforward as may seem. If you can’t do pull ups and your Gym also has an assisted pull up machine I would highly recommend you incorporate that into your routine as well as the pull down. At least until you can do proper pull ups. However for the lat pulldown theres couple of cues I use, I keep my thumbs off the bar, I also imagine I’m trying get the points of my elbows to touch behind my back at the bottom of the movement and of course the biggest and most effective cue for most back exercises is to think of your hands as hooks.
