So Sanderson pretty much set his way on what they look like. SA is probably one of the few big Fantasy series that has such a diverse mix of races. It feels so natural why change it, I'm sure there are a lot of Asian Actors who can fit the bill, even if we look outside Hollywood. If they had to cast Henry Cavill, then they'll have to cast more white people for Alethi roles otherwise it won't make sense. Like SA won't be one of the biggest series or movies where they can naturally cast POC actors, because the original source material allows and people won't make huge fuss about it being gender swapped or race swapped

I believe Brandon Sanderson has said on his podcast that he is skeptical of an animated adaptation of his works. He argues it isolates some of the potential viewer demographics, such as the more elderly, and he said he wouldn't want to do that because he remembered getting his mother to watch Lord of the Rings and she was obsessed with Gollem, even though she didn't much care for the larger fantastical elements, and had the LotR been an animated adaptation, all those individuals who found something they liked would never have given it a chance simple based on the fact it's animated. He also said, after the Amazon Wheel of Time adaptation, that he doesn't think 8, or even 10, episodes is sufficient to tell a story as long as Storm Light, so the season would have to be 12-14 episodes that are roughly an hour long per season.
@davosseewert70233 ай бұрын
That's prabably true. But what if there were a high budget Mistborn era 1 liefe-action series and a Warbreaker movie before the Stormlight animation? They would advertise each other by connections, post-credit scenes and of course the same actor for Hoid. That would collect far more potential viewers, but also prevent that the Stormlight series is halfway cancelled or never made because it is too long or expensive. Also, the spren are something I only can imagine animated. And different adaptation styles would just fit to the diversity of the cosmere. And if there will ever be an adaptation, they probably would start with Mistborn anyway.

I feel like a good way to photograph the environment of Roshar would be aiming for a naturalistic, almost documentarian aesthetic. Handheld (not shaky) shots, and have the world look like a real place (meaning as much on location as humanly possible). Like. Picture a shallow focus shot of glowing spheres in a woven net, the water of a past highstorm dripping off of them. A group of windspren being filmed like a flock of birds that the cameraman is trying to follow. Also if it were me I’d want to shoot it on 35mm to give it a more textured look but that’d be expensive.

calling a Storm Light adaptation “the Next Game of Thrones” has a lot of issues. Storm Light is just a completely different beast. The enjoyment of the story is very different from the reasons why GoT fans like their content. The closest I can compare the difference is HotD to GoT. They are built by writers with different fundamentals. Storm Light can have a major cultural impact, but as soon as people start saying “it’s the next GoT” the show is going to take a big hit in the ratings. Hopefully, it balances out in the end. It’ll just take the audience a moment to filter its audience and expectations.

I think one of the biggest adaptation hurdles rears its head as soon as you glimpse past the first book: the parsh/listeners/singers becoming an active part of the plot. I'm not talking costumes, I'm referring to the single most important part of their culture and communication: the Rhythms speaking to rhythms, constant humming and singing to rhythms. adapting the rhythms to any kind of visual medium - either animated or live action - carries a *lot* of clarity and tonal issues. how do you have actors *speak* to rhythms in a way that doesn't come across as weird sing-song? the nuances of the different rhythms and what they represent is hugely important for a large swath of characters, but how do you show which rhythms are which without explicitly labelling them on screen? a stylized animation production can maybe just do that, but there's also the aspects of rhythm and tone that are described in the books that have no actual physical analog or are otherwise impossible to recreate one might say that these are flavor details that you can get away with simply not including in the show. that person would be incorrect. once you get far enough along in the series, you know how the world of roshar turns on tones and rhythms. to exclude them cripples key plot elements and strips the cultural identity of one of your most important groups, but to include them is a logistical and storytelling nightmare btw, your casting caused me physical pain, good job

Live action is the way to go. Some of the action sequences would rule animated, but people are purely thinking of those action scenes. And lets be so for real. The Way of Kings has like... a handful of action sequences. Not enough compared to something like Arcane. We remember the big action set pieces but think back on how much of the series is just people talking. I would also love a series that would be taken seriously lol. I love animation but a lot of people look at animation and just fully ignore it. Citation: Every relative I have over the age of 30. Tbh, the hardest part I can see for a live action Stormlight adaptation isnt the Spren. I agree that really shouldn't be that hard. Or the landscape. Even more than referenced, I remember a video on his YT where he answered that he has already done some for fun location scouting in Utah for the Shattered Plains. I honestly think its the shardblades. A majority of them are these hulking 6 foot tall swords that weigh nothing. (fun fact, the inspo for that is Sanderson seeing big dumb anime/fantasy swords and trying to find a worldbuilding justification to make them functional weapons.) I think an honest challenge would be to give Dalinar, or Adolin their shardblade and have them fight in a way that doesnt look absolutely goofy af. Thats the one advantage to animation. You just dont have that issue in that format. For a real human though? Gotta deal with the fact giving a giant dumb prop sword is gonna look like a giant dumb prop sword unless a lot of hard work is done.

The two biggest issues that people are going to have are budget and casting. You pulled the Spren bit from the same conversation about budget that they were having on the same stream so I’m shocked you didn’t include it but Brandon said that the budgets he was being offered at the time made him perfectly content that the Roshar he envisioned could be brought to Live Action. That’s issue one. Issue two would be casting. Well not so much the casting in and of itself so much as the reaction of people one way or another. There are two different ways to cast this and both will get a negative reaction. You could cast the way you SHOULD cast which is cast based on Merit. The best Actor for the role and who embodies the character the best gets the job, period, full stop. This would ensure the quality of the show and would satisfy the portion of the fan base who will actually watch the show, thus making money for whatever network/service it’s on and having a better chance to keep going into the later Stormlight books but you would get the Woke Mob, who’s proven they won’t support things even when they bitch and moan about them, all in a tizzy. The second way you could cast, which seems to be the most prevalent these days, would be to cast in a way to pander to the Woke Mob. This is the easiest way to alienate the fan base who would keep the project alive and is thus NOT what should happen. Knowing the way Hollywood has been working lately and that it isn’t going to change anytime soon Brandon would be better off holding out until Hollywood gives him an ironclad contract giving him full final say on absolutely everything or until he makes enough money that he can produce it on his own… Edit- as far as Fan Casting goes the only thing I care about is that the Major Stormlight characters be unknowns. Characters that make appearances in multiple Series like Hoid can be big stars but I want the characters where this is their Main Story in the Cosmere to be unknown Actors…
@AClockworkWizard3 ай бұрын
It's funny how you people go berserk when "the Woke Mob" dares change something about a character's appearance in an adaptation, but if the character's are already described as non-European then changing them is just "casting based on merit".

@@AClockworkWizard you took the wrong thing away from that particular section of the post. Merit means merit. A few thoughts here. First, the VFX cost is still prohibitive according to traditional techniques. However, there's an emerging new VFX method based on AI that could make it possible. This would involve training AI models to create the environment, spren, etc for Roshar then compositing them, instead of linear cost per minute. This does likely mean Volume-like production. Second, it seems Brandon is willing to compromise on structure to a large degree, which means the story could be released in a different order than presented in the books. What if the first six episodes were JUST Kaladin's story from slave pen to saving Dalinar? "Season 2" could then be just Shallan and Jasnah from Kanbranth to "boots". These installments would be cheaper and could even be produced in parallel. Season 3 would be Eshonai and Venli ending with Szeth. Keeping sets, actors, and such contained will drastically keep costs down, especially upfront costs. One final concession on Spren is that in the books it's very unclear how much spren can be seen. If license is taken to make it exceptional instead of commonplace, then a lot of cost could be saved. Even Sly could be mostly narrative voiceover for nearly all of season 1.

I would love Henry Cavill as Dalinar. I don't think they need to always be Asian

Too bad you don’t know how to pronounce most of the names of the characters in the Stormlight Archive. Henry Cavill could be ZA’EL

The way things are now you mifht see Kevin heart as dalinar even thought the alethi pwople don't look like that. If mr sanderson wants an adaption done he must abide by the DEI polices of Hollywood, Lift will become a strong 20 something lesbian African American birthing person who needs no man. It's all so sad. I think an animation would be better but just like that new LoTR rohiirm show it would just be girl boss this girl boss that. Let just care about all the women.
