I have received several requests to research a possible options how to have an AC power outlet from the Volkswagen e-up (It should be the same with Seat Mii electric or Skoda Citigo iv). Here I have managed to pull 1.3 kWh from the car DC-DC step down converter that lowers the high voltage battery to 12V. The fuse is rated at 250A so I think it is saver to pull 130A from the converter in order to create a 1.5kWh outlet, which I can use for various things.
Here it is the inverter I am recommending to use if you would like to have an AC power in your electric vehicle: Pure sine wave inverter 1500 3000W - amzn.to/3arbBBH
Here are the list of parts used in this video:
1. Pure sine wave inverter 2500 5000W - amzn.to/2NJ6hjl
2. LCD Digital Voltmeter Ampmeter DC 0-90V 0-100A Hall Sensor - amzn.to/2tqnDL7
3. Clamp Meter - amzn.to/2Rztxl2

Yeah, the next step is charging an e-Up with another e-Up! Nice video as well, thanks Tedo!

@@tedonash2681 I am thinking of purchasing the 1500 watt inverter but ive seen videos with similar inverter that has problems with running fine electronics such as laptop etc because of high distorsion it acts more like a modified sin wave inverter. Have you tested your inverter with a laptop and is mouse pointer and everything working fine ? Im a little cautious about inverters because ive tried before that a cheap Doxin inverter worked fine on my stationary pc, but a more expensive Epever made too much grafic distorsion?

@@Viking_X yes I know what you are talking about. I have a box with faulty cheap inverters in my garage. In the car to charge my Mac I am using this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHe0l4d4o9GUe8U . The one shown in this video I am using for more than 8 years with no problems. It runs anything you can think of and I am very pleased. To be honest I haven't used it with my laptop but I have put a hairdryer or even charge another car with it.

@@tedonash2681 I have no doubt that its veryfull and reliable but could you try and run your laptop and other fine electronics on it as a test? i think of purchasing the same inverter but i saw a youtube video with a similar inverter, same brand Edecoa, that messed up his laptop, mouse and other things didnt work ( like when you run fine electronics on modified sine wave), and it was pure sine wave that looked similar brand to yours ( Edecoa), so i dont dare purchasing it without knowing if it can run laptops without problems. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4TSlWmraJydbac

5:30 Wouldn’t it be safer to first plug the white plug into the inverter, and then to turn on the inverter (so any sparks happen in the especially-designed inverter switch), rather than risk sparking inside a powered inverter socket?

Hi, this seems very nice. Is it possible to use AC outlet with engine turned off? Will it use (with powered engine off) power from highcapacity batteries or from the small one 12 battery (on which wires are connected)? Thanks, your video is very interesting.

In next video you can test what you have to switch on, to turn on DC400/DC12 converter. Perhaps without this, when you put invertor and 12V battery have low voltage then the DC/DC turn on itself.

Thanks for the videos, really plain, simple and clean explanations! I have a side problem, I'm interested in buying the new E-UP! with the 32 kWh batteries but the DC plug is not sold as standard in my country by VW dealers (Romania). Do you know if that's the case in Bulgaria too? Kind regards!

What do you mean by DC plug? Is this what you refer to : ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1k1WVaIfrK1Rjy0Fmq6xhEXXak.jpg ? The new VW e-up in Bulgaria is offered with standard CCS outlet: sc01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB14jiGg4PI8KJjSspoq6x6MFXaH/80A-150A-200A-quick-DC-charger-connector.jpg_350x350.jpg

@@tedonash2681 He means the car’s Combined Charging System socket, which is optional on the cheaper e-up trim (which comes standard only with a Type-2 AC charging socket). I think in Germany this extra DC socket is 625 EUR, in Romania it’s 545 EUR.

Dan Te. I understand now. I haven’t heard about this option here in Bulgaria. I personally will not go without DC charging option because this will increase my charging time many times during the long trips

Buy the CCS option, otherwise you will block the public charging spots for 5h to charge your vehicle instead of 1h with CCS. Basically you will only be able to charge at home.

14:03 “Also, I think I can manage to charge a car using my car, so for example if someone has run out of juice on the road, you can always put the inverter into your car and use its output to charge their car, for as long as it's needed to go to the next charging station.” Due to all the inefficient conversions, perhaps the total energy consumed by you simply towing them to the station would be less than them taking and using yours.

I am planing to measure what will be the loss of all this conservation and see real results of what is the lost. In my case the e-up is not suitable for towing so this is not an option. But if your car tow you can always do that. The ability to have AC from EV is useful in emergency situations

Hello Tedo Can you charge the car from a wall box with 7.2kw AND at the same time draw 1kW via the AC converter from the battery?
@tedonash2681
@tedonash2681 4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t tested that but it shouldn’t be a problem as it is the same as to run the AC on max and charge the car. This is possible and I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t work with the inverter. Just keep the car consumption low so that you don’t hit the 1.5 kW limit of the DC-DC converter

Unfortunately this is not very effective, might be fine for short usage, DC400V->DC12V->AC230V with turned on car circa 0,3kwh and headlights (shame you didnt record total energy usage with obdeleven on high voltage battery) I was hoping to disconnect those orange cables from main inverter instead of drilling hole (with car off should be no voltage, those lead directly to high voltagte battery through some relays) and use DC400V->AC230V inverter directly of those hopefully without turning on the car (with some trick to leave those relays on via obd2 or hotwiring them or just for the test turn car on), this way you dont mess up with your warranty by drilling holes :)

It is not efficient this is true. I wanted to show that it is possible. Messing with 400V is dangerous and I really don't want to show how to do it on youtube. Someone can really hurt himself. Disconnecting the battery wires from the main HV electric panel will lead to a lot of car errors and unavailability to start the car. I have been there and it is not pleasant.

I had to go to the dealer. We are on the same train and I am pushing to V2G system. The way I see it is to work directly with CCS outlet. In order to make it work I need to buy HomePlug Green Phy Power Line Communication Module (www.codico.com/shop/en/evse-side-configured-dlan-green-phy-module.html) and hook it to CCS connector. But that requiters a lot of research, time and money that I am not feeling comfortable to spend at this moment.
