Need to configure a router to work with Verizon 5G Home Internet? Here's how I setup the ASK-NCQ1338 gateway to work with my Asus Aimesh system (main router is a RT-AC88U). The newer ARC-XCI55AX cube gateway is very similar to setup but the interface is different. I discuss how to setup DHCP server, DMZ, IP passthrough, static IP address, firewall, etc to get it to work together the most robust way.
Be sure to see my other Verizon and T-Mobile Home Internet Videos:

Just wanted to say that your are an absolute goat for this. Only video I found with valid information on the pass through issue as well as 3rd party router speed issue. My RT-AX82U now works seamlessly for heavy task like gaming and streaming with no hitches. Verizon should make this public knowledge but Im happy you did. Cheers🤙🏽

I'm using Verizon Home Internet with an ASUS AI Mesh system. Something I did was a ping test to determine optimal MTU Size. Anything over 1428 and my packets were fragmented, so I set my WAN MTU setting (Merlin Software) of my ASUS to 1428 and things are running very quick & smooth

Excellent explanation and a fantastic video. I learned more from your video in fifteen minutes than I did scouring the Internet for hours on this subject. So thanks! Question, if I want to use the same Asus router and Verizon 5g internet gateway as shown in the video, how do I set it up so I can use the Verizon 5g gateway as a wifi router for the house and the Asus for my garage 100ft away. I have cat6 between the two locations. Thanks in advance for any information you can pass on.
@NaterTater
@NaterTater Жыл бұрын
You could do that but I'd suggest getting a 2nd Asus router instead and run a AiMesh setup that would allow seamless wifi switching for your devices. Meaning they would connect to the house or barn automatically and switch back and forth based on which has better signal. Here's how you'd add a router to your barn after following this video to add the first Asus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5zWlmxqf7Jjf6M

OMG - this video is GOLD. I got Verizon Home LTE about 6-8 weeks ago and immediately connected it to my existing network using passthrough. It worked okay, but I had off and on connectivity issues and even worse - DNS issues. While browsing on my Apple computers, I would get frequent DNS (sites not loading or not found) issues. It was driving me crazy. After following Nater Tater's advice, my internet is now working great. Thank you! BTW - I have an "ASK" device. So the UI was different. But I eventually figured out how to turn off DHCP after reseting the router from passthrough mode.

Its funny... my T-mobile Arcadyan has been doing the reboot thing that my previous Nokias were doing... So I called tmobile, assuming its probably another one that overheated at some point... they tried to blame my external router as the possible reboot issue. Saying maybe the ethernet cord was sending "milliwatts" of electricity back to the Arcadyan. I told them no, look all over Reddit, Tmobile forums and KZbin, EVERYONE recommends adding a router and cutting off the wifi. Nobody says a router is a bad idea. They said, "Oh. Okay."

I got the Verizon 5G Home Internet and I was able to setup a TP Link Mesh router with it using the IP Passthrough (IP Passthrough seems to be working normally now). But before I got the router and the reason why I bought one was because while gaming this service sucks! In Apex Legends, with the closest server to me, my ping goes from 50-150+ ms which is insane! First, 50 is pretty high in a FPS game and second the fact that it fluctuates to 150+ (a ping you would get if you connected to Japan) makes it unplayable. Same thing happened with Valorant, Overwatch, etc. Adding a router made it a little more stable but didn't fix any of the issues. I don't know how to fix it but if you play any kind of competitive game, I do not recommend Verizon 5G at home until there is an actual stable way to play games.

I would like to add that I noticed with the ASKEY Verizon cube that it does get very warm with the WIFI on, but also the cellular radio adds to that heat. I noticed when these boxes get a bit too warm it will cause them to reset or glitch out. This is why I want to well basically do what you did and have a secondary router handle all of the processing. I will follow some of the steps from your video, thank you for posting this for people with the ASKEY verizon cube.

The web interface for the Verizon 5G Home Internet has apparently changed since you did this video. I set my Netgear router up with the Verizon gateway over a year ago using your video and it has worked flawlessly. I was getting the same speeds connecting to my Netgear router as I was getting connnecting to the Verizon gateway until recently. Now, I am only getting about 30-50 Mbps whether connecting wirelessly or with Ethernet connected to my Netgear router. I have an Apple TV connected by Ethernet directly to the Verizon gateway and it gets speeds of 200-300 Mbps. I have a second Apple TV connected by Ethernet with the Netgear router and it now only gets 30-50 Mbps. It used to get 200-300Mbps. I have tried using the other LAN connector on the Verizon gateway but that didn’t help. I also connected a Linksys router just to be sure it wasn’t a problem with the Netgear router but that didn’t help either. I’m bumfuddled!

It will disable Wifi, DHCP etc. I am using a Sonicwall TZ470 Router. For the Network Connection Interface for the Verzion WAN, I had to select DHCP instead of a Static IP from the Verizon for it to work.

My trial is almost up but this thing was a PITA to configure to avoid Double NAT - they intentionally made it difficult to find the Bridge/Passthrough settings in the newer webgui and they removed the field where even if you use them as a NAT Gateway you can't choose your own DNS! I eventually went with the following settings on the 5G with an Opnsense box attached: 5G: DMZ Enabled IP Passthrough Enabled Firewall Off entirely (note: be careful if you do this!) IPv6 Disabled Wifi Disabled LAN DHCP Off This makes it a dumb modem essentially and the light will turn green rather than white Opnsense (or whatever you're using for Layer 3/routing): Leave WAN port as DHCP - no need to set static like the video says but ymmv, maybe I wasn't connected at the time the IP changed so I didn't get my connection dropped Set up rest of LAN NAT/Firewall accordingly with your preferred Public DNS provider and etc. Run a speed test of course but also do a dns leak test to make sure Verizon isn't forcing their DNS. And also do a pathping or tracert command to any website to make sure you're not using Double NAT. The above config is what worked for me messing with it on and off for a few weeks and hopefully this helps someone else. I've worked with many soho routers and enterprise switches and this dumb 5G box gave me more trouble than anything else by far. TL;DR - Speeds are about 300mbps if configured right but 30-40ms ping/latency is not worth it when with cable I'm getting like 8-12ms

Thank you for your video. I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions for assistance. I just set up my Verizon 5G Home Internet Gateway and I'm trying to do the Port Forwarding for my LTS Security System and IP Cameras. I went into the Advance Settings on the Verizon Gateway and attempted to set up Port Forwarding but had no success. I input my DVR iPv4 address for Port 80, Port 8000, and Port 8554 but it didn't work. Any suggestion? I was wondering if I buy a router and connect it into the Verizon Gateway, then plug my Ethernet cable for my LTS Security System into the new router, can I then go into the router and set the Port Forwarding up in the router bypassing the Verizon Gateway. Your thoughts? Thanks, Ken

When I first got my NCQ1338 I was able to change my Verizon default IP to 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1 that my router uses but today after doing a factory reset on the Verizon NCQ1338 I no longer see the ability to change that, or the "PASSTHROUGH option. I think there was a recent firmware or software upgrade in July so maybe it took that away after I reset it? Damn now Verizon stole the IP I need and forces my TP Link to use another range. A bunch of shit in my home is set for the other range and would be a pain to change

I wanted to ask about the IP passthrough glitch, I am not using a second router and my IP passthrough is off but I still experience the drop in internet connection multiple times a day. What I have noticed is when I one or more of my devices have been idle and then reconnects, it seems to cause ip conflicts and drops internet connection. I tried turning off ipv6, but I still experience the same issue. Have you experienced this issue at all, or have any suggestions?

Yes thats not uncommon with cellular internet. Its where your connection exits the Verizon network and to "the internet". One way you can change it is using a VPN with a server nearby (hopefully one close enough for your streaming services). Another option is calling the streaming service and explaining the issue.

Nate, I own or use the gateway from T-mobile, which you helped me use the script some months ago to take the wifi off. The problem I am having with that gateway is it doesn't play well with my router as a backup WAN. It's probably because of the lack of control the user has over the gateway with it being double NAT configured with my mesh router behind it. Does this ASK-NCQ1338 work ok as a backup WAN for you or are you just using it as a primary WAN? I have not been happy with T-Mobile's gateway instability and am going to be giving it back to them to try something with more control available, which this Verizon model appears to have. Regards..

I have your same router and Verizon gateway. In addition I have a QNAP NAS and have not been able to get OpenVPN to work, thinking my issue is the Verizon gateway not forwarding my port. Appears to be blocked. Sounds like if I follow your Passthrough recommendation it will work. Do I need any additional firewalls other than the ASUS and QNAP to protect my device? I'm thinking VPN with Port Forward of an unusual port and very strong passwords will do. By the way, this is by far the best instructional video I've seen, and I've watched lots of them. Thanks you! I'm going to subscribe.
@NaterTater
@NaterTater Жыл бұрын
wow, I had a QNAP NAS prior too! I'm now NAS-less though. Your ASUS and QNAP have firewall features so I'd just make sure those are active an you should be good to go! You might try just the Verizon DMZ setting to your ASUS and then let your ASUS do the port forwarding. If that doesn't work then go the full IP passthrough mode on the verizon gateway. The reason being is once you do IP Passthrough on the verizon it makes it a little more difficult to manage the verizon settings (it's IP will be one digit higher than your ASUS's WAN IP).

Would this process be the same for the Asus ZenWifi AX Hybrid? I followed this video and all of the Asus settings appear to be the same, but when I do some speed tests via wifi and ethernet connection to the Asus router, I'm getting slower than expected speeds. Maybe it's just a fluke and that's just the internet at that time, but when I run the same speed test on my Verizon phone (which I would assume is connecting to the same cell tower as the 5G Gateway), I'm getting about double the speeds as what I get when connected to the router.

I set up Verizon 5G and disabled wifi from the gateway. I plugged in my eero mesh system and for the last 24 hours things seem well. The discrepancy is in download speed, the eero wired is getting about 300 mbs whereas the wifi is about 160-210 depending on location. When I look at settings in Verizon gateway I notice there is a Bridge section and grayed out (but there is a check mark) are the wifi access points (5ghz; 2.4ghaz; & Ethernet), the status column says the wifi is disconnected but ethernet is connected. there is an IP passthrough option it too shows under status as 'connected' in green but it is not checked. Good Afternoon Nater Tater, I really appreciate your content. The 5g set up was such a big help.I had a question regarding the the pass-through to my router.Its a linksys MR7300 series, wifi 6. I have noticed that I showed connection, I get download speeds, but almost half of what the verizon receiver is showing when I check speeds on my router. Although sometimes the verizon app cannot show what my speeds are from the tower. There are times where load times take a bit longer on my desktop. My biggest concern would be devices not working properly, such as my IOT devices ( alexa home, wyze hub, wifi on my portable devices). They connect, but in the case of the IOT devices, they wont function properly, always cutting out or saying no internet. My Ethernet connection is stable. There was a 3 week period recently where everything worked with no issues. The this past week right back to issues I stated earlier. Hope you had a safe and happy holiday.
