Need to change the mtu setting in the router from the default 1500 to 1428 which is what Verizon recommends for their service. This will help prevent packet fragmentation.

You can also just hook up your router to port 2 without IP passthrough and use it as an access point. It works the same, you just can't access the router GUI. You then have option to use the gateway wifi or your own router's wifi, or any device hooked up thereafter to the network.

Thanks for sharing, I do the same way without enabling the ip passthrough. The 2.4 for some reason doesn’t want to work with my WiFi outlets so I use my tplink 2.4 for it to work. However, I’m able to access my router configuration, even remotely.

I inadvertently started out on port 2, when I look at the control settings it shows ip passthrough (in green) is connected BUT the checkbox isn't checked. I have eero mesh, so I just plug and played my eero after setting up verizon box - and happen stance used port 2. Does connection in green in ip passthrough (although not checked) mean it is on? My wired download speed is about 300 mb, with wifi 160-200...depending on house, that is 24 hours later, I believe this can change with time. ty

@@WafflesMcFluffy I would suggest factory resetting your Verizon internet box and if that didn't work you can always call verizon and ask them to turn it on for you so that you can connect a different router to it. Good Luck

Just from the router because the router part of the box gets disabled and you can’t connect to it.

This is helpful. I like my Verizon internet, but it doesn't have very much range unfortunately. Being able to hook it up to my old router will give me the range I need. I needed to go outside for my security system cameras.

Yeah I did that like 5 months ego and internet is a working great with my stronger router. Only problem is that I can't connect to the Verizon box settings anymore. I assume because is not acting like the router anymore, right ? Not that I need to connect, just wondering, if the Verizon would do some software updates will box update anyway without me accessing the box and click on software update in setting . Any idea ?

Hello. You can still access the box admin setting page using Ethernet cable. I am not sure about the software update though. I never thought about it to be honest.

Been having issues with the Verizon ASK- model modem/router in ip passthrough with an external router. There are strange issues after the last firmware update with slow loading, some sites will not connect. The problem is intermittent and unpredictable. Upon delving into the rabbit hole, apparently this is a known issue with the old ASK- model routers. Verizon has no intention of correcting the issue. The new WNC or ARC- models have no issues. The process of upgrading through Verizon is an absolute nightmare btw. Ultimately ends up with having to close your account and open a new one. Insane.

Once you enable passthrough is Lan 1 port no longer usable for an ethernet connection to the internet? In other words, had you not disconnected your laptop would it still be connected to the internet or only the Verizon cube?

Good question. I think I would still be able to use it as Ethernet. Since my router has 4 more Ethernet ports, I never tested to see whether lan 1 can be used as Ethernet

You can access the Verizon though your phone to disable the ip passthrough via its admin login.

They might have updated this so I am not sure but back then You had to contact via Ethernet to do this. Using WiFi you could change other settings but not this setting.

I did this to my router, and it works great, however instead of the white light I have a solid green light. I know the green light indicates the wifi on the Verizon gateway is disabled (which it is in passthrough mode), but in the video, you have a solid white light. Should I have a solid white light or solid green light?

If you are connected to the WiFi through your router then the color of the light doesn’t matter. I think you have the newer version of the Verizon box and it has green light instead of white. But make sure you are connected to your external router.

I have an Orbi Mesh setup and seems to work ok but my satellite router is not being recognized and is offline. I have an Ethernet cord running from port 2 of the Verizon router into my main Orbi router. But the satellite router I have upstairs is just showing offline. How can I have it also connected?

@@ANewIdeaFarsi I successfully changed my Verizon 5G Model ARC-XCI55AX to passthrough mode. However, when I now try to log back into the router via LAN1 port, I cannot connect any longer. I tried LAN2 as well, no good. Tried a dozen times and can no longer access the Verizon Modem - I keep getting an error and it never takes me to the Password page. Not sure what to do now if I decide I need to return it.

Once you plug in your netgear router, do all the settings and connected devices automatically transfer over to the netgear. Does the ssid and passwords all remain the same?? Also, if you need to access router settings are you using Verizon settings page or are you now logging in to the netgear router?

Yes my password didn’t change. To change the router settings you need to log in to your router page in my case is Netgear.

You don’t need a router if you have the box. That box is modem and router but the reason I connected my own router to it is because I get better internet speed.

@@ANewIdeaFarsi I live in a very rural area and get less than 10 mbps but with the help of a 4x4 mimo antenna connected to the Verizon box I get in the range of 20 to 50 depending on the day. Interestingly enough using this method the router seemed to give me slower speeds when an Xbox was connected via Ethernet to the router that was also connected wirelessly to the Verizon box via up pass through.

What about DHCP? Its not a good idea for both routers to handle DHCP. I heard you need to turn off the protocol on one of the routers.
