Wow! I just finished with my very first flannel pajama set (top and pants) I was having so much trouble with the sleeves! I must’ve picked out seams 4 - 5 times before I found this tutorial. I followed your instructions to the letter and the top turned out perfect! I can’t begin to thank you enough! The sleeves look so nice now. Like it came from a high end store! I made it for my mom who is going through cancer treatment and she is cold all the time now. So even though it is August in Minnesota now, the flannel is perfect for her. I can’t wait to give them to her. And as a beginner, I am so glad that I have learned how to do sleeves so beautifully. Once again… Thank you for teaching this method!🦋

I just sewed my first sleeve and I wish I had seen this beforehand. It was quite a struggle for me and I will use your flat method next time. Thank you for explaining it so clearly.

Your clear language, unrushed approach and hand gestures are SO HELPFUL! Thank you for your thorough explanations of each step and why each step is important. This is real teaching - and because your teaching helps me actually learn, not just watch, I can remember !!!

This BRILLIANT technique is completely New to me. Sleeves can be sooo challenging to set in a way that does not screech “homemade.” Your flat approach will help me feel more in control of the entire sleeve installation process. Thank you, Laura!!🥰👏

I've been sewing a long time and always struggled with set-in sleeves. This tutorial is excellent--you're a good teacher. Very clear and concise in your instructions, without a lot of unnecessary chit-chat that only serves to confuse the learner. I never thought to wrap the thread around the pin to anchor it while gathering the other side--brilliant! I will definitely use this flat style next time. Thank you! I'm a new subscriber. :-)

Very good, detailed tutorial. I was so glad when I learned the flat method for sewing in a sleeve. It's much easier than trying to fit a tube to a hole. Even though I know the basic flat-style method already, your details will help me get that perfect finish on the next top I sew.

This is a great tutorial. I haven't sewn this type of garment in years, but that's exactly how I learned how to sew in a sleeve.

Sewing the sleeves in flat - brilliant. I always sew French seams (I don’t have a serger) and this will really make it so much easier. I can’t believe i never thought of this. Thank you so much for sharing this as well as all of your other helpful ideas.

I remember being pretty steamed to learn I had been setting in sleeves the hard way since I was 10 years old when i could have been sewing on the flat and saved so much frustration.

I loved watching this tutorial and your calm voice describing each step. I haven’t done garment sewing for about 20 years but want to see if I can sit long enough to make a few tops. Watching you makes me want to try it right now! I remember an instructor telling us to sew two lines of basting in case one of them broke. Do you ever do this? I’m going to watch a few more of your videos and then do some online fabric shopping! Thanks so much!

hi, I have a question, I am currently tailoring a shirt that was made using that method. The inside seam of the sleeve and side seam of the shirt are lapped seams done in one seam. I need to make the sleeve thinner by 1.5in, it is a long sleeve how do you propose I do so?

Wow, Genius! I just put in my first sleeve following another person’s tutorial. It looks TERRIBLE! To say the least! I only put in one because it looks so bad before I started looking for a better way to do the flat sew method. Which is what I had used. My pattern, McCalls 2476 view C (pajama top) instructions were not clear enough for me as a beginner. No one alive in my family sews so I had no one to ask for help. The set in sleeve methods I had found online seemed more suitable for a blazer or a dress or dress shirt than pajamas. And didn’t seem to be anything like my pattern instructions. So I was just about to rip out the seam I had finished a start over when I started looking for something that looked better than what I used! Viola there you were! Yay! And although both tutorials were similar, you explained much more that the other one had completely left out! ERRR!!!! Frustrating as can be! I spent 3 1/2 hours trying to adjust the ease from one end all the way to the other end. It ended up looking like a poofy mess! Anyway I am so glad to have found this tutorial. Pure GENIUS 🦋

Okay, class, the topic this week is "How to set the sleeve into the garment. We will learn Laura's FLAT METHOD and Joy's CRIMPING technique." It's a fun coincidence that two of the seamstresses I follow on KZbin did a SET IN SLEEVE tutorial within days of one another. Laura's FLAT method is one that I prefer whenever possible. (When isn't it possible? I'm not sure.) Like someone else commented, (back in the day) we used two parallel lines of loose basting stitches for the gathering threads, setting our upper tension a bit more loose and pulling on the bobbin threads simultaneously to form the gathers. But a couple of days ago Joy Bernhardt showed a way to create the gathered sleeve cap without that thread-pulling process. It is called CRIMPING and is created by holding the fabric tight against the back of the presser foot as the feed dogs move it under the needle and thread. Check it out if you're interested in learning another skill, Joy gives a real close-up illustration of the process. She does, however, set the sleeve into the garment after both side seams have been sewn rather than using the FLAT method. I'm going to try the CRIMPING on some scraps just for the fun of it as I don't have a garment ready to sew right now.

I hate it when a technique has a dozen different names. Turns out that I have been doing it this way.
