How to add a switch to a light fixture

This video explains how to add a electrical switch to an existing light fixture in your home. Wiring is explained to give basic instruction how current travels to the switch and back to the light fixture. A single-pole wall switch is used in video to explain the most common type of wall switch and how it works. Always be sure the power is off before starting any electrical work. Always use proper electrical tools and follow all local and national electrical codes.

Solved my problem! Though I had to replay the video between the 4 minute and 5 minute marks about a dozen times, I finally discovered the need to create a pigtail to reconnect the light. Then it worked! Thanks for your video.

I like that he shows the switch at the end of the circuit instead of the middle. Most videos don't show this and this is often needed.

My question is if this isn't the last fixture on the circuit (there is a wire leaving my light fixture, im not sure where it goes considering there is ducting and insulation hiding the wires and they may lead to my sump pump or living room receptacles) would everything else after this fixture be controlled by the switch that was added?

Yes. If you look at the video 4:58 you will see black wire being connected to light. To connect multiple lights you will need to add a black (hot) wire at this connection. Flipping the switch will allow power to go to all lights. Note you also need a white or neutral wire at each light fixture.

OH, QUESTION: Do you ground the other end of the neutral wire somewhere in the light fixture? All you said was to attach the ground to the green screw in the SWitch, but nothing about that wire in the fixture itself...........
