Thanks so much- I love this idea. I may have to choose a signature color for the bottom of my bags a la Jimmy Choo!

I've done this myself & it looked good but my method was a bit more fiddly so I think I'll switch to yours. Thank you. Lifting the end of the DST used to frustrate me until I discovered sliding/rubbing over the ends with the tape reel itself seemed to get a good adhesion so the paper strip comes away more easily. Works for me anyway.

This is great. I've tried so many ideas to give my messenger bags more structure. I also took the stitching the seems Down on the bottom of the mini box tote. Looks nice and flattens the bottom nicely. Thank you

I love your idea on how you do the accent bottom on the boxed bottom. My question to you is how do you put a zipper in on the top. Do you do the the zipper sandwich first then the accent bottom. I can use you help on your idea. I watch ALL your videos and learn a lot.
@SewGnar Жыл бұрын
The accent bottom goes on the exterior and the zipper would install on the interior, so they would not interfere with each other.

Love this!! I've often wondered if this would be sturdy in the corners. Just confirming your corner cutouts are 2in so actually a 3.5in corner opening after stitching sides and bottom.... but the new bottom is 4inches? so you want the 1/4in overage?
@SewGnar2 жыл бұрын
I cut the 2” squares and make the 4” wide bottom and it fits perfectly.

Very informative video and I want to try this method. Would you sew the top zipper on first to both sides of the outer of the bag before you put in the boxed bottom? Thank you! I have been watching a lot of you videos. I have not been sewing a long time, but hope to make bags like yours. Can you advise about the top zipper? Thank you!
@SewGnar Жыл бұрын
Check out the Taisteal sewalong video series, I add a recessed zipper in it. There are 5 total I believe, and I think it may be the second or third that I add the zipper (read the descriptions to find out)!

Hi! I just watched this, and was so excited to see that I can get rid of "saggy boxed bottoms". How do you determine the width/length of other bag boxed bottoms? Is there a standard formula? TIA
@SewGnar Жыл бұрын
Yes there’s a formula. If you want a bag that is 10” tall by 8” wide with a 4” bottom, you divide the bottom by 2 and add that to the height and width when cutting your main panels. So using those measurements you’d cut two main panels 12” tall by 10” wide, then cut your bottom boxes at 2”. Hopefully that makes sense. It’s height plus depth divided by 2, then width plus depth divided by 2.
@ilaallen190 Жыл бұрын
@@SewGnar hummm . I'll have to work on this concept for my next bag. I'm not quite seeing it. Thanks!

I imagine that bottom makes it pretty challenging to " birth" your bag in the end(?)
@SewGnar Жыл бұрын
Not if you leave a hole in the bottom seam and a pocket opening! Flip through the bottom then pull the bottom up through the pocket and close the hole, then sew up the pocket hole!
@stitchcrafter Жыл бұрын
@SewGnar I'm just saying, since it's not very pliable, and large, might need a bigger hole than normal.. it's a struggle in the best of times, right?
@SewGnar Жыл бұрын
@@stitchcrafterthat’s why you leave the bottom open, the birthing hole is several inches wider so it’s not hard to flip at all.
@stitchcrafter Жыл бұрын
@SewGnar there we go...I haven't meant to belabor the point, it's just one of the things that have always held me back fm adding that stiff bottom. Now I'll have to give it a shot.
