I really like your drawing that shows your original outlet and the new one you are installing and the wiring is VERY clear. I need to check your other videos because I want to change a single duplex outlet into a dual duplex out and it is not the last box in the circuit so I need to see how to continue to the other downstream outlets.
@sparky_izzy

You would need to shut off the circuit, remove the old box & undo all the wiring. Then get yourself a new 2 gang remodel box, cut out the old hole to the new dimensions of the 2 gang box. You would add “pigtails” to both new receptacle. Which is a 6-8” single black, white & ground to each receptacle. Then you hook up all the blacks together, all the whites together & all the grounds together with the proper wire nuts. Hope that makes sense. You gave me a video idea. If I come across this, I will make a video!

Good job overall, but I'd like to make a few points/suggestions. On the cut in box, those are integral clamps and meant to hold the NM cable (Romex) in the box. You aren't supposed to rip them off. Also, I find it easier to strip the wires before I put them into the box so I use an NM Cable stripper that strips 12-2 and 14-2.

Great question! I would use a fork terminal and have only 1 wire with a fork landed on the terminal screw. BUT it’s very important that you use a fork that’s rated for the correct voltage. You CAN’T use a generic fork terminal from the auto part store. These by 3M are rated up to 600volts - Use these for #12awg wire: amzn.to/3zwCEwr Or these for #14awg wire: amzn.to/3VRAtLn And you can use these crimpers: amzn.to/4bu9YBl Or amzn.to/3XKNtVN

Any reason you use pigtails instead of just having the power source romex go right to the outlet and have the other outlet go right into the other side of the outlet, so no pigtails? Also, if I want to have two outlets come off of 1 existing outlet, could I use your pigtail method and have 1 live wire going, and 3 other pigtails going out of each connection with a screw on cap?m? Would all those wires then be able to fit inside a box?

Thank-you for this video. One question: how did you know the circuit could handle and additional outlet? With all your experience it was probably just a given. But if adding an outlet to a circuit w/ multiple outlets already, how is this done? Thanks!
@sparky_izzy
@sparky_izzy 5 ай бұрын
Here’s what I would do. 1. Find the breaker for the circuit 2. Turn off the breaker and walk around the house and write down what the circuit feeds 3. Look at the amperage off the breaker. It will be a 15amp or 20amp breaker. 4. Add up the amperage for what I have plugged in to the circuit currently and what I want to plug in the future. 5. Make sure the amperage is rated no more than 80% of the rating of the breaker for a continuous load. 15amp - no more than 12 amps 20amp breaker - no more than 16amps If you are plugging in small things like a charger, computers or general purpose stuff. You should be fine.

@sparky_izzy
@sparky_izzy 11 ай бұрын
Off the top of my head, there are two options I can think of. One would be that you cut the sheet rock in order to drill a hole through the stud so that you can pull your wires The other option I’m thinking of is running up into the attic and over the stud and come back down to tap into the existing receptacle. Hope this helps.

@sparky_izzy

Yes that will work, only if you connect the new outlet to the “load” side of the GFCI. Adding a GFCI takes care of the ungrounded problem. So if there is a ground fault, the gfci & any other outlets being fed by it on the “load” side will be protected by the GFCI & “grounded”.

Your video is well done, but I do have to point out that your drawing is incorrect. It shows 3 wires, including the pigtail wire, twisted together in one wire nut, you should have a total of 4 wires twisted together, otherwise there would be no need for a pigtail. If you minus the pigtail in your drawing you would now only have 2 wires, one would go on either side of the outlet, so you would not need the pigtail.
