I have enjoyed using both of these methods. The flexibility or just plain "choice to do what I want" in Studio One is one of the very appealing aspects of it. I struggled with automation prior to Studio One because it always felt like I needed some special club handshake to get it to work intuitively; conversely when I cam over to S1, I found it extremely easy to do some of the same things I battled before. The "clip" (event) effects are not new to me from my old DAW, Cakewalk, but also nice that they are so easily accessible - and a handy tip (as if Joe didn't already know this) is that you can ALT drag an effect onto an audio event and it will add that effect to the event and turn on Event FX for it at the same time, even without the inspector open. Gotta love that Studio One Drag and Drop. Thanks for the video, Joe.

Also, a super quick way to add automation lanes to a track is just to click the parameter you want to add automation for and then simply press Alt+A immediately afterwards and it will add the lane for you, saving you having to click n drag from the hand icon. This means you can 'click, then Alt+A' for several parameters, one after another, and they'll all get added to the automation lane. You'll know you've done it correctly because the little 'automation dot' will appear immediately on the most recent parameter you've chosen (these dots, though, won't appear on things like the on/off button, so just check the lane to make sure they got added). Works a charm :)

Worth noting that you don't have to open the inspector and enable event effects to apply/use them. You can just option/alt drag your effect onto your event and you're done. Way faster than using automation and, if you want to reuse it later in the song, just option/alt drag your order onto each instance.

I love this DAW and the only reason I got it was because of Mr Gilder here, I'm wrapping my diploma for music production and have been using the big three DAW's Pro Tools, Logic, and Ableton but at home I use studio one. And I even did a scoring assignment yesterday in it. The video function in studio one works perfectly no glitching, lag, or weird interface for it. Studio one is by far the best DAW in the industry in my opinion

Hey Joe. Nice video. How do you automate delay to an entire track? Like if I want a song to stutter, how can I add automation to the master fader?
@salintium2 жыл бұрын
Those are easier than the way I do it. I go to the mixer at the bottom where it says auto off, I click select writable. I put the marker a little before and play it back (not record) turn it on at part where I want it and off when I'm done. I did this with the chorus and lead of Rush's (In the mood). SOO COOL. I spent a long time trying to find the right DAW, and was dead set on Ableton, until Cassie O'Hanlon recommended Studio One 4. It wasn't just her either. A couple others recommended it to at Sweetwater. Very glad I went with it. now when I watch videos of recording and mixing that use other DAWs the question is " why don't you do it this way". Why because its not Studio One.

Can I also apply this method on a group bus of vocal takes where I just want one specific word delayed on all the takes
@odmusicman7 ай бұрын
Great Joe. You can also just dupe the track, trim the audio on the dupe track down to the necessary parts and add the needed delay to THAT track. However, your method is less resource hungry.

Very cool Joe, as usual. What if I want the tail to fade, like at the end of a song? I end with a sharp hit but the tail keeps going and makes the song longer than I want. Thanks

One way would be to use the send as in his first example but automate the efx channel’s volume instead of the vocal channel’s on/off.

Question, to create the nodes on the automation line I find that I have to manually add them, what are the functions you are using to highlight the region and auto populate the nodes then pull down the automation line? I've never seen that done before. Thanks
@RiffMusic1970 Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure you just put the cursor in the top half of the track, left click and drag over the section you want. Then go back over the section until the cursor becomes a horizontal I beam and click and drag. The points will be put where the part is highlighted.
@beatweezl3 жыл бұрын
That's weird. Unless I did something wrong, I tried adding a long tail delay to an event but the tail stopped at the end of the event so I had to draw in a blank event and attach it the event with the delay on it and then bounce it all together. What a hassle. Maybe the delay was on the track I can't remember what I did I just know the tail stopped at the end of the event and I had to fix it.

Is there a chance that Studio One will be adding a Dim Solo option in a future release? I think that would be super useful.
@nwobserver80083 жыл бұрын
Dave, you know if you route all of your buses to a PreMain bus (which itself is routed to Main), and then assign whatever track or bus you want a dim solo on to Main instead of PreMain you can use the PreMain volume slider to provide a dimmed volume. It’s very easy.

Is 1/4 note delays mainly for delay throws or is their other uses for this? I notice there isn't a lot of videos on KZbin using 1/4 note delays for any other reason.

Thanks Joe, a THIRD option would be to just have the Analog Delay directly in the Insert section of the vocal track. No separate effects channel for Delay. Would you ever considering doing it that way? As you guessed that is how I do as self-taught Studio One dude :)
@LordoftheStrings1092 жыл бұрын
I used to try and do it this way but it doesn't work very well because when you automate the bypass on an insert it mutes the effect entirely so you lose the tale if another vox line starts. If you wanted to do it this way you would need to chop the word/part and put it on it's own track.
@JeighNeither2 жыл бұрын
You should really try using busses/sends for you effects. You get a much cleaner signal, & you have a lot more control over every aspect. Just because we're self-taught, doesn't mean we can't keep learning ;)
@allensmith88842 жыл бұрын
I can see I have to go study up on automation before I can use your first method. I tried to follow along and do it myself but when you got to the part of "click on A" to see the track automation, my situation did not match yours. Mine kept going to another track entirely. My automation labels were different; yadayada. I got lost. I love you guys but you go to fast and skip too many things for a beginner. Makes it really hard for this 65 year old brain to follow. A couple things that would help my older eyes is a bigger ARROW so I can find where you're at on the screen. And the other is to somehow, get rid of the video title that is always overtop the menus. ;-)
