You must mention that this makes a mess of the topology. Not everything has to be game ready but ngons are evil.

I just Ctrl t once the model is complete. If the ngons do mess up something even after triangulation it shouldn't take a lot of time.

Ngons are actually fine in games and concept models, they are terrible in Animation and VFX.

I usually make the individual pieces myself, (door, ceiling, floor, wall, etc) then I use the pieces as measurements and reference for the others, to give everything a cohesive style and scale. It’s super easy to import between projects, and saves you a lot of time guessing!

Just a begginner but wouldn't that mess up the topology of the overall mesh? That boolean would probably make ngones on the affected faces, right?

Newer Blender versions have a improved boolean system that doesn't mess the topology that much.

If you want clean geometry (quads) , booleans are not the way to go. But you can do retopology with something like Quad Remesher or manually fix it up. For walls I personally prefer loop cuts and quad polygons. If you do Bridge connect two polygons on the oposite sides of the wall, it will actually create a hole in the wall, with thin sides filled in.

In my opinion, I'm not sure that "mess up" is the right way to describe it. It does cause non-quad topology, but since I'm not deforming or subdividing the mesh, I don't think it really matters. People get really fired up about this so I'm sure someone will be along to disagree, but in flat, simple shapes like this I'm not seeing any issues. Now if you have to do it in a curved wall or surface? Different story

Good rule of thumb, try not to make ngons unless you know why?... if you're working on a personal project, who cares as long as the lighting doesn't look bad but if its a porfolio piece, make quads, or else whoever looks at your work would just think you don't know topology and won't hire you

If you want clean topology, don’t use booleans. Just use loop cuts like normal.

Boolean only work in blender, if you need to take it to a separate program, you'd have a lot of issues you'd have to clean up... I work in games and if you want to work in games just use loop cuts and learn good topology.... these "hacks" usually end up being a headache down the line ....

Also theres an addon called bool tools where you just select the two or more objects and with a shortcut get a menu to apply boolean modifiers. It also makes the brush object into a box visibility automatically.

For people worried about crazy topology, remember limited dissolve is you friend and can clean up even complicated meshes

Tbh tho at that point you may as well just use loop cuts since you’ll be wanting to clean stuff up into quads anyway.

Booleans are always useful, but you'd still end up with the same (or maybe worse topology) extra geometry if the modifier needed to be applied

@@TheCGEssentials I would expect none if the booleans don't need to be applied! And I do use them too, but I suppose if you needed to provide the model for whatever reason as just geometry, you'd need to apply the booleans and then go and tidy up the geometry and N-Gons and such? It's probably not an issue that would come up often though!

Quick question how did you make that modifier option look like that? Like another window tab cause mine is inside the Blender lol I'll be able to save some space

Great question - if you go up to "Window" and click on "New Window," that will pop out a new window that's still linked to the version of Blender that's open. You can click the dropdown on the upper left to select a window type - in this case it was "properties" :)

I don't know if I 100% know how to use booleans correctly, but from my experience it creates a bunch of n-gons which for games at the very least is bad. Although I'm probably just using them wrong.

If i do it that way, the door is not a hole it just creates an indentation, leaving the outline of the inserted cube… what do i do wrong? 😭

A lot of people show how to do boolean workflows but never the most important part, clean up. I have seen so many game models with n-gons and people saying "What are n-gons, or n-gons are fine"

What specific issues do you think this is going to cause in a flat wall? I'm not deforming it, I'm not subdividing it, I'm not doing complex UV mapping, so...what issues do you think the N-Gons this creates cause in this situation?
