*Great lightweight shelter. **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s love how it blocks the light from outside. It was a pain to open the first time but now that it is broke in goes up easy..*

Great instructional video. If I may make a suggestion. Go with a higher gauge wire such as 20 or even higher in the future as 16 is really an over kill for these low amp drawing led's. It will be much easier and cheaper to work with and the resistance will be minimal. Great video !!!!

You should add an in line fuse right on the positive wire connected to the battery. Make sure the fuse is closer to the battery though!

I especially liked the idea of the pliers in a holder for convenient access by the angler. Radio shack has closed so one would have to get components at a Home Depot, Menard's or what ever brand name big box store is available to you.

In my experience take the time to solder the connections. The amount of folding and opening a portable does makes the crimp connectors pull out. I've had a few pull out this season already. Switched and soldered them all

Great Video! This has inspired me to do this to my portable ice house. One thing tho, I do not think the wiring schematics are exactly correct. A great video none the less. I will be subscribing

First! Good video Garrett, this does confirm you're a mad scientist though. But seriously, I thought Radio Shack went out of business...

You should add a usb port for charging your phone/gopro with a phone holder on the side for playing music.

Cool idea the box is a little over the top cnc adobe illustrator most people making their own lights can't afford tools like that.

Great vid! I bought a set of these lights you linked and made my own lantern style. I'm confused with the power consumption though. The product says 2835 diode which my research tells me is .2W/per unit which would be 60 watts total (300 units) for the 5M strip. The description of the item says 24W total. I have a feeling the product is actually 3528 diode. Big difference. Any insight on this? Thanks

DTroFishOn I will confirm with a multimeter when I get home. I had done my calculations with the same numbers you listed.
@3RiversFishingAdventures8 жыл бұрын
I tried throwing mine on a multimeter last night, but unfortunately my meter has a blown fuse. I ran it for 4 hours on an 8ah battery and no noticeable dimming. I also got a response from the seller assuring me they are indeed 2835 diodes and power consumption is 24 watts.

DTroFishOn I still need to check with my multimeter, but the diodes are 2835. You can tell by the way they're shaped. 2835 are rectangular like these, but 3528 are circular.

I hooked my set of lights to a multimeter this weekend and got .96 amps which seemed like about half of what it should have been.
@DIYSportsman8 жыл бұрын
I checked mine at the end of the night yesterday when I was under 12v and got a similar reading, about 1 amp. I'm charging the battery and will check the amperage again on a full charge. It should be a little higher, but 1 amp is still much lower than I'd expect. On the bright side... even with the lights pulling pulling less power, they're bright enough to fish and film with, and the battery life is significantly longer than anticipated. I still want to do some digging as to why the lights pull less power. I'll check the number of lights/foot and do some research on temperature, etc.

Garrett, how long are your lights lasting with this set up? Battery run time I mean.
@DIYSportsman8 жыл бұрын
+Chad Ratzburg Great question. With all the lights in the roll on at the same time, they should run less than two hours on a flasher battery. But I ran mine for 2 hours and 15min last night, and they were still running. Running fewer lights increases battery life in two ways... they draw less current, but also lower power draw is more efficient with lead acid batteries. So, for "all night battery life" you'd be better off running a trolling motor battery and/or running fewer lights. I use the entire wheel but it's definitely more than you need to see what you're doing.

Does it matter ah I'm using? I have a "1280" 12v 8ah battery. But I see you "1290" which I assume is 12v 9ah. Or does it really not matter as I'll only be fishing or even using the lights for maybe an hour or two at a time. Thanks..
@DIYSportsman7 жыл бұрын
+wutang1979 The Ah rating is just the capacity. The larger the number, the longer it'll last. As long as the voltage is 12V, you're good.
