Thank you for sharing! This was the easiest video for me to follow and trust me, I’ve gone through so many complicated videos and been so frustrated. I’m not the best or most experienced sewer and I needed a very simple border for a quilt I made my my new grand baby. I now feel confident I can do this without another failure. Thank you!

6:01 lol yes I have no place that is big enough so I had to fold it in half and iron and measure then half length wise and iron and then the back and the batting it’s not too bad but I’ve learned so many things not to do. Thank goodness this quilt is just about finished!

Why do you measure and pin the length if you're using a long piece and then cutting afterwards? Thanks for any clarification!

Believe it helps to ensure you have a square corner. It is a technic I will implement in my quilting.

If you don't use a measurement, you could end up with a border that is wavy.

Thank you. That is the easiest description I have seen, thank you so much! I will definitely follow your instructions. I am making a T-Shirt quilt and just want to have a border around all the blocks and one around the whole quilt. So my question is, are these 2 in. borders you are adding? If so, are you leaving a ¼ in. seam allowance? I am the worst at doing the math for these types of measurements! My blocks are 12 x 12 right now without borders and I have 3 x 5. I am hoping to get one more row lengthwise to get 4 x 5 blocks and I think a 2 in. border would look nice but wonder how wide should I cut them to get them to look 2 in. Thank you so much. Sorry if it is a stupid question :).

The big trick to achieving flat and square quilts is to make sure that any borders across from each other are of identical widths. What folks often forget is that this must be true of any "framing strips" used within the blocks or quilt. Medallion style quilts can get seriously warped if strips, when added on opposite sides, are not of identical widths.

Sherri, what is the purpose of measuring the side of quilt and piece of border? I’ve never done this or have seen this instruction before so curious as to the purpose? Maybe I’m missing something? Thank you for any insight!

How do you decide how wide to make the border? What is the difference between border and sashing?
@sonniecampbell17884 жыл бұрын
Borders are sewn on last around the outside perimeter of the quilt top. Sashing are strips sewn around individual blocks and/or in between rows or columns of blocks. Sashing “breaks up” the blocks. And you can make borders any width you want, there’s no set typical width. I’ve made quilts without borders, quilts with only one single 1.5 inch border just to frame the quilt, up to multiple differing width borders all on one quilt. Borders are part of your creativity! 😀 I don’t measure and pin borders. I just sew them on like another row on the quilt.

Do you add the borders before you do the quilting?

For folks with only one functioning hand use double sided clear tape to hold pieces together for hand sewing using an embroidering hoop and see all of piece before taking off tape.
