I enjoy all of your videos, they are outstanding, and very helpful! I do alterations, and as I've commented before, it just helps to see it done sometimes, when you don't do something often. I just had to add, that I find your 'rigging' particularly fun, because I thought I was the only one! Unfortunately, I don't have a sewing room, so I've taken over a corner of my living room. I never thought I'd have hooks in the ceiling and cord hanging with multiple height loops so I could easily hang a gown, dress, or whatever at a comfortable height to just take to the machine! All these little tips, really do make it easier, because it can certainly be a struggle sometimes!

Question please! How did you sew the boning onto the lining with the machine? Youve done a fantastic job but I would have thought it would be so tricky to maneouvre the excess of dress around the machine whilst trying to sew it in an existing lining. Great job!

This dress was quite stretchy & light, so I just basted the boning down by hand lashing and put it under the machine and sewed it.

The simplest and most cost effective for your bride is to tuck all layers smoothly underneath, basically folding the train underneath the skirt. I use numbered crochet loops throughout all the layers with numbers ribbons to tie the train smoothly beneath the skirt. You will need to hang the dress and pin all seams when adding the loops to avoid bunching. Sometimes you will have to create neat little folds and catch them with the crochet loops when the outermost tulle layer is triple the width of the bottom layers. Hope this makes sense and helps.

I'm wondering if this gown was made with the bride's DD cups in mind? Because if it was made for a B cup, how would you get a DD cup in the space made for a B cup body? I'm also wondering if the DD bride needs "lift" but not extra curves, would you still use a push up bra cup? I have a slender DD woman I'm trying to sew for and this keeps me up at night! She needs support and some lift but doesn't need to make the bust look any bigger than it is. :)

I'm working on a small collection of bridal gowns that aren't based on a central corset, but are much more loosely structured, and ideally easier to wear. Thank you so much for this video, but I am confused…at first it looks like you’ve basted just the raw sew-through boning onto the lining. But when done it looks channeled? What two pieces is it channeled through? And it’s not sewn onto the lace part at all right? With no front after it was hard to tell what the finished product looked like. I would really appreciate if you could clarify because I have this alteration in a month. Her dress has no waistline, it’s a sheath mermaid style dress. I probably tried it on her raw, and then before sewing it down, I wrapped it in tulle. I really can't remember. It has been quite a while. As far as the length of boning, usually I would let her waist be my guide. The bones often stop at natural waist or 1.5 inches below her natural waist if the shorter length causes a buckling-in.

Oh! I see! No, I remember that now. I basted the boning to the inside of the lining. There were no seams to sew the boning to. Then, while the boning was held still by the basting, I sewed the boning directly to the lining with two rows of stitches on each bone. The stitches you see as I pan over the right side of the lining is not from channels that have been sewn in, but rather boning that is directly attached. This is a very rare way of sewing the boning in. Most gowns have princess seams to work with.

Would you ever put boning for support along the rows of buttons and loops up the back, in an instance like this? I have a dress very much like this situation. All net and lace in the back, buttons and loops up the back, and I thought boning along those rows might help those button loops not to strain and pop. I know it would show through slightly but that's okay, mainly I wonder if it's okay, construction wise, to do that.

You can try it, but often, it will poke up a little high at the top of the back. I have seen a manufactured gown with it. It's rare, but I've seen it.

@@BridalSewing OKay - thanks - is that because the rest of the dress sags down? Would it still do that if the dress was a sleeveless high necked halter, I wonder? There's *some* support in that there is a bodice, with shoulder seams, but it's net with lace applique so not terribly sturdy. She's a very roly poly bride and it seems to me if I can get that button line really straight and not pulling (dress is as tight as it can get) it would help in several ways. And, here's part two and it does sound weird but - I wonder, what if I put boning (and it's sewn down ridgelene, wrapped with some nude horsehair so it doesn't show through the net as much, looks fine as far as that goes) along the side with the loops ONLY. The button side would be supported by attaching to the stiff loop side if that makes sense. Is there any reason that wouldn't work? I know it's unorthodox, but it just seems to me like it might work.

Oh no. :[ You can also get a really good bustier and have it sewn it/thoroughly tacked to the dress. That works wonders & is cheaper than changing the structure of the dress.

Karolina Brzozowska I completely understand how that could be helpful to some. I do have a couple concerns with that, though. My main concern is that my viewers are very global. The pricing would literally mean nothing. Even in the U.S., labor pricing varies greatly because it swings with the local cost of living. The other problem is that I don't always itemize the bill. This project certainly wasn't. This dress was an emergency job that I quoted very high. She was out of lead time, there was no other local seamster with the skill set to fix this, and the only opening I had was a holiday that my shop was closed. I *can* say, if I were pricing only the structural changes pictured in the video, it would normally run a couple hundred dollars. (This bride also had to have the gown fit to her, hemmed, & bustled.) You are always welcome to ask about what value I would personally place on an alteration job pictured! :)

The breast pads only show small sizes. What do you suggest for large breast cups? Also, her dress has no cups or straps. She wants an off the shoulder look with sleeves. Hi!! There's so many questions you have & I don't really have a lot of detail to go on. To order different size bust cups, just click on the ones I have pictured and then modify your search. These aren't my actual supplies in store. They are Amazon links to supplies that I order for my shop. Some of them even expire as listings and then you have to re-search them out on Amazon. Bust cup sizes don't really correspond to bra sizes. I almost always use a size B push up, but sometimes- (maybe 3 times a year?) Jump to a size C for my brides.

rell whye yes, there's other descriptions down below, too. But it was basically, this: Repaired & beaded tulle with power mesh added behind. The front looked like a normal boned, supported gown. I may do a blog post on my website and include that front after picture. I actually didn't use *this* gown for the thumbnail/title image because the "before" picture wasn't appropriate for modesty reasons. Sometimes, I have to mix & match those. I'll let you know when I do a blog post. It is bridal season, afterall, and things are crazy at the shop right now. 🤣

Why did you choose an 18 needle to work with the power mesh? The bulk does not appear to need it to me.

If the fabric will withstand the needle size without getting too big of holes punched in it, I choose the 18. I personally find less thread breakage with the larger needle/eye. I think I have a video on choosing needle sizes. I usually look at more factors than fabric thickness.

No. You certainly could sew one in, but I just used rigiline sew thru boning and sewed it directly on.

I think when you are asking about the "meshy kind of boning" that you are asking about the horsehair braid. It's not a boning at all. It's a braided nylon that gives body to a seam or a hem. It's not really referred to as being strong or not. It doesn't need strength for its job, really. Boning really has some big responsibilities in terms of shaping and support, so boning does sometimes need to be quite strong.

I just found it on another of your videos. what I'm inquiring about is the rigiline sew through boning. my local fabric store used to have the opaque plastic boning (the kind where you need to put it in a boning channel), but now they only have the rigiline boning. So I'm wondering what the difference is, and if the rigiline is as strong as normal plastic boning? thx so much for your help!

@@katyb2793 oh... gotcha!! When you said mesh, it made me picture horsehair braid. (obvi. lol) I really love rigiline boning. I've not had problems with it. I love it being sew-thru. If I need it to be stronger, I just use a wider piece. If I need to keep it narrow but be stronger, I stack them. Some people use zip ties when they can't find the plastic boning to use in a channel.
