This video may help many with how to manually add channels to your Television, however if you read your destruction papers that came with your TV you would already know how to do this in the menu system of the set. A good point many may not think of though is to move your antenna to get max signal on other channels. Great Job There Tyler !

Great Video. My three year old Samsung TV doesn't do manual scans but it does show the signal strength in dB for each channel by going to the support menu. I do an auto rescan while I rotate the Antenna. This way I get the most stations then I check the signal strength and I tweak the direction of the antenna for the best signal.

You're right. The FCC repack did really mess things up. Keep in mind, I strive to see channels out of my market, which in my opinion, was considered in the repack design. Yes, FCC auctioned lots of back space, packing channels into a tight space, but they also seem to have locked in markets. VHF stations were mandated to lower power and many UHF stations were assigned the same channel, preventing reception out of the area. So far, I've been able to do what the industry tried to prevent. It's not 100%, but close. I'm going to try the above mentioned box above.

Thank you for your tutorials. Not a permanent solution, but I got 4 Fox channels back by removing one coax from a splitter and using the digital translater box to view local broadcasts. I am getting poor reception in the last 30 minutes, but before today I didn't get these chamnels. I have what you call a garbage antenna which I slide around to adjust reception. If I could, I would attatch an omnidirectional antenna tk the peak of my roof directly above my TV and drill through the wall to feed cable through to my TV. This is something now beyong my physical abilities. Finding somebody in my town to do all that for me is nearly impossible; even the few electronic places don't return my calls. At least I get a clear picture after adjusting the lousy antenna. Sorry for rambling. You've been a great help to me.

One thing that improves antenna reception on top of having a good antenna is using RG11 coaxial cable because it has less signal loss than RG6. Also RG11 is good if you have longer travel distance from your antenna to your OTA DVR/DTV Box. However I only recommend it for those who know what they are doing and have the money to spend on it because it is more expensive than RG6 cable. Also I had OTA DVR that has the same menu and signal strength status bar as your DTV box. With me I was having issues with Buzzr which is 61.3 for me and 29.4 for people living in Philly so we upgraded the our cable to RG11 which improved the signal strength immensely however at times it would go go down maybe because of the hot weather and high pressure and maybe static electricity because of how dry the day was so grounding it fixed that ordeal so I have the channel more constant for now hoping that doesn't change once summer hits.

When typing in the actual RF number and adding the subchannel number with a dash or dot, start with .3 and go up from there.. Here virtual channel 13-1, 13-2, 13-3 is actually RF channel 32-3, 32-4, 32-5. Evidently the PIDS for program numbers 1 & 2 are no longer used, so most stations start with program 3 for their dot one program and increment from there.

Not really, most television viewers are ignorant of the behind the scenes and technical aspects. Only the techy few are even aware that stations have changed frequencies from the old analog days. To make everyone aware of the change and learn the new channels every time they change is where it really becomes a hassle.

The current channel it is broadcasting on, IS the channel on the TV!!! NOTHING'S CHANGED!! 2 is still 2 Detroit, 3 is still on 3 Cleveland, 4 is still 4 Detroit, 7 is still 7 Detroit, 62 is still on 62 Detroit, 20 is still on 20 Detroit, 8 is STILL on 8 Cleveland, 43 is STILL on 43 Cleveland, 55 is STILL on 55 Cleveland, 5 is STILL on WEWS TV 5 Cleveland, 52 is STILL on 52 Castalia, 13 is STILL on 13 Toledo, 11 is still on 11Toledo, 30 is still on 30 Toledo, 24 is STILL on 24 Toledo, 36 is STILL on 36 Toledo, 61 is STILL on 61 Cleveland, 68 is STILL on 68 Mansfield, etc.,etc., The frequency it is on DOES NOT MATTER because the channel number DID NOT CHANGE. That is all that matters. Why cornfuse the situation?
@richellebrittain2127
@richellebrittain2127 3 жыл бұрын
@@haroldreyes7549 It matters in determining which channels to scan (or manually add), what antenna you need, etc. Back in analog days VHF-Lo frequencies were best, followed closely by VHF-Hi with UHF far behind. In digital it's just the opposite: UHF is best, followed by VHF-Hi, with VHF-Lo far behind. Virtual channels allowed the old-school VHF stations to keep their familiar low numbers while moving to mostly UHF RF channels that work better with ATSC. (Only two of the four analog VHF stations in my market stayed there, and one of those moved from VHF-Lo to VHF-Hi.) The biggest changes in antennas from analog to digital weren't digital itself; they were the shift from in focus from VHF to UHF (a lot of old antennas were weak in UHF or even VHF-only) and the changes in issues such as multipath interference (while merely annoying "ghosts" in analog, in digital it can push your signal off the "digital cliff" if your antenna isn't properly engineered and/or aimed).

That trick works with some ATSC tuners but not others. I used to do that with my older ATSC TVs, but my current Vizio M55Q7-H1 won't accept a forced RF 32 (the local NBC station still too weak for my new Clearstream MAX-V) by entering 32, 32-1, or even 32-0 (some older sets used -0 for analog signals). However, it does have an "add new channels" scan to pick up additional channels without losing those already detected.
@ghenulo

My TV is pretty old. I inherited it from my late father and its manufacture date is listed as 2010 (IIRC, digital TVs didn't even enter the market until 2009). If I enter "32" it goes to analog channel 32, where if I enter "32." it goes to digital channel 32. Of course, there's no actual RF channel 32 in my area, so a better example is my local RF channel 11 (CBS/Fox, which I can pick up with the the cheap indoor antenna I bought, even with the amplifier/booster turned off, as its broadcast tower is only 16 miles away); if I put in "11.", it goes to digital channel 11 and then redirects to its virtual channel, 59.1 (if I put in "11" it goes to analog channel 11 but there are no analog channels in my area; I use analog channel 4 for my VCR, but that's it).

Some coaxial cable and a antop inline signal booster with 4g filter. Can get most or all of the channels. Depending on where you are in my apartment complex apartments. I mount the flat antenna to the wall by the window and leave the vhf antenna on the window ceil . Run coaxial to the back of the TV with the signal booster attached to it. Works 6 of 10 times it tried in my personal apartment and other apartments in my building. Please note wtae Pittsburgh under 3 miles away from the apartment complex.

I have two tvs connected to one antenna on my roof. One is a TCL-Roku and the other is a Samsung. When I scan each tv I get some different channels on each. About 4-6 different ones. Both scan 38 channels. But each has a few channels that the other does not have. Any idea what is going on? I reset the TCL to factory and still got the same results. Thanks. I have learned a lot watching your videos. The best was when I first installed my antenna on the roof. I did not know about grounding antennas. But fortunately after watching your video on grounding I did ground my new antenna. A couple nights later lightning hit my antenna! My bedroom lit up like it was daytime. I actually got hit twice within a couple minutes. I could hear the crackling of the electricity. The next morning I went to inspect my roof and antenna. I expected burn marks everywhere. When I got up on the roof, it was as if nothing had happened. No sign of any burns, etc.. Thank God I followed your advice. Keep up the good job!

The problem I'm having now is most of my local channels are to the south around 174 degrees but PBS is now to the north around 5 degrees. I can get all the local channels to the south with my Channel Master 5020 100 mile antenna but it is not picking up PBS from the north. The antenna is at 25' outside which was recommended by the rabbitears website. I've contacted PBS but I don't expect them to do much. I remember what you had said earlier in one of your videos about PBS taking money from the FCC and not doing what is in the best interests of their viewers. That is true in my case as well because PBS used to have a transmitter to the south but took it out and all I have now is the transmitter to the north, which is new, and I was told by one of their technicians to point right at the station to get it. That does work for me even with the cheap antenna you tell us not to use in my attic. I tried combining the two antennas but that did not work so now I would like to put in an a/b splitter where I can just switch back and forth between the two antennas. To do this I have to have PBS channels on the TV but I can't seem to get them programed in. I tried putting in the RF number but it isn't taking it. This is a Samsung Q90R TV and you would think for what this cost I'd be able to do more with it!

You need a separate antenna for AM and FM. Both can be purchase cheaply on the internet. Just search for FM antennas and AM antennas. For FM the Stellar Lab 30-2435 works great. www.amazon.com/Stellar-Labs-30-2435-Outdoor-OMNIDIRECTIONAL/dp/B00DHHOZBI AM antennas are normally a ferrite rod wrapped with wire either internally or on the back of a radio/receiver. If your amp/receiver has the option to hook up an external AM antenna, you can buy a loop antennas. They are a small loop of wire around a plastic hoop. They are cheap. www.amazon.com/Bingfu-Antenna-Bluetooth-Receiver-Amplifier/dp/B07PNKKH97 Here is a combination external antenna. You might be able to use indoors. DX Engineering AFHD-4. It's a combination AM/FM antenna external antenna. www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?p=afhd-4 Both AM and FM antennas hook up to different ports on the back of an amp/receiver. You can even buy or make an external tunable AM loop antenna that just sits next to your radio. This is good if your radio doesn't have the option to hook up an external antenna.

It's almost 11 years since digital transition and I see that you still need an outdoor antenna to get the best reception it's like the 1950s all over. Maybe in the next 10 years will be able to receive all digital channels with the plastic antenna. Or 5G will completely replace television.

@ghenulo

You'll always need an outdoor antenna for best reception. You get better radio reception outdoors, you get better cell-phone coverage outdoors, so why wouldn't you get better TV reception outdoors? Personally, an indoor antenna is fine with me, as I can pick up most of the channels I'm actually interested in watching (it would be nice to get ABC, but according to the FCC's signal map, there's no signal for the local ABC station where I live, so I probably couldn't get it with an outdoor antenna anyway). I'm not sure how 5G would replace television. 5G is for wireless communication, not something that transmits content 24 hours a day (I'm not sure that 5G could even transmit the amount of data necessary for television). A television-like system based on 5G might be possible, but why? As the saying goes, don't reinvent the wheel unless you truly have a better wheel.
@Nicholas_Chris
@Nicholas_Chris Жыл бұрын
@@ghenulo You're lucky you can receive stations with the indoor antenna. In my case I live 30 km away from the broadcasting tower. And an indoor antenna is useless. In my area in the analog days UHF TV channels had a transmission power of 10 kW now the power transmission was reduced to 2.5 kW and only an outdoor antenna can solve the problem, plus there are trees in front of my antenna. If they only kept the same power transmission like in the analog days I could receive them with an indoor antenna. A 5G television will be similar to IPTV, but instead of ethernet and Wi-Fi you will have a converter-box that connects to 5G just like modems, Maybe the smart TVs in the future will be able to connect to 5G the same way you connect to Wi-Fi but this won't happen very soon, it will take some years maybe 10 years. Personally I don't think television will be fully replaced with 5G since North America want's to implement ATSC 3.0 and Europe is switching to DVB-T2 HEVC. Maybe 5G TV will be for premium channels so you won't have to install cables, you will need a 5G IPTV converter box and stream TV channels. But this is a theory.

You can also use Wikipedia to find the actual channel, as I found the TV sites had one station wrong, Wiki had it right. (WFXT 25 Boston was listed as rf 31, but Wiki had 34, which was right). I also noticed the Boston areas REDUCED actual power since the pack. When they repacked, one tower was at 75%, another tower at 82%, each having multiple stations on each, same strength for all stations on each tower. The 75% set went dark for a few weeks, came back at 32% permanently, the 82% were fine....then they went down for a few weeks, came back at 35% permanently. All non-Needham (MA) stations in all directions work as they always did, much stronger post-repack, same strengths after the 2 clustered towers came back weak. These two Neeham towers were repeatable on the main TV with roof antenna, so it wasn't the setup I was using. I guess they didn't want us fringe viewers after all.

The tower crews are swamped with work. I mention this in several FCC repack videos on my channel. Not many people want to climb a 1,500 foot tower to replace a giant antenna that has to be flown in by helicopter. It's very dangerous. The crews are delayed even more due to the corona virus. Please be patient the signals will come back.
@georgef551

@@AntennaMan They did go through the low-power phase awhile ago, just find it odd the 75% group suddenly went dark after the repack, came back far Seems a bit too planned to be not intended. As for the other stations, they've been good since the repack. Before the repacks, the groups were about 60% to 75% receptively, with the weaker ones in the 20s (had to be super-stable to work, rarely did).

Mine doesn't either. Silly me, not knowing that there were even signal meters, so when I got my antenna, I spent about an hour moving it around and rescanning until I found the Goldilocks zone (it's a shame I had to; I assumed I'd just be able to tuck it behind my TV and get local channels, but my TV's channel scan detected 0 channels that way).

Thanks so much, as I use my own Channel Line Up, I hate to rescan as I loose my sorting. Unfortunately I needed to ad a channel 2.1 that broadcasts on RF Channel 29. BUT there is a Virtual Channel 29 already in my channel List, so when I entered 29.1 directly, the trick would not work. By entering a Fake ".Number" For Example 29.8 I was able to bypass the already stored virtual 29.1/29.2./29.3 etc... 29.8 did not exist ;-) but it caused Samsung to recognize the desired 2.x it started with the highest Number 2.4 but once it was stored 2.1 etc was possible as well.

Also examine the cable that connects to the antenna. If old 300 ohm twinlead, the wires may be oxidized or disintegrated. If 75 ohm coax, the center copper wire may have gotten wet and is gone.

Hello, subscriber here. I have a Channel Master Flatenna Ultra-Thin TV antenna, 35 mile range. We have been extremely happy with this antenna and up until today, received 56 channels. However, this morning, we’ve lost many channels, now having only 31! Do you have any ideas? I performed several automatic rescans to no avail. My favorite channel MeTV, channel 4.3 Detroit, is gone. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

In the process of 'cutting the cord' and purchased the Clear Stream 2 Max Indoor/Outdoor antenna. Playing with placement right now- outside is better, need to face NE (I'm in 19063 zip code and majority of towers are in Roxborough in Philly ~ 11-12 miles away.) We get every station we want to watch EXCEPT PBS/39. WLVT-TV RF channel 9. Tower is in Allentown PA only 45 miles in same direction.This antenna is supposedly good for a 60 mile radius.The RF channels being picked up are missing 7-9 when I use the antenna. I don't understand why this channel is not picking up, but I do notice on AntennaWeb it's associated with the coded Violet color which requires a 'large directional w/ preamp'. So, I guess I'm stuck not getting one of my favorite channels unless I want to buy a much larger antenna.
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 2 жыл бұрын
I've been in this position. The issue is that the signal of WLVT is weak. You may have to try different locations for the antenna or point it directly towards Allentown. If you still don't get it you may need a larger antenna. For what it's worth you can live stream WLVT PBS 39 for free on the PBS app on Roku.

Antenna Man Tyler I have a question that doesn’t relate to this. During this repacking have they done something with the sound? In just the last few months I have noticed that most of the newscasters on just about every channel smack their lips as they begin to talk. It is absolutely an epidemic. For me it is annoying. I have not seen this until this year. In fact I watch CBS and NBC at different times depending who is reporting the news because I know which ones are the lip smackers.

I have a Hisense Roku TV. I only want to add and scan one manual channel, CBS. It seems like the Mediasonic recommended here is: 1. Overkill for my purposes (I am not looking for recording) and 2. Like it might not even work, because if I move my antenna all over the place I’m going to lose my original channels. Am I missing something? Plus, 3. It gets a fair number of bad reviews on Amazon. Maybe it’s a gray market product, because Amazon has a terrible time controlling counterfeits and gray market items.
