How to Add Vintage Embroidery Pieces to a Crazy Quilt Square

Adding vintage linens to your crazy quilting doesn't only add beautiful details to your quilt, but it also memorializes any treasured handmade or hand embroidered pieces passed down to you by your mother or ancestors.
And, if you don't know how to hand embroider, this is an ingenious way to still include embroidery in your quilt! You can pick up vintage embroidered linens (dish towels, pillow cases, etc) at thrift shops and online from places like Ebay.

Thank you so much for this. I've been interested in crazy quilting for several years now, and have made some squares that are silk and velvet little pieces, and then I want to embellish them too. I never knew about pressing down the edges first. I would just iron the pieces. This would make such clean edges and with stitching by hand, it's all easier to control. I want to incorporate some of my Mom's treasures too. That's a lovely thought. I just had to sub to you. What you're doing is right up my alley!! I'm going to start out with a wall hanging first. That's not so overwhelming!

Since the heritage fabrics are older and tend to break down, what do you feel about backing them with a fusible stabilizer prior to using them in a quilt?

Since there is the foundation fabric, I don't use a stabilizer, but if you feel the need for extra strength, a fusible backing may be something to consider.
