How To: Adding Color to Laser Engraved Magazines

In this video we show you how to prepare a magazine with color dye so that when the laser is applied the desired color will show. This process will also work if the magazine has already been hit with the laser, we will show that in another video.
In this video we are using a ‪@SA_Laser‬ PolyMetal 30 Fiber Laser.
** DISCLAIMER **
It's important to note that OUR settings will not transfer to YOUR laser unless you also have a PolyMetal 30 laser from ‪@SA_Laser‬ in which case, you have access the same settings options as we do.
These lasers are set up to SALE's specifications, so giving away settings will yield entirely different results for other manufacturers.
We recommend setting up a test grid on whatever medium you are going to mark and trying about 5-7 passes at a time to determine appropriate settings that work best for you.

Thanks for the video. Have you tried it with different colors? I would love to do this, but I'm wondering if purple is too dark.

We haven't tried purple yet but we've seen other videos that work with different colors as well. I think it's a lot of trial and error as it is with most things we do with laser engraving!

Would you share the setting you used on the laser? There is a lot of info out there but trying to replicate your process the settings would be nice.

These settings were provided with the laser upon purchase. We can not ethically give them out since we didn't do the work to figure it out ourselves.

We don't add anything after the laser process to make the magazines shine

So I have my gray tan and white settings figured out on my laser for normal black pmags. I would not ask for your settings as I understand your statement of it being unethical. But could you answer this question possibly. If not I understand. Are my settings for colors I have achieved similar to the type of seetings/process you use on the mag after it is dyed to bring out the dyed color?

Will this only work with fiber lasers? Or can this be done with something like a diode?

We only have a fiber, not sure whether or not it will work on other types.

Remove the bottom plate and spring before dying the magazines!

So do you put it into the hot dye and then rinse it?

Correct, we got the water good and hot (less than a simmer though) then added dye, soaked magazines for 10-15 minutes with heat on low.

How durable is the image and the color?
