March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility, so I have seized the opportunity to make this video for my students who wondered how to address a transgender or non-binary person respectfully in French, when the language is gendered in only masculine and feminine.

In French people usually address me as Madame. I am a nonbinary person who does not care what pronouns people use as long as they are polite. In English we have the pronouns They/Them. That is fine. If a person is not sure saying something like "Can I help you folks" if they are part if a cople or group entering a shop. If they are by themselves say "What can I get you friend?" Also works. The best thing is, look at the nametag of the person if they have one and just call them by that name. "Thank You George, please come by again" is much better than searching for a genral pronoun.

These are great tips! Thank you so much for sharing them. In French we don't really have an equivalent to the neutral pronoun they in the singular (or in the plural either). we have "iel" but it's too new and too few people use it.

Yes a conundrum. I know this is an issue. This idea won’t address what you are saying but I would like the terms masculine and feminine given new names, at least for nouns.

I agree. It is quite disturbing that grammar concepts are called the same thing as human genders.

Bonjour Angel, j'ai voulu voir la vidéo que tu recommandes à la fin de celle-ci, malheureusement je ne peux pas la soutitrer en français (c'est une vidéo un peu ancienne), et comme tu connais mon haut niveau d'anglais.... Dommage !

C'est probablement aussi parce qu'elle est très longue. C'est dommage, parce que pouvoir rendre la langue française neutre, ça n'est pas facile, même pour les natifs.
