I’m always apprehensive when it comes to messing with important things like my brakes. Especially when its the steer axle brakes. I hate it when I break something and have to spend big bucks fixing my mistake. I watched this video and it was very helpful. My brakes were way out of adjustment. The rest of them are okay because I know how to adjust them. It was the brakes on the steer axle that I was unsure about. Thanks for the help your video gave me.

The on going debate between the 1/4 turn and the 1/2 turn continues.
@rowe4x44 жыл бұрын
Generally a half turn. But sometimes quarter turn is enough. Depending on your slack, and the condition your shoes/drums. Basically just enough to free spin. I prefer to do them up off the ground of if I can. I'm a mechanic, not a driver.
@LAHPLOCO4 жыл бұрын
@@rowe4x4 1/4 of turn 1/2 of turn won't matter, those are automatic adjust slack adjuster, when adjusting the breakes you are only gettinge them close enough to adjust by itself after driving 10'
@matthewmase35493 жыл бұрын
@@LAHPLOCO but you can literally tell the slack adjust how you want them to tighten. call me the slack wisperer. depending on the mounting of the arm, (depending on the type of slack adjuster) or the angle of the yolk on a two pin style slack. that sets up where the slack will adjust. and you are right though about adjusting the auto slack. only time you should is when you do brakes because if you need to adjust it something has failed and legally needs to be replaced
@justinmuir96016 жыл бұрын
Yup you can back the steer brakes off a 1/4 turn if you like the smell of burning brakes and trying to fly the next time you got to hit the brakes hard if they aint burnt off by then Or you could just back the brakes off a 1/2 turn when you adjust your steer brakes and avoid the smell and not fly when you got to hit the braks hard

Do you need the brakes released to adjust the front same as you would do for the rest of the truck and trailer
@power351293 жыл бұрын
2 things you forgot to to tell . One you need to chalk the wheel's 2 the brakes has to be released on which other one your settings the brakes on truck or trailer to get the proper setting . The rest is pretty much right 👍

Also you don't need to release the front brakes as they don't have an emergency spring. lefty loosy righty tighty works on the adjuster too so you don't wear out the Paul. once adjusted you want to apply brakes 6 times for the slack to auto adjust. this is the proper way you forgot to mention.

I have a 1987 Toyota one ton pickup chassis with a motor home built on it!!! 4 clyinder, automatic trans, rear wheel drive with a proportional valve in the back. The left fronf wheel locks up and skids. With light braking. But the truck does not stop very well! I put a new master clyinder on because it was leaking.. Also put a new vacuum booster. Still the front break locking up, then put new pads and calipers up fromt!!! Still not stopping. The I just put a new proportional valve and now it still locks up and hardly stops. When I bleed the brakes I get fluid out of the proportional valve. But now I don't get any fluid out of the bleeders on the drum brakes. What should I do???? Larry How do you adjust the valve????

@@jcramirez2233 the allowable stroke length varies depending on which size chamber you have. So if it's a chamber that's allowed 1 3/4 inch travel that's the max allowed. It can have less travel just not more. Some chambers are allowed 2" of travel some 2.5" etc.. so make sure you know what size chamber you have.

Do you hear that constant air leak when the brake pedal was pressed? Ya that is also normal too..... NOT! As accurate as this info may have been..... it is terrible info for a few fundamental reasons. It amazes me that automatic slack adjusters have been the law for twenty years now and people still make this many mistakes about them.
@jake30406 жыл бұрын
its not a 1/4 turn, and its also different for all slacks and brakes, first this is assuming the slack is working, then all you do is tighten it up all the way then back it off so that when you make a brake application the pushrod and slack make a 90 degree angle, if you do what this genius is telling you to do your brakes will be so tight they'll either burn up or send you through the windshield, and another thing unless its your own truck please dont touch the brakes if you dont know what your doing, for the love of god have a brain.
