In this video I show how to adjust linear pull caliper brakes and brake pads. The brakes are also know as v-brakes, but this name was coined by Shimano and refers a specific type of brake which is slightly different than the more common linear pull caliper brakes.
Thanks for watching

I grew up throwing bike parts together and fixing my own bikes. Have not ridden in 30 years and just picked a couple bikes for me and the wife. Brake calipers are a lot more sophisticated then they used to be. Your tutorial was a lifesaver.

Sorry to sound like a broken record, but... Man! This video is like a breath of fresh air. By far the most thorough, well explained, no B.S. video I have ever seen. You saved me from an S-load of frustration I got from being in the dark about many of the details you plainly laid out. Thank you, sir!

Just getting back into biking, so I found this really helpful. I bought a 1988 GT Avalanche and I'm putting it together. So much to be learned about bikes but it's very satisfying to be able to do this work oneself.

This video is excellent and will help you get your brakes in order. Make sure you test your brakes before going on your first ride on any Walmart bike. The particular Walmart I got my Roadmaster Granite Peak 26" at, is really terrible at assembling bikes. They are either lazy or they're under tremendous pressure to throw them together. Also make sure your handlebars are tight. I took a test drive on their patio, the steering wheel went sideways on me and I crashed. Long story short the bike I eventually got had brake pads that were misaligned and this guy is saving me !

Your two videos on this model of bike helped me to put it together today and begin adjustments by myself despite the uselessness of the instruction booklet. The brake adjustment will be a challenge, but at least now I have an idea of how to adjust the sensitive front brake so I don't toss myself into the bushes. Thank you.

Only into the video a short time and I have learned more from this than a whole bunch of other videos I have watched. I have a new Schwinn Meridian from Amazon and your video was a big help. Thank you. Now I need a video that shows how to install the derailer because mine was laying on the bottom of the box when I first opened the box. Bike manual does not cover this.

awesome, very detailed. I had one extra good advice at a workshop that I once followed: if you detach a breakpad, do one at a time, so that, if you forget the order of the washers, you can still see the right order at the other breakpad.

Great tutorial! One suggestion is to adjust the point of front brake lockup as close to the handlebar as you can keeping in mind the individual that will be riding it. Do NOT lockup the brakes too early as that will send you over the top of the handlebars quicker than you can blink an eye!

thx. Exactly what i needed to learn. My bike mecanic or bike shop did not have enough patience with the brakes on my bike (because my bike is a cheap bike, and the mecanic had other customers). So, i need to learn how to fix the brakes myself. Of course, knowing how to tighten the spokes comes before adjusting the brakes.

Adjusting the breaks like in this video is the hardest part of a low-wage bike assembly job. If you're a beginner this is a good reference/guide for that. Learning how to do the tightening and loosening of the spring screws is important and easy to forget.

I'm trying to install a new brake line on a rear linear brake, and I'm following your directions, and others I've watched, and every time, the calipers go in when you press the lever but won't come back out, and the ferrule keeps falling out of the lever. I give up. I do not understand what that's happening. Unthreaded the calipers move freely.

Hard to say from your post. Check the spring tension, it may be too loose not allowing the caliper arms to return.

What is the "cable noodle bracket" and the "pinch bolt" ? ( 00:48 )
@joelwisman
@joelwisman 4 жыл бұрын
Mathieu Clerté the cable noodle is the metal housing that makes a 90 degree turn at the end of the brake cable housing. The pinch bolt is the bolt that pinches the brake on the opposite brake arm that the noodle notches into.

If you release the cable and the caliper spring you should be able to re-insert the screw. Not good to leave it aout as cann cause imbalance.

Make sure your wheel is true and attached correctly, than use the spring tension screws on the caliper for finer adjustments and make sure the pads are aligned correctly.

This is better or disc brakes?
@Paul-mz6ss
@Paul-mz6ss 4 жыл бұрын
Both are excellent if you are using quality components, (Supermarket bikes do not use quality components). Generally rim brakes are sharper, however hydraulic disc are the best in all weather conditions. The demonstration at the end of the video where the cyclist almost goes head over the handlebars (stoppie) is a disc brake bike.
