I wish I'd seen this 2 years ago. I did all of mine with a retired mechanic and while he worked on lots of antique cars in his collection, he'd never touched a G503 before. Let's just say it took a while

A very nice clear explanation. I just replaced a leaky wheel cylinder and adjusted the brakes following your video and the jeep pulled up straight and square! Many thanks........

Excellent instructional video Scott. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together. I wish I could have seen this a few years ago. It took awhile to figure out on my own how to do this accurately. It's well worth the time to do a Major Adjustment for the most efficiency.

Thank you! My 47 CJ2A brakes have never been right and now I know why. My mechanic adjusted them when I bought it and he obviously didn't know what he was doing. I have been very skeptical of letting my daughter drive it anywhere, but on flat ground. Now, I won't worry when she is home from law school and wants to take it for a spin!

Seems like those tolerances would all be lost after a few miles of driving. I've always just gone by the "small bit of drag" method, and called it good. (maybe that's why nobody wants to ride with me???) Thanks for the vid!

And that would be the minor adjustment. I have newly turned original brake drums, still in spec. like i said in the vid.....they will stop on a dime.

I don't use a flashlight......I took a black marker and put a mark on the backing plate (a little line) to where the shoe is to be measured. Now I know exactly when the slot is to be when I stick my feeler gauge in.

Great tutorial. Great series. That "x", does it mark the heaviest part of the drum? That would allow the slot to be cut without upsetting the drum's balance...

Very nice video thanks. I noticed that the new drums you get nowadays do not have the slot in them anymore. Is it advisable to cut your own slot?

I bought a used Snap On brake adjustment wrench on eBay for $38. Worth its weight in gold! Must have to do it right. Theres no slots in my drums so the feeler gauge was out. Do you have a work around for that? I just adjusted it so the rear shoe was dragging a little then backed it off until it wasn't. same with front shoe but a tiny bit more backing off. They work fine with no pulling. How about a video on the handbrake?

Thanks! I have an International Scout 80 (~’65 model) and did not know how to do this. I will read comments below but assume you cut the slot in the drum? If so I will just use my air cut off tool to do so on mine. Thanks again!
@johngibbins5587
@johngibbins5587 3 жыл бұрын
Slots were in all WW2 jeep brakes. And your International scout does not have the same type bottom anchor brakes so are not adjusted as in this video but will have duo servo brakes that have a bottom central adjuster. Later models would have self adjusters.

@TeamG503

The wrench I made is from a regular 3/4 inch box end, open end wrench. I heated it, bent it into shape and ground it to make it thinner. I made it to make this job a breeze. You can do the same with a 3/4 offset wrench out of the box. They are available everywhere, including harbor freight 👍

@chuckwatford2952

According to the TM that I am reading, you are turning the eccentrics the wrong way. "Place wrench on eccentric so that handle is up, and turn wrench handle toward wheel rim."
@TeamG503
@TeamG503 5 жыл бұрын
Chuck Watford I promise you, how I show in the video, the brakes stop on a dime. The rotation of the eccentric is towards the rim, essentially speaking.
