Thanks! Had to change the hand brake lever. So your video helped me know how to take off the console cover to get at it.

Thank you for posting. Very helpful. This is the correct way to do this so that you may use full-sized tools. I chose to go through the change cup/mirror control. A very tight work area and you must use small tools. I adjusted the brake in 15 minutes, but then dropped the tiny wrench and it fell down into an impossible location. Took an hour to get it out. So, pick your poison on which way to do this.

You can squeeze a small deep socket down the side of the handbrake to adjust it without taking the armrest out.

Great video, thanks for posting this! I followed your video and was able to adjust my cable tension which was way too loose after replacing the brake shoes and hardware.

Thanks a lot, really helpful! Anyone can do it, I recommend trying it before going to the mechanic, it literrally took me 10minutes.

Thank you for the video. This was very helpful. I was able to adjust mine but my issue is that even with the lever down the parking brake seems to stay on and the rear brakes stick just a little. The vehicle doesn't roll in neutral and after a test drive the rear rotors are hotter than the front ones. Any idea on how to get it to completely disengage?

Many thanks for the video, mine is a RAV4 2008 and the cable is different, I could adjust per hand(!) but I am not so sure, is it all I have to do? No other adjustment on the rear wheel or so?

Also please adjust by rear Brake Shoes adjusting bolt. Look my new video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqSkhnaQapKad6s

Looks simple enough. I thought I had to crawl under the rear axle to do it, so this makes me very happy!

I did it; so easy. Saved me a trip to the mechanic. (I was using it as an excuse to not change my own oil, but it was so easy, I changed my oil right after)! Yay.....two things checked off my list!

My rear brakes squeak all the time when driving. The rear brake drums and shoes were replaced by a previous owner not too long ago. I took the car to a mechanic who cleaned the drake drums and rear brake pads with cleaner and lightly sanded both the drum and pads. Unfortunately with some driving, it appears that the brakes heat up with use and the squeaking is louder. I have noticed that the hand brake lever is very tight to pull up. Could it be that when the new brakes were installed on the rear that the park brake cable is now too tight for the new rear brake brims and causing it to drag and heat up? I really enjoy your videos. Thanks for providing them.

It is possible to over-tighten the shoes to the point that the tires will smoke on a long trip. Check the temperature of your rotors after a trip. The front rotors should be hotter than the rear when the brakes are working correctly. Don't use your fingers or you might burn them. Laser pointer thermometers work best.

Did you ever find out what the issue was? Mine is doing the same. Drum brakes squeaking when hot and very irritating.

much easier to just remove the coin tray on the console which gives you easy access to adjust. no need to take your car apart that far. mine is 2011

I just replaced the spring assembly on my 2004 Rav4, and previous to the parts replacement, my parking brake did work fine, but now it doesn't. Do I have to adjust the parking brake from the inside with the cable tension or do I have to re adjust the parking brake with the star wheel between the brake shoes?
