your guitar setup tutorials are just amazing. Straight to the point with no fancy equipment required. I really had a hard time figuring out truss rods adjustments when I started learning the guitar because all the tutorials I could find required rulers and loosening the strings, not to mention how they make adjusting the truss rod sound too terrifying because of how often they mention 'breaking your guitar'. It took me years to collect enough courage to do more than just one turn to finally set the neck up correctly. Thank you so much!

Dude, what a great, thorough and easy to understand video. I've been playing for a long time and the truss rod has always been something that has been a mystery to me and all instructional things I've ever read or watched have made it sound so much more complicated that by the time I was done I barely knew the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise. Your presentation is so helpful .Thank you and great job!! 👍

Absolutely spot on tutorial Rob as always 👏 However, and not trying to encroach, just as a precaution for any newbs, and inexperienced individuals, only adjust 1/4 turns at a time, even with on guitar's with a huge neck relief situation, at least until you become more experienced at knowing how much the truss rod adjustment affects the guitar you are setting up 👍🤘

Well. Here i am yet again watching setup vids at 10pm lol. I’m getting some dead spots on that MH I just got. I automatically went and raised the bridge. That resolved some spots but around the 12th fret it’s dead.

I like to start with truss rod adjustments, then move onto bridge height adjustments if necessary. It's a balancing act between the two. But if I can avoid adjusting the bridge, I will. Sometimes though, the guitar tells you what it wants, and you must oblige!
@adamkahn8645
@adamkahn8645 Жыл бұрын
Also, I don’t know if many people think about this. Say I run 9s on my guitar but wanna have slightly tighter treble strings, so I put a 9.5 and 12.5. By using the string tension calculator that SJ supplies, put your string gauges in and the tuning you are using. Write down the total tension number at the bottom. Then change the treble strings to the gauges you are putting on now. Check that total tension number. This will help you gauge just how much adjustment your truss rod will need to get it back setup to where it was originally

Do you have any vids about adjusting a fixed bridge afterwards? I lowered my bridge years ago and then haven't touched this guitar in years. Just took it out and noticed the relief has run wild. I assume if you straighten it out and are getting crazy buzzing or dead spots on a particular side, then raise that side until it stops? Or is it better to raise the bridge uniformly? It's a tune-o-matic on an older mh-400nt. Thanks for all the vids man! One of the most entertaining and useful guitar channels out there.
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 5 ай бұрын
Thanks man! You can certainly make height adjustments from your bridge, but I like to do that after I've set my neck. Over time, the neck is the thing that will change based on it's environment, where the bridge, being metal, should always be where you left it. After your guitar has sat awhile, if you go to play it and the action has changed, you'll want to address that with the neck first. After that, you can fine tune things or address trouble areas by making bridge height adjustments. I like to adjust each side uniformly if possible, and then individually if necessary. The whole process is a balancing act, and even the most minor adjustments have an effect on the outcome. With patience and persistence, your guitar can be strumming nicely again in no time!🎸

@@RobArnoldWorld ok sweet, good to know. Ya last time I did this I mostly knew what I was doing but not fully 😂 hence why I started from the bridge. I think that you can take it a little further! Certainly to where you'd like it to be, which should be with a slight amount of relief. Just barely noticeable is how I like it. And by "snug", I assume you mean that there's some resistance, which is to be expected. But if it's nearing un-turnably tight, then you've gone too far.

Great video! Always had question marks about touching "that part" of the guitar. Nicely explained, plain and simple. I remember that Viper from another video where you whistled as a reaction to it's awesome tone after you made the setup. You made BokuSenpai, one of your subscribers buy a Viper with that whistle:) This one is that Viper, am I correct? It's a shame that he replaced the pickups though, the tone was amazing! Anyway it's all about the taste. Great content!
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 2 жыл бұрын
Haha awesome! I hope Boku loves his Viper! And yes, this is the guitar! It's also the Viper I used in Chimaira's very first video, "Sp Lit". So you didn't like the tone from the end of the video with the Fat 55's?
@ozan.arslan
@ozan.arslan 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobArnoldWorld Yes, I remember that too! Well, of course I liked it, still a kick ass tone, also the guitar itself is a thing of beauty, with that shiny blue color. But the previous tone was majestic, it was BRUTAL. Made both of us whistle just like you did :) I am a lefty, the life is hard when you obsess about guitars and be a lefty at the same time! Otherwise I would have also gone with a Viper, all because of that video of you set up this gorgeous guitar.

Thanks Adam! Happy to hear it! Every time I have a guitar set up by ESP, I say this... "Drop C, 11-52, with a nice low action". And that's how I receive em'! Nothing technical about it. (in terms of actual measurements). It's just a feel/look thing for me. Same with the pickup height... I try and get it close to the strings, but not close enough to impede in any way whatsoever. I also keep the treble side slightly higher than the bass side on my pickups, with hopes that leads will stand out a little more when playing live. 🎸

First time I made intonation after your video :). I had made the low action through the bridge unlike truss-rod, I didn't trust myself on truss-rod :D. Before your video's release, I hope I didn't mess up everything, but I did intonation after that, they are in tune now, I wonder If I sacrificed some sustain, after doing this way, because I had to move each 6 string holders about 2mm's to the left when guitar sits like yours to be able to intonate 12th frets. :). EDIT: Loose strings and remove springs, then adjust the tremolo height with spuds.

Was having buzzing above the twelfth fret on the low e and a strings. Tightened the truss rod and it just made the buzzing spread to all the frets on those strings. Not really sure what to do
@RobArnoldWorld
@RobArnoldWorld 4 ай бұрын
Tighten the truss lowers your action (distance from the strings to the fret board), and increases the potential for fret buzz. So you'll want to back off your truss rod a little, and perhaps even consider raising your bridge a bit. But first, I'd start with loosening your truss and seeing what happens.
@EdEddnEddyMercury
@EdEddnEddyMercury 4 ай бұрын
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks so much for the reply! I loosened the truss rod and raised the bridge a bit and now I’ve got no more buzzing. The action is noticeably higher than it was before but it’s still comfortable to play.

Hi Rob. Glad you said it's possible to do this from the truss rod only. I had my guitar tuned over lockdown, and even though they tuned it great, the action of the strings felt really slack, so while this may suit low playing guitarists, when it came to playing fast palm muted metal songs for example, it felt really loose and just didn't feel the same. I've just kind of lived with it for a couple of years, but when you can't play certain things the same you could before you have to make that change. For your sound have you always had this tuned how you have it on this vid, or did you ever play it with a tighter action to get your crunching sound when palm muting? I met you in Leeds UK in 2004 at a signing, which subsequently after seeing you I pulled the plug and got my first guitar which was the ESP I am using to this day as the guitars just sounded exactly how I wanted mine to sound. Weirdly I actually wanted to ask you this very question at the sign in but wasn't something you could or would want to answer in the middle of hundreds of people wanting an autograph.

Awesome man! I remember some good shows in Leeds! And glad to hear your ESP has treated you well for all these years! Personally, I prefer a lighter gauge and higher tuning. My sweet spot is drop C, with 11-52's. I've got tons of other videos describing that setup if you're interested! Cheers and thanks for tuning in!🤘

@@RobArnoldWorld thankyou Rob, glad the North of England has some good memories for you. I will certainly check out the rest of your videos and picking up some more pointers. Thankyou for the reply and also for the memories. What a time to be alive where you can hear from someone you grew up listening to over 20 years ago, really appreciate it.

Hello,which wrench of truss rod is best for my fender cv 70s bass? 3/16 is too big obviously, and 4mm is a little bit loose , it almost makes me crazy😢 thanks

Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with that instrument, so I can't say. I recommend a multi tool allen wrench set like this, which should have any wrench you need for any job! amzn.to/3QglsQs

Hey Rob! Cool video, However, is it true that you need to keep the guitar down for the day or night on the lowest possible tune after adjusting truss rod? My schecter hellraiser fell from my chair face down, and the string action went damn low, literally stuck to the fretboard, I turned the truss rod anti clockwise 2 3 times, and also adjusted the bridge a little and it sounded like an angel, but my guitarists friends told me to immediately put the guitar strings on the lowest tune or completely loose for the night or 2, or else it might damage my guitar. Is this true? Zaain

Hey Zaain- I've never heard of having to relieve tension across the neck for a day or two as you described... But I also can't really say or offer much advice without actually seeing your guitar myself, and assessing what might have happened to it. Does it have a bolt-on neck? Because from what you described, it almost sounds like your neck may have gotten displaced or something from the body.

Your NOT supposed to adjust string height with the truss rod!
@y2kcurran
@y2kcurran 7 ай бұрын
Yea, there were quite a number of red flags in this for me...but there are probably more than one way to skin a cat. I can see scenarios where this would help. I guess it's everyone's responsibility to learn ALL the options of adjustment, the impact of those, and to choose where they like to focus on. I tend to set relief first, then action if needed with the bridge.

Yeah in most cases you can just adjust the height with the truss... unless you went full retard and messed up saddle/bridge height.
