Hey Rob. Do you have an answer for this. ? This process won't work while using a BASS TUNER APP versus a tuner that you plug from guitar to tuner OR should it matter? That's what I use A TUNER APP that I think works great for me. But I can't get a reading off any of the strings from the 12th fret pluck like in your video. But no big deal because I tinkered with it for a hr or more and it sounds better , plays better and smoother, and my pickup switch is working correctly again

Hey man- I would assume it would work with a bass tuner, especially on a bass, but I can't be sure without seeing it myself. And that's weird that you can't get a reading on the 12th fret. The higher the pitch, the more a tuner usually likes a note!

Finally! A source/video on intonation that actually made setting intonation easy to understand! I've done all work on my guitars, but properly setting intonation has always escaped me! Rob you never disappoint. They are a bunch of videos with this topic and many other guitar topics and all the other videos just don't cut it for me. With robs videos its a whole different ball game. One thing I always do when doing a setup is I always tune up to the note when tuning. I never tune down to pitch ,I've found that doing that can give you a false tune . Just what I do. Great vid as always brother 👍

Learned a tuning trick the other day on KZbin, When you're trying to perfectly tune when intonating for instance, Switch to the neck pickup and lower the tone knob on the guitar just about 10% Somehow this gives a much better reading on digital tuners, as if there's less "noise" interfering the signal of the pickup or something like that. Oh and thanks for the video! helped me a LOT.

Even though I'm familiar with adjusting intonation, I still like watching videos like this. It's a good refresher, at least. I have the same guitar, but the 2020 model. I ended up swapping out the Fishmans for the EMG 81/60 combo. Shoot, my low E dances around perfect and I'm tuned to E flat with 11-52 strings. That's on my EC-1001, though. My M-1000 lives in D and drop C, occasionally, and it seems to be a little more stable with tuning.

@@RobArnoldWorld Yeah, they're pretty nice, especially the Eclipse. I've been an ESP/LTD fan for many years now. They just have a nice fit and finish to them and have a good feel to them. My Eclipse was a B-stock, so I got it for a good price. I put a GraphTech nut on both guitars and what an improvement.

I did the same with my Schecter SLS Elite Evil Twin. It came with Fishman Fluence Moderns but I just really did not dig the sound of them. Had them swapped for the EMG 81/60 and it sounds much better now. Fishmans are great pickups but I feel they're a bit overrated.

@@patrickolivier1 Yeah, I tried the Fluence Modern pickups for about 6 months before I changed them out for my go-to EMG 81/60 combo and I immediately heard a drastic difference. EMGs just have a nasty snarl about them, especially the 81, and I love the bluesy sound of the 60. The 60 is quite killer in the bridge, too.

One thing I’ve noticed when doing set ups, if you roll your tone knob down, and use the neck pup. You’ll get more accurate reading on the tuner. I mean I use a Peterson strobe tuner for my set ups, just cause how accurate they are, and with me using 7 strings and low tunings it really helps with the wound strings. Another thing that helps is backing the pick ups down a bit. It helps with not getting those blips you mentioned. Killer vid bro

5:38 a note is a certain frequency, so the string produces that frequency. Lower frequencies equal longer wavelengths and vice versa. That's why a low pitch instrument, like a bass, has a longer scale length (obviously string tension is also a factor). But that basically means, if it is sharp, you have to elongate the measure and if it's flat you have to shorten the measure (basically "stretching" and "squeezing" the wave). :)

when lowering the pitch, you should pass the middle a little, and then give it a tiny tug. then tune it UP to pitch. it will help since theres no locking nut ;)

Very good video! I've been intonating my guitars on my own for ages, but I always forget which way to adjust the saddles. That "chase the needle" hint will stick, seriously good advice. Regarding the lower strings, have you considered tuning by harmonic overtones? You can strike the 5th, 7th and/or 9th fret harmonic and tune that, then strike the octave at 17th, 19th and/or 21st fret and see how well they are in tune. I find those much more consistent than the loose and wobbly open low strings.

And yes, I'll often take a look at various harmonic overtones as well, and I like to try and take the average between the open, the fretted 12th, and the natural harmonics!

I'll say this tho MY WASHBURN BASS wasn't very far off. And I set my action up after I learned how OFF A VIDEO SIMILAR a couple years ago..( before I would let a local SEASONED ) work on my stuff. I would like some wiring info for an ACTIVE EMG setup. I have an late 80s or early 90s WASHBURN ABT with a 9v pot in the body.

Great video! Often overlooked, intonation is just as important as any other aspect of setup/ maintenance. I can't tell you how many used guitars I come across that have all the saddles in a perfect line, a tell tale that they didn't intonate the guitar. It's sad because they probably gave up on the instrument without the guitar ever being set up properly and allowed to shine. I just got an Ibanez bass for $100 used that had a terrible setup with high action, a couple high frets, improper intonation, and fret sprout. The guy hated the bass and I probably could have talked him into giving it to me for free. I set it up with the used strings for proper relief, action, and intonation and played it for about 2 weeks to assess the fret needs. I ended up doing a full fret level , crown, and polish and I filed and rounded the fret ends and rolled the fingerboard edge. Finished up with new strings and setup + intonation and I have a gigable $100 bass. I absolutely enjoy the process of bringing an instrument back to life that is so close to being thrown away. The neck is SOOOO comfortable now and the bass really shines. I know it's better than it was new. I get that maintenance is for everyone, and if it's not, that's fair... just make sure your gear gets visits to a qualified tech that will make it all that it can be.

(Yes, I know the app probably isn't as accurate as the real thing, but it's what I have.) Setting the intonation was a bit of a pain in the ass cuz it's my first time & the heavier strings are harder to set, just like you said, but I FINALLY got green lights for both the open string and the fretted 12th fret on all 6 strings, so that's good enough for me! Aye aye eye ... !!! If a string is sharp, the string needs to be lengthened to flatten it. Conversely, if the note is flat, the string needs to be shortened. So making a string longer makes it flatter, while making it shorter makes it sharper.Jan 7, 2016 Way simple.

I have mine setup with. 8s to 38, I was thinking 8,5s to 42 to have a thicker 6th, but 38 works fine. before that I went the extra mile to try out 7s to 36 which was very fun to bend 2 steps effortless, BUT I did smash that D string a bit too hard playing surfing with the alien so it broke during a pretty nasty scream where I used my 2.5mm and dug into the note lol. I loved 7s so 8s are the stronger alternative, will try 7s again som day when I just want to do crazy bends, and the strings play them self on 7s 🤭

Strings are pretty much playing them self with such light gauge. .07s is also very fun to play on, but you have to play very carefully on .07s because the lighter gauge the easier they break, but 8 and 8,5 is perfect for me at least. I like .09s too which i have on my telecaster, but the bends are far easier to do on the .08s and on .07 you can easily bend 2-3 whole steps 😲 What gauge do you use? I'm guessing .10 or .11? Some prefer 0.13 gauge which is not wrong at all, but a little heavy for my taste. I have tried a baritone guitar that had :.014 - .068 gauge, which made a very fat sound on the 6th string which makes those guitars awesome for heavy metal! :)

In what way are you struggling? Perhaps I can help. And remember, it's the principals that are important, and the method should be applied to each string in the same way. So you wouldn't treat one string differently than another, when it comes to intonating the strings.

@@RobArnoldWorld thanks, I have 2 more electric guitars I do not have a problem for intonation but got a Schecter - Nick Johnston Traditional recently and the E string is still a little high on 12 frets there seems to be no space left to tighten the screw and make the length of string longer, I even changed strings but still same. A few cents higher and perhaps I am a perfectionist :)

@@persiaguitar I understand, and I've run into the same issue before too. From one perfectionist to another, it is a frustrating scenario. While i don't have a sure-fire solution, all I can say is that somewhere in the mechanics of it all, one component of your setup isn't playing nicely with another. It could be the relationship between your tuning, and the string gauge. Or one of those things, and your neck relief. Or your tuning and your scale length. etc. There are many variables. And if you have the time, I recommend experimenting relentlessly. And eventually, the guitar should tell you what it likes. From there you can begin to figure out how to manipulate things in a way so that you're both happy. Good luck!

@@persiaguitar Had this problem in 2 guitars and returned them, it may be badly placed bridge, so I don't want to work with that on a new instrument. Sometimes it's a high nut that can cause this, so a luthier can help with that. Also, you can try to lower your string action, because it makes intonation more "flat", but only if you have spare space until strings start to buzz :) And if I remember correctly, you can try to make your neck more straight using truss rod, which basically makes strings a tiny bit longer.

General rule of thumb is if the fretted note is sharp, then the saddle needs to be moved back. If the fretted note is flat, the saddle needs to be moved forward. Flat, forward -- sharp, back. I always have to tell myself this when adjusting intonation, lol. 😁

@Booty McNasteez Since your saddles are IN your bridge, you wouldn't really want to say it the way you've said it. Instead, think of it in the same way, but use the guitars NECK or pickups as a point of reference. If sharp move the saddle away from the neck. If flat, move the saddle towards the neck.

My old tuner had a needle and I found to be very good to use. One thing I'd like to ask you Rob. What is the longest time that you had strings on any of your guitars ? and does it harm the neck of any other part of the guitar with having strings on for a long time .

I like the feel of fresh strings, so on guitars that I play often, I change the strings often. But I have many guitars I don't touch for YEARS, and the strings just sit on them with no issues, other than aging. Guitars are meant to have strings on them, and so they certainly don't mind them. You can leave a set on for decades, and some will say that will only improve the nature of that instrument!🎸

I think that would work well! Sometimes I use the fretted note, and sometimes I use the harmonic. Sometimes both! As for strobe tuners, I know they're the most accurate, but I still prefer my boss and Korg tuners.

Sure thing! I'd say no matter what you're tuned to, it's always a good idea to check your intonation every once and while, like maybe 2-3 times per year, or certainly whenever you're hearing pitch discrepancies from octaves. For instance, if you pick the 5th fret on your low E (6th) string, you should get the same reading on your tuner when you pluck the 17th fret on the same string, which is a whole octave higher. If they don't register the same on the tuner, then an adjustment to that strings intonation is probably necessary. But I recommend using the open and 12th fret octaves like I demonstrate in the video, when you go to make your adjustments.

Hey Rob, I have 12-60 gauge in drop B tuning and I cant intonate the low B without removing the hardtail saddle springs as the tuner goes sharp on the 12th fret. Should I just cut the springs shorter or leave the saddles without the springs? 😅

Yeah man, that's an issue I've experienced too with lower tunings and heavier gauges. I think cutting/shortening that spring would be an interesting experiment to try!

I just don't understand intonation. If you tune the open string correctly, and then adjust the saddle to tune the fretted string, when you release the fretted string the open chord will have detuned as well. Then you get the opposite issue, in which the fretted string is in tune, but the open chord isn't. What am I doing wrong?

Well yes, each time you move the saddle, you then have to retune the string itself, then check the fretted 12th fret again. Each time you do this, assuming you're doing it correctly, the tuning discrepancy should be less and less, until there's little to no discrepancy at all. I hope that makes sense!

Yo Mark! Just remember that intonation is always the LAST step. Think of it like the finishing touch. Every adjustment you make, in terms of tuning, neck relief, string height, float, etc.., is then finalized by dialing in perfect intonation. Every adjustment you make, will have an affect on your intonation, so therefor it's always the last step.

Thanks man! Happy to hear it. Typically, the 12th fret is where we're trying to get tuning consistency between the open note, and the fretted 12th fret, because it's the mid-way point, or the happy medium. Trying to get perfect tune at the 24th fret is asking a lot, and so you just want to get as close as possible. The name of the game is getting as close to perfect tune across the entire fretboard that you can. So much of the time, it's all about finding the happy medium. 🎸
