In this video, I will show you 3 simple ways to keep your lawn green during a drought.
Step 1: Water your Lawn
Proper watering is crucial for maintaining a healthy lawn during the hot summer months. As a general guideline, lawns typically require around 1 to 2 inches of water per week. However, it's important to consider factors like soil type, grass species, and local climate conditions. To determine the ideal watering schedule, it's recommended to water deeply and infrequently. This encourages the grass roots to grow deeper into the soil, making them more resilient to drought. Watering in the early morning is advisable to minimize water evaporation and prevent lawn fungus. Using tools like sprinkler gauges can help measure how much water your sprinklers are putting at at a given time. By providing the right amount of water, you can ensure that your lawn stays healthy and green throughout the summer season.
Step 2. Apply Baby Shampoo
Baby shampoo can be a surprisingly effective aid in improving water absorption in your lawn. The surfactant properties of baby shampoo, when diluted and applied to the grass, acts as a natural wetting agent. It reduces the surface tension of water, enabling it to spread more evenly and deeply into the soil. This enhanced water penetration helps the roots of the grass access the moisture they need, promoting healthy growth and preventing dry patches. By incorporating baby shampoo into your watering routine, you can ensure that your lawn receives optimal hydration, resulting in a lush green lawn.
Step 3: Light Fertilizer Application
Fertilizing your lawn during the summer can provide the necessary nutrients to support its growth and resilience in the face of heat and stress. However, it's important to approach summer fertilization with CAUTION. Opt for a small amounts of liquid fertilizer to minimize the risk of burning the grass. Aim for a balanced fertilizer with a ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium suited to your grass type as seen in our video. Water the lawn immediately after fertilization or the next morning to ensure the nutrients penetrate the soil and reach the roots effectively. Regularly monitor the condition of your lawn throughout the summer and adjust the fertilization schedule as needed to maintain a healthy and vibrant lawn.

I completely agree with you, George's channel is amazing! I really appreciate his suggestions for cost-effective products. It's always good to know your active ingredients. Also, I wanted to mention that the best time for foliar applications is early morning and late afternoon, when the humidity is higher and the leaves are in a state of full turgor, with their cells full of water and the stomata are open. It's best to avoid spraying during the warmer hours of the day as the absorption at high temperatures is very poor.

If you're looking for a pre-emergent use a prodiamine based pre-emergent, such as Barricade. A good pre/post-emergent is Tenacity. For post-emergents, the best options are Trillion, Par III, and SpeedZone mixed with Urea and Citric Acid. The Citric Acid serves as a surfactant, and it also lowers the pH of the carrier (water), which enhances the effectiveness and efficiency of your herbicides.

Great video as always. You turned me on to Blue DEF last season and I’ve been very impressed with the results. I usually spray when it’s raining outside so the urea doesn’t dry up before I can get the sprinklers running. But so far so good and you can’t beat the price either.

Baby shampoo can be expensive, but the cheapest dollar store stuff works great. (Actually, anything with Sodium Laureth Sulfate ... the key ingredient for a wetting agent ... will work). I just use dollar store bubble bath ... a big bottle for $1.25. I use the Jerry Baker lawn tonic formulas, but I use fresh human pee instead of ammonia and I have one of the greenest lawns on my block. I don't take drugs or use meds and I drink only distilled water, so it's all quite safe. Urine contains urea, phosphorous and potassium, so it's all valuable. Also, in hot climates (I'm in Texas) mow your grass on the highest setting. I mow my St Augustine at 4" and it's lush and thick.

About around midnight we load her into her Zinger wheelchair and leave her motor around the lawn. Our lawn is super blue green and everyone wants to know my secret. Already on lawn care nut app to schedule when I apply fert etc. Thanks for easy Scott’s app to regulate amount of rainfall plus how to monitor my irrigation system. I use baby shampoo as my surfactant but didn’t think about it as a substitute for hydretain. The amount of baby shampoo to cover my 15k yard probably cheaper to keep using hydretain only in a few trouble areas near trees that suck up water.

New sub here. I’m north of Chicago in Lake Forest, been keeping up with irrigation. Most my neighbors lawns are brown. I’m on the feature/urea/pgr program with plenty of irrigation. I use sea kelp, green envy and yucca wet in the back yard tho cuz my daughter and dog play out back.
