It is hard to say or even see how much water actually got through any tiny gaps or the one small place that was not covered by the tape. That said, seeing that little spot that you left uncovered by the tape, I expected to see you set-up an IV type watering rig by inserting a tube into the cup in that spot that was attached at a plastic bottle funnel that was taped to the limb above the air layering site. Water could be poured into the funnel, down the tube then into the cup.

You should cut the branch from mother plant after 1.5 months and plant in a beg or pot and keep it shady place. Don't give over water.
