No, Air layering: This is a propagation technique where roots are grown on a branch while it's still attached to the parent tree. Once roots develop, the branch is severed and planted as a new tree. Air layering itself shouldn't affect the lifespan of the new tree. Lifespan of lychee: Lychee trees are generally considered long-lived, potentially lasting for decades with proper care.

It is hard to say or even see how much water actually got through any tiny gaps or the one small place that was not covered by the tape. That said, seeing that little spot that you left uncovered by the tape, I expected to see you set-up an IV type watering rig by inserting a tube into the cup in that spot that was attached at a plastic bottle funnel that was taped to the limb above the air layering site. Water could be poured into the funnel, down the tube then into the cup.
