In this video, I go over how to airbrush Vallejo Model Color paints and what thinning ratio I use to get the best results.

Super big thanks. New to airbrushing and Vallejo was just making things harder than they needed to be. (you would think they would have a clear guide on their website, considering how popular they are)

Andrew, glad I could help. Welcome to airbrushing! Just want to make sure you understand that Vallejo Model Air and Vallejo Model Color (model color is shown in this video) are different. Model air is formulated for airbrushing out of the bottle…though you still need to thin for best results. I have a video on Model air on my channel. Model color is formulated for brush painting…however sometimes you might want to airbrush it, thus why I made this video. This difference is important because each type of paint has different thinning ratios.

@@arewethereyetmodeling2196 I appreciate the reply. Yeah, I know they are different and watched your other video on seeing it in comments on this one. Sounds like I want a 4:1 or 3:1 ratio for Vallejo "Game Color" range to spray well. The snot/gelling coming out of the droppers is an issue (even for brush painting). I think I can sort that by adding a little moisture to the bottles and I'm going to try making a foam insert to use a rock tumble to slowly turn them to see if the combo gets rid of that issue.

I tend to go 3 to 1 thinner/paint and add a drop or two of retarder as Vallejo has a habit of drying on the way to the surface. It sprays very nicely at 20 psi out of a H & S Evolution and it's easy to clean up. The only thing I would disagree with is mixing in the colour cup. I always get badly mixed paint using this method so I mix externally.

3 to 1 is the perfect mix

Thank you for sharing and the content. When Brush Painting, is there a reason why you do not mix the Paint and Thinner together? versus dipping the brush into the thinner and then the paint? Your thoughts are welcomed.

Hey thank for the kind words and I am glad you liked the video. Regarding your question, when I brush paint I never mix my paint and thinner altogether because I want to control the paint fluidity. It is better to dip the paint and thinner in small amounts. If you check out fantasy/figure modeler videos, they do the same thing. The one exception is I when I am "glazing". I will mix the paint with thinner or water to blend in different colors. For example, when painting a black cockpit and drying. Some times there are areas where the dry-brushing is to heavy. You don't want to come back in with heavy paint or it will look off. So it is better to glaze the area and make it look more natural....I will mix the paint with thinner or water. and I hope this helps!

Hi Francis, I make my own thinning formula for airbrushing Vallejo paints. I have a video on how to make the thinning formula, here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYrcl36GpNp5ebM

I have an Iwata HP/CS and it’s very temper-mental. You need to fully clean the brush after each application or the brush clogs.

I use a 60/40 paint to thinner. Not too thin, not to thick for 0.3 needle @ 15-20 psi.

I get my best results mixing with thinner and flow improver according to the instructions on the bottle.
@arewethereyetmodeling21969 ай бұрын
Try adding in the retarder. I promise it will be a game changer. I worked with several of airbrush artist friends to come with the formula and the retarder really changes the experience you will have.

@@arewethereyetmodeling2196 Next time I will. Just finished painting a project that had been very frustrating with Model Color. Using just the thinner and flow improver gave me a paint job I am very happy with.

The Krome likes low psi. I start mine at 15psi at the guage and drop it further with a grex mac valve. 20psi is a lot of pressure for that gun.... considering how thin your paint is to begin with...
