Contrast Paints basically act like filters when used thru an airbrush due to their thin translucent nature although this might be different with the new flat contrast colors like Baal Red, Bad Moon Yellow, etc... Either way, with the translucent contrasts, they act like Pro Acryl Transparent Paints which perform similar. The recipe for Transparent Paints is 50/50 Paint/Flow Improver. Also Flow Improver helps prevent tip dry. Also, never stop pushing down for air. This prevents tip dry as well. Pull back to spray, a lot of painters rock the trigger when base coating, but never stop pushing down for air. Once you lift your finger off the trigger air stops flowing and dry tip starts to form.

whilst i agree somewhat with the sentiment in some of these comments behind the use of contrast pain through an airbrush, it's basically a filter not really what contrast was designed to do, and acheivable with regular paints, the real thing to rememeber is, it's your hobby, and you can hobby how you want to, if it brings you happiness, then more power to you! im sure with time and experience with the airbrush you'll find loads of ways to use it as a tool in your arsenal. ignore the naysayers, keep doing what brings you joy! i think the main takeaway for people from this, was the use of colours to define your shadow, the more people think about things like this, the better, the monochromatic black and white zenithal has always irrationally annoyed me, because i know you can do so much more with colour.

also, i can reccomend if you want a really vibrant pink, transparent red from monument hobbies, over white is amazing

Exactly, there are no rules, we can use paints and tools however we like to paint our plastic soldiers. It would be a boring world if everyone did the same thing 🤣 Imagine if we only used ink in a pen or oils on a canvas?

> it's your hobby, and you can hobby how you want to You can, but getting out of the GW/vallejo/etc box makes sense. Is cheaper in the long term, often performs better because single pigment (funny that it has only become a thing in mini land recently and only this year from GW) and.. well is just better really. These brands want your money and their paint lines reflect that.

Not sure I’ll ever have an airbrush, but it would be great for vehicles. Also, much, much nicer, smooth base coat than with the spray can. Well, one can dream 😀.

I use to think getting started with an Airbrush was a very expensive option & I agree it can be, if you're looking for high quality equipment. But it doesn't need to be... look on eBay buddy you should be able to find a cheap airbrush & compressor combo for around the £60-80 mark, This is a perfect beginner option to try out & see if you like it without breaking the bank.

The cheap Chinese setups on Amazon are perfectly fine for that. There’s a lot to learn with cleaning and thinning paints but in the long run it’s so worth it

They are so good for vehicles. I'm really lucky to have this one but as Dargo and Nick have said, there are loads of other options that work great. I think if you paint a lot of terrain and models, and use a lot of spray cans, you can make your money back quite fast.

I found the demonstration incredibly helpful. Thank you! There are many professional painters that use contrast paints like inks, kind of like you did. There is one difference though: usually contrast paints are sprayed unthinned, at least from what I have seen. May I ask why you chose to thin the Imperial Fists Yellow so heavily? I mean 20 drops of flow improver with 20 drops of airbrush thinner is crazy thin. If you are not applying in super thin coats, the liquid will run into the recesses and pool. Is it because you have a tiny nozzle? (0.15mm?)

It’s a shame the shading and hi lightings don’t come through the air brush, is their a reason to use contrast/speed paint over just normal airbrush paint?

That's a good point, there's not much room for error. I think you'd have to thin some Contrast with medium and build up until it matched.

@@tabletopskirmishgames would you say it's good for beginners? I'm a digital artist but new to Airbrushing, i have a very cheap one but that's just not precise enough at all and i want to upgrade. I'm having a hard time deciding between a H&S Infi and an Iwata HPCS or Takumi. Thinking that the Iwata will probably clog not as easily due to it's wider nozzle, some people sasy the Trigger on the H&S can be a bit laggy/spongy, but the H&S replacement parts are SO much cheaper haha
@splatterling45392 жыл бұрын
@@tabletopskirmishgames Oh, sorry :D Thank you so much for the recipe and the tip with the Mecha Primer, that was exactly what i was looking for haha
@tabletopskirmishgames2 жыл бұрын
@Splatterling I used to have a cheap airbrush that I used twice to airbrush a wedding cake years ago but other than that I am a complete beginner and this H&S is my first airbrush. A friend of mine gave me an incredible offer (pretty much gifted it to me) so I'm lucky to have it. When I try new hobbies/skills, I always think it's good to get the best version of a tool you can afford, and try to find something you can sell on for a good price if you don't continue in that hobby/skill. Once you get the right amount of thinner and flow improver for the paint you are using, the airbrush shouldn't clog. I found a great tip about keeping the air flowing in between bursts of paint. That helps to prevent clogging too. With the primers, I follow the directions on the bottles and with Vallejo, the thinners and flow improvers give you good info. So I would say that it's the recipe that has a lot more to do with potential clogging. I'd recommend watching some videos about airbrushing by artists on canvas or other mediums as well as miniature painting. You can find some great tips and info from a different perspective that you can then apply to your mini art. Have fun!

Why use yellow Contrast instead of using a thinned paint? The results would be relatively similar. Great video though, some really excellent shots of your minis

@@tabletopskirmishgames the contrast paint through the airbrush is very pigmented. Super pop colour over the pink really gives a nice gradient. Maybe try this Vs something like Liquitex yellow ink. See if there is a difference?
