I loved this video. I am on a quest to make all my jewellery alloys and have been apprehensive about alloying my own white gold from pure gold, pure palladium and pure silver. This video has been a MASSIVE help. Thank you.

Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning that 24 out of 24 parts of the metal are gold. Although the terms sound familiar, the karat (k) system used to measure the purity of gold is different from the carat (c) unit of mass that’s used to weigh diamonds.

Thanks for the video and the math breakdown! Now I wonder if the higher percentage of palladium is used the whiter the gold?
@joshharris30402 жыл бұрын
The color of a gold alloy can be quite complex and depends on many factors. Karat is one factor, but the most important factor by far is the alloying metals used and their relative proportions to each other and to the gold. The simple answer to your question is yes, in almost all cases, the higher the percentage of palladium used, the whiter the resulting gold alloy will be. That's a good rule of thumb, but there are exceptions, some of which are quite fascinating. For example, regarding the 9kt alloy made in this video, if you were to replace a specific proportion of the silver used with indium, you would not end up with white gold at all. This is true even (especially) if you also increased the percentage of palladium in the alloy. Instead you would have a yellow gold alloy with a color similar to 14kt yellow gold. This alloy would be even richer in color than a higher karat alloy of gold and silver that doesn't use any palladium whatsoever. Even more interesting is the fact that the gold itself has very little to do with the color of this particular alloy. In fact, the gold isn't necessary at all for the yellow color! It is entirely possible to make a lovely yellow "gold" alloy containing only silver, indium, and palladium (all of which are white metals) as long as you get the proportions of each metal correct. This happens because palladium and indium react with each other when near a 1:1 atomic ratio to create an intermetallic compound (PdIn) that has a red color. The addition of silver changes the color to yellow while also making the alloy more durable, as PdIn is very brittle in its pure form. Adding gold to this alloy improves tarnish resistance and durability while maintaining the yellow color, but only to a point. If you keep adding gold beyond approximately the 10kt level (41.7% gold by weight), this will then start bleaching the alloy back towards white. The same thing happens with copper. Adding a little doesn't hurt the color, and can even shift it closer to a rose gold, but adding too much will bleach the color away just like too much gold will.

If you miss out the Palladium, using only Gold and Silver. what will the Gold be called without Palladium?
@JanHendrikViljoen2 жыл бұрын
If you do not add Palladium you end up making green gold if you only add silver. Especially in the case of 18ct gold. Wit 14ct the colour may be a very light shade of yellow.
